Race and the polls.
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 06:03 PM by hiaasenrocks
If the exit polls are correct (and they look similar to previous polling data) what does this say about race in America?

Whites
Clinton 60%
Obama 40%

Blacks
Clinton 8%
Obama 92%

EDIT: MSNBC (tv) just had polling data that closely resembled these numbers, off by less than roughly 5% on each count.

66. Why do you assume it's "racial preference voting"
Just because a majority of black voters this time around are voting for the black candidate against the white candidate?

In 2004, 80% of black voters voted for white candidates in the primary, even though two black candidates were in the race. On the other hand, 99% of white voters voted for white candidates, against the black candidates. Was that proof of "racial preference voting" by white voters?

It is crazy to just look at one election cycle and assume that the fact that a demographic votes a certain way is proof of any kind of racial preference. Black voters have for years voted for white candidates in large numbers, even when black candidates are running. If black voters were engaging in "racial preference voting," this would have been evident in past races. But it's not. Which means that it's very likely that the fact that black voters this time around are voting in large numbers has to do with something other than race, since if race were the determining factor, it would affect other elections as well.

This argument reminds me of the "why do all of the black kids sit together in the cafeteria" question that often comes up when someone notices ten black kids sitting at one table. They fail to notice that the white kids are also all sitting together - for some reason, the sea of white people who are all clumped together doesn't appear to be a "group" since they are in the majority while the small group of blacks is more obvious because they stand out.

White voters have been voting in blocs for white candidates against black candidates for years, but no one seemed to care - they just assumed that the white voters were voting the issues and that they believed the white candidates were more qualified. And black voters have also been voting in large numbers for white candidates against black candidates for years, and no one seemed to care - it was just assumed again that black voters were voting for the white candidates because they thought the white candidates were more qualified.

Yet, all of a sudden, when black voters do what white voters have always done - voted in overwhelming numbers for a candidate of their race (although the numbers are not as overwhelming as the percentages in which whites tended to support white candidates) - folks seem to have trouble believing that this could be because they actually think the black candidate is more qualified. Something must be wrong - why else would they all vote for the black guy if it weren't because he was black?

So the fact that 92% of one racial voting bloc voted for their own race, while only 60% of the other voted along their racial lines, it shows that the latter group is stupid.

Un-fucking-believable, the lengths to which some will go to excuse obvious racial preferences. Pathetic.

I imagine you'll respond by carrying on with some other nonsense, so go ahead. But while you're at it, can you link some polling data that shows how blacks and whites stood during the run-up to the war (as you suggested)?

"BLACK FOLKS do not want to invade Iraq. The question for Americans is whether to view this as unpatriotic or as a tweet of sanity that warns us we are about to walk into a horrific explosion. According to a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, 44 percent of African-Americans support the use of military force in Iraq. That compares with 73 percent of white Americans. Other polls show black support to be far less..."

37. 92-8 is a split not unheard of in the black community in favor of Dems over republicans.
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 06:32 PM by JVS
Black people vote overwhelmingly for democrats in every election, it's just that this time they knew which democrat they wanted from (not long after) the beginning. Furthermore, Clinton had to expect low levels of support after dismissing electoral defeats on the grounds that it was black voters who didn't support her. Blowing them off like that was not a good move.

Obama has proven his ability to reach white voters as well with his smashing victories in the upper midwest.

45. I disagree. I think that the polarization is because Clinton ran a conservative campaign...
in which rather than try to reach out to demographics outside of her strong area, she just beat the drum to rally them.

Obama has made consistent efforts to appeal to all demographics and tried like hell NOT to be pegged as the "Black Candidate" for the simple reason that Black voters are not numerous enough to carry an election.

Hillary's strong suits (Whites and Women) are both majorities in electoral terms and thus she catered to them and ignored the concerns of other groups. She has no right to expect any black support after doing this.

67. Black voters have almost always voted for white candidates over black candidates in the past
They didn't get transfixed by Sharpton's or Moseley-Braun's or Wilder's race that they followed them blindly in lockstep. So why do you assume that the fact that they're voting for Obama in large numbers this time is because they all of a sudden got struck color-conscious?

Hey, maybe this time around, a substantial majority of black voters believe that Barack Obama would make a better president than Hillary Clinton - for reasons other than his race - just as a substantial majority of black voters thought that John Kerry and John Edwards and Howard Dean would make a better president than Al Sharpton in 2004.

Black people aren't stupid. We're just as capable as white people of discerning who best will carry out our interests and voting accordingly. It's rather insulting to see people assume that the same black voters who have voted for white candidates for decades are voting for a black candidate solely based on his race.

offensive to them. Bill's comment was a large part of it, also Ferraro and Hillary's reluctance to denounce her comment about Obama being an Affirmative Action candidate.

I am white and believe blacks tend to have a better handle on knowing who is being respectful towards them and who is not. And I think the polls are a very clear indication of how their campaigns have been handled in regards to race issues.

And also Obama's speech on race and how he respectfully dealt with right impressed AA voters. There was definitely racism going on during the whole Wright debacle, Obama's church and Wright were truly being crucified unlike any white person has been in a very long time.
