Bill Clinton in 2005: "commended the Nation of Islam leader"

In a May 2005 interview with the black weekly newspaper the New York Amsterdam News, the former president said that he supported the efforts of Louis Farrakhan and the Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to organize a Million More March in the nation's capital that fall.

During his presidency Clinton made a distinction between Farrakhan and the marchers, but Clinton the New Yorker commended the Nation of Islam leader and the two black preachers for coming together to focus the country's attention on problems confronting African Americans.

<snip>

Clinton said: "I like the idea of a march, but I think it would also be good at the march for them to say, 'We want to call your attention to this problem, and here's something else you can do. And that it's fine to be concerned about security, but we also have to keep trying to make America strong and better here at home."

Post-White House Clinton found no fault with Farrakhan's leadership. There was no mention of Farrakhan's "malice and division" during the interview.

8. 1997 : Furor in City of Brotherly Love over mayor's bid to Farrakhan

The city's Jewish community is boiling over Mayor Edward G. Rendell's inviting Louis Farrakhan to a rally, and then charging critical Jews with not caring about combating bigotry.

The Jewish mayor's criticism of Jews capped a bizarre week in which the mayor of the fifth largest city in America invited the Nation of Islam leader to speak at an "ecumenical" service called to heal racial and ethnic divisiveness in the city's Grays Ferry neighborhood.

Jewish and Roman Catholic leaders avoided the Monday event at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church, in response to Farrakhan's long and well-documented history of anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic rhetoric.

<snip>

Rendell's handling of the Farrakhan affair has rippled beyond Philadelphia. In New York, Mordechai Levy, national director of the militant Jewish Defense Organization, said in a phone interview that more than 300 Jews attended a meeting in New York to condemn Rendell. Levy called for a march on Rendell's home to lambaste the mayor.

5. Maybe it's time for Obama to say, "I'm rubber and you're glue.
Everything you say bounces off of me and sticks to you." :P

11. Unfortunately, in this case Barack Obama, because he is black, is held
to a different standard from Clinton or Rendell. We have to face that truth. I don't recall any Democrat tarred and feathered for saying something nice about Farrakhan in the past ... until Obama. And he is not even on record saying anything nice, just a guilt by association with his Church and attending an event with millions of others.
