"No way in HELL I'm voting for a black Muslim."
That's the reply I got from my brother, when I asked him if he was voting.

Our phone call started with the typical brother/sister banter....how's your job; how are the kids; whatcha got planned for the weekend, etc. Then I asked him if he planned on voting, since he's never bothered to register before. He told me he registered in January and that he was, in fact, putting in his vote.

So I said "So....can I ask you which one you decided to go with?"

Answer: "Well, if you ask me, there's only one TO vote for."

Having no idea where he was going with this conversation, I said "Oh yeah, who?"

He says "Are you kidding? You don't know? I'm voting for Hillary. Bill did a good job - and besides, there's no way in HELL I'm voting for a black Muslim."

I tried to correct his massive amount of misinformation, but he had already tuned me out. When I finally YELLED his name, and asked him where he got that information, he said "Michelle, you're so naive. Yeah, I don't watch that much TV, but neither do you, and you could probably stand to watch a little more." So I said "Really? And where have you been gleaning this eye-opening information?" And his horrifying answer was "I don't have time to watch the news, but mom and dad told me enough to know who I'm NOT voting for."

I'm so bitterly disgusted right now. I'm going to go for a walk with my son and look for some critters. Just needed to vent.

1. People claim Obama would be able to respond to swiftboating
Yet 10-15% of people still think he is a (radical) Muslim over a year after this BS began. Where is his great response?

6. A response to that?
Do you really think you can reason with unreasonable people?

Those aren't votes that can be won over. They're not voting on issues.

15. He has done it subtly in the past but has to do it consistently
With references in things like ads to "my Christian faith, which taught me we need to... X". He won't get all of those people but he needs to get the number down.

As an aside, he doesn't do as bad with those who think he is as Muslim as we expect. He does "only" 16 points worse than Clinton among them. They are mostly rethugs and they both lose that bloc. Clinton gets 42%, Obama 35% but Obama has a lot more firm McSame voters among that bloc and hence the 16 point gap.

12. Why is another Democrat (Hillary) giving them the impression that he is, and that he

is unpatriotic and tied to terrorists?

Don't you think people are going to believe it more coming from someone in his own party, a colleague, than from a Republican?

25. When? The ad? The ad also has images of the USSR, the Cuban missile crisis, WW2, and gas lines
Does that mean she is implying he is a Soviet plant? Crises happen. The question is who do you trust to be up to the job? That is a perfectly legitimate question. The furor over this shows how weak Obama is. His polling must show that few people trust him on security so he is terrified about this issue coming up. Well guess what, Barack? This will come up in the GE and you can't hide from it.

26. No... not the ad. Ayers.
It's not that he's terrified. It's that it's on the same level as going after her about Vince Foster's murder.

It's scurrilous and has no place in politics. That crap should be the fare of Rush and his ilk... not debates and Dem candidates.

"As far as we know", she hasn't done that. Hillary has not been helpful,
but this is bigger than her. We need a united party to fight the lies, which means this primary needs to end soon.

30. 15 % of the populace are racist one GOP consultant said.
8% according to a recent poll, and that's where they admitted it. 15% is not enough to mean Obama cannot win.

39. If true that means Obama needs a Reagan-style landslide with the remaining 85%
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 06:33 PM by jackson_dem
I agree that roughly 15% are racist but I hope--and don't believe--that 15% would vote based on race. Some of them will bite the bullet and vote for Obama on the issues over McSame. I would say the number of people who will vote against O solely on race is in the single digits. If it is higher than that we are fucked if he is the nominee. He would need 59% of that remaining group, which is what Reagan got when he won 49 states. The last Democrat to get that much support was LBJ when he received 61%.

after all the millions Obama has spent to correct it? Are they deaf and blind to the media and MSM? How's he going to defeat the RW Rove machine if he can't even convince 100% of the population that he is indeed a Christian? He needs another big speech in front of a row of flags. That ought to do it!

40. Wellllll....make that 98% to be more exact.
If anyone believes that...they should not be allowed to vote as they are too stupid to comprehend to ballot. Sometimes I wish people had to pass an easy test to show they know a minimum of information about the election. I guess I'll have to take that back too in a couple minutes. I already know that's not democratic. But.............

31. Has the latest version of this actually been debunked?
The original version was so over the top that it was easy to debunk and easy for us to dismiss. The current version has a lot more detail and AFAIK has not been debunked.

The current version focuses on when Obama attended public school in Indonesia and claims he was registered as a Muslim and received religious training as a Muslim at the school, that he sometimes went with his stepfather to prayers, and sites articles in various articles to back up these claims. Since he has categorically denied ever being a Muslim, then if there is anything that supports these claims, then we have a problem. Does anyone know of this version being debunked?

BTW I had just posted about seeing a lot of this type stuff here in NC recently coming from the RW.

35. Obama has told us time again it was not going to be easy.
Let us face it. There is going to be a number of Americans who can't stand the thought of a Black man becoming president of the United States. And they are going to fight tooth and nail to keep that from happening.

The Muslim part is just bullshit that mostly died after pastorgate. Only the idiots use that now.

However because he is black the "Good ole boy" system is going to make itself apparent this year. We have already heard about Church houses being used to spread Operation Chaos.

And before you say "HA that is why Obama can't be elected!" Well the fact is there is just as much that can't stand the thought of a woman being president. They BOTH have the problem with discrimination.

This is why the Internet is so important. Assholes who lie can be caught on media and exposed in accordance of law. When you see people forming networks to try to spread BS and discriminatory crap about the democratic nominee you interrupt the network with debunks and reporting it to the net. It makes it harder for them to get support by people with a name to hold that way.

As for your parents. I urge you to spend as much time as possible on the phone with them debunking their crap and if they dont want to listen you just give them positive stuff over and over again. You have to be the one to break the cycle of racism.
