The unspoken truth is (racism)
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 08:25 PM by elf
sorry about this, but that's what I feel............

(and that's what I feel as a German Green Card holder which loves this country very much) is:

There is a lot of racism and NOBODY especially the media IS ABLE TO TALK ABOUT IT!!!!!

When I talk to my American neighbors, it's always very hard to talk about politics and opinions and almost impossible to stay on a one on one point by point exchange of opinions.

They always react like somebody wants to attack them.

Bottom line, in this country there is no "healthy" discussion and EXCHANGE OF OPINIONS possible.

What a pity!!!

edited to make the point better

1. True.
There's a reason the black-white vote is going the way it is vis-a-vis Obama and Clinton. But we call it "demographics."

2. 90% of the black vote for Obama?
Why, yes, I suppose that is racism.

And I hope you do go to Harlem and the Carolinas and talk to them about it.

7. 28% of the white vote would vote for *. What's your point? Hill should
have won this state by massive amounts. I hope you go somewhere and address your problem with Obama, or let me know now. Are you up for a second post?

22. I AM AND ALWAYS WAS FOR OBAMA
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 09:01 PM by elf
my husband and me , EACH of us donated already the MAX. $2,600 EACH of us.
What else can we do, our lawful limit is full-----even thought we, as Green Card holders can't vote.

We just love this country and want and will be involved (not to speak about a very heavy amount of taxes we pay, we belong to the often mentioned 1%, does it ring a bell?)

We don't care, if after Obama is president, that we have to pay more taxes!!!

We will not have to live in a country who is not sure about torture and war and aggressive foreign policy anymore.

After Obama is inaugurated, the world will start to respect the USA again, and they will invest again, and the Americans can slowly start again to shout: I'm proud to be an American (didn't hear this in a while)

edited "ware" to "war" I'm not writing in my mother language

Just like White people don't find white presidents special after 219 years. I urge you to rethink your statement.

32. What is it when most whites vote for the white candidate?
I guess that is okay with you. I keep forgetting as a black person that whites define how my vote is to be interpreted. That's why I love this abomination of a country (tongue FIRMLY in cheek).

29. Somebody has to vote for him.
If we didn't it would be a landslide. That's why I love the youth of this country. The day is coming where black won't be an evil thing because the young people of this country are a kinder and more tolerant bunch. God bless the young people.

the suburbs of Atlanta, I know a lot about that.

Moved to South FL, then for 1 year to Seattle, WA (contrast program :-)), coming back to feel home in South FL.

Always ( since 12 years by now) reading books about politics and society in the US, to feel home and understand my chosen country better.

5. It's true. Many old white people are voting against a black guy. That's it.
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 08:29 PM by TexasObserver
White people over 60 tend to be the most racist in our culture toward blacks, and the most likely to send around emails full of bile aimed at Obama. He's black and they cannot handle it.

6. You called that one right, there are still racial issues in this nation
it is just hidden deep down inside .... I have a friend to whom I am her only white friend and I never think about the color of her skin until someone mentions it to me. It is weird that for some reason other white people feel that they need to point this out to me.

Racism is alive and well in this nation but I was hoping we had grown enought to realize it and deal with it in a better way. It is looking like we have a little but we still go back two steps for every one step forward. We need Obama in the White House to end this type of belief system as well as to end the Iraq war, to end corporation ownership of our nation, to give us meaningful Health Care and so many other good deeds that only Obama will give us with the change only he seems to realize we need.

8. They always react like somebody wants to attack them.
They have seen staunch democrats that have fought for civil rights tagged as racists in this election

you bet they will react that way and not talk to anyone about it that they are not very close to.

It has been turned into a friggin joke and has been a set back to any serious discussion of race

10. Racism still wields an ugly influence
Fear of integration in hospitals was the reason why Americans didn't have universal health care under Truman- and it's part of the reason why people in places like Ohio have continued to vote Republican, despite the fact that right wing trade and economic policies have devastated their communities.

That's not to say a black person couldn't be elected. Colin Powell, for example would probably have run away with the election in 2000, before he was tainted. Whether people will get over their fears and consider Obama's policy positions given his inexperience remains to be seen.

One would like to think so at this stage of the game.

30. They would not have voted for Colin Powell
trust me they would have dug his mother up from the grave to find something on him. It doesn't take much. They say they like him because he isn't running but once he would become viable they would find a way to tear him down. Just check out the comments on CNN, the racists love it. They say he's only for Africa or white people you'd better be scared of the scary black man. All the television pundits say "the cultural voter won't vote for Obama" code word racist.

31. "they would have dug his mother up from the grave to find something"
I think that's one reason why Alma didn't want him to run.

I don't have much to base my opinion on other than anecdotal things from the South, yet what I heard from people were (admittedly disgusting) comments like: He's acceptable.

Best you can hear from folks like that, who've cut off their noses to spite their faces rather than have an honest look over a couple of beers about policies.

12. Demographics divides people by race, sex, economic class, etc
Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 08:36 PM by bhikkhu
So when you look at poll results divided by these you might think - "Good lord, what a bunch of racially divided sexist and economically divided people!"

But most people, if we look at our own primaries, are neither racist or sexist. Focusing on the minority of ideological throwbacks is not how I would spend my time.

And keep your unspoken truth out of my neighborhood - it isn't welcome here.

14. Thank you for starting this.
I left the TV to come in and start a conversation about this. I am so sick of the veiled excuses used to hide out and out racism. It's a pity for sure. I'm a 60 year old white woman in California and I support Obama with all my strength. If not an African American President now then when? The media should be ashamed.

I'm by the way 56 years old and think, that our age group has a lot of life-experience to give it to the next generation, that they don't do the same old mistakes we grew up with!

My parents(we are Germans) lived through the 3rd Reich and taught my bother and me to be always aware, that fascism never ever happens again....be always aware, what you are voting for!!!

Again hug to you progdog:pals:

in many ways (not only racially) for a long long time. And now the Bushco nightmare --with all the lying and corruption --nobody knows what to believe anymore, and it's not surprising some people would be defensive around someone from another country. These are dark times for America.

27. I wonder why
the ideals of America inspires you, but those ideals seem false and somewhat outdated to me?

Maybe because when people are fed a steady diet of how 'great' this country is, while at the same time witnessing the abuses, corruption and manipulation apparent in every facet of public service (never more blatant than during the Bush regime)--it's a little hard to be so optimistic.

17. There's no question that EU countries discuss discuss politics FAR more healthily than us.
From British pubs to French cafes to German rathskellers, folks are more informed and eager to discuss politics than Americans discuss the latest reality show. On my several trips to Europe, lasting as long as three months, I absolutely WALLOWED in the energy of the discourse. There's nothing like it in the US ... even in the SF Bay Area which is the best I've found.

The Pennsylvania "T" is filled with "white fright" ... bigotry. It's tragic, but true. That's NOT to say that they vote for ANY Democrat (the GOP has the overwhelming majority of the bigot vote) ... but those who DO vote Democratic are influenced by that social context for sure.

33. Sexism plays a role...
but check out the election results during the Democratic primaries. 58-60% of the voters are female. I think Hillary would see quite a bit more sexism in the general election (likewise for Obama with racism) once the conservative males get thrown into the mix. But a vast majority of the voters in the Dem primaries are also white just like in a general election, whereas 58-60% of the general election is not made up of women (it's a lot closer). There are certainly men that are voting against Clinton because they don't "trust a woman." But like I said, I think the Dem primaries tend to help her fight some of it.

25. you are soooooo correct
I married into a French family and had the most wonderful conversations about deep, deep issues. Anyone with whom I converse about issues is almost certainly a foreign born person. Why Americans (white Americans) cannot be as introspective as it simply look at their own actions and standards is puzzling. Sadly, nothing will change until that occurs, which will be never.
