My house is like a morgue tonight...
My graduate student daughter came home to watch the returns
with us, and she is utterly devastated.

she was part of the ground game for Obama in West Philly,
she worked her butt off in the community, they were always on the phone,
and that team was tough on the volunteers.

She feels betrayed, not by the campaign, but by white people.
By comments she's heard and attitudes....our country still has so far
to go in how we live, and how we see ourselves...
(And we are white! She's very idealistic, and like many young people,
see beyond race and ethnicity, but she's getting an education about life,
that is painful for all).

But let's be honest: the undertone of this campaign, in the advertising and in comments
at the debates were underhanded, sly and divisive. Please don't take this as a critique
of the opposition campaign...just an observation. And the media! Let's not go there.

I'm trying very hard to remain objective, but my heart hurts for her
and for all the young people enthralled with the possibility of politics.

I wonder how this will effect all the young people who threw their hearts
into this new possibility?

118. Dear Small.... thanks for your 'understanding' comment...
It isn't so -called 'white guilt' that motivates my daughter,
nor thousands of other idealistic students, its the hope that
our nation can look beyond race, and do something better
than name calling and categorizing.

"White guilt"? Quite unfair. YOu don't know our family,
and you dont' know where we've lived or how we've lived.

Your comment is a blanket indictment of all those who want
our culture to get beyond such comments.

Why did she feel betrayed?
She knocked on thousands of doors,
in mostly African American neighborhoods
(IN West Philly, where she lives by the way)
and felt accepted and affirmed, and part of the community and the future.

When she came home to Bucks County to vote in her home
town, her choice to do what she did brought derision and
scorn from our neighbors... People who should know better,
people who are considered part of Obama's base: educated,
successful white people. Something's wrong in this equation.

How can so called 'progressives' advance our cause if we too easily
label and bait one another? If that's what we fall into, we're no better
than the repubicans.

and she WILL get over it.

Politics SUCKS sometimes.
(Most of the time).

Let her know that her efforts were NOT
in vain. Hillary was touted to win by
over 20% before those volunteers got in
their and shared their stories.

At the very LEAST, we have shown our
disgust with the powers that be within
the democratic party, and that will put
pressure on them.

At BEST, we will have a president who is
beholden only to the PEOPLE.

Underneath it all, I vote by these words...

"I'd rather vote for something I want and not get it than vote for something I don't want and get it." E. V. Debs

163. Please stop. Only losers whine and make excuses! Obama supporters are better than that!...
...Pull yourself together, put your shoes back on, and hit the streets for Obama.

Political races don't always go as smoothly as we wish they would, but I know Obama is worth fighting for, and making excuses for PA is dragging the movement down.

We need to move forward and look to NC.

We, as Obama supporters, are so fortunate to be part of this movement. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we are not only lucky to have Obama as a candidate, we are lucky to have each other as his supporters.

Obama doesn't look back, whine and make excuses, and neither should we.

So let's get it together and get boots on the ground for the next primary.

46. I dunno.
13% percent of all voters were White voters who said race mattered to them. Of those 75% went for Hillary. Seems like that might make a difference.

Actually, doing the math, adding all the votes for each candidate(from the state website) there are 2.1 million votes cast(at 92% reporting)

So 13% of those voters say race matters. That would be about 275k voters.

Of those 75% went for Clinton. That would be 205k voters.

Hillary is winning by 200k voters.

I guess race(racism) did make a bit of difference.

107. ok
Well, Of all voters, 19% said the race of the candidate was important to them.

Given the current count is 2.3 million votes total, that means: 432K voters said that race was important to them in this race, among all voters black and white.

Of those 59% voted for Hillary. That would be 255k votes

Of those 41% voted for Obama. That would be 177k Votes

So amongst all those for whom race was important in their vote, Hillary gained a net 78K votes. That is 40% of her victory right there. If you subtracted all of the Racialy motivated voters from both sides, Hilllary would still win, 53/47.

Just to stir it up a little, if you took away those for whom Gender was an important factor in choosing their vote, she would loose another significant portion. I dont feel like Mathing that right this second, but she might well have lost. So Both Race and Gender worked in Hillary's favor in Pennsylvania.

if you make racial slurs, 'anti-muslim' slurs,
and strings of verbal abuse that make your hair curl...

I guess you're not voting for Obama.

Vote for Hillary fine, no racial comments.

But... in the year 2008, for people who have been
nurtured in our 'democracy,' for people who have access
to incredible goods and services, for people who are aware
of the ethnic mix of our culture (even if its just from television)
this is demoralized.

This election could have been an opportunity to lift people up
to a greater understanding of one another.

We have failed.

Obama worked? This is the only way she was able to get votes from a certain segment of America and it's disgusting. You can allow this and call someone 'condescending' as though (if she was) this is worse than the racial hate in the post you've responded to. It's DISGUSTING that you will accept this from Hillary Clinton's campaign just so she can get votes. That's all she's got, hate, lies, smears, and now fear. This is the first time I'm writing this anywhere and I hate that her actions have led to this, but she is working just like the Republican party.

Hopefully they will have learned that if you believe in something, you fight and work and do what you can, and that even so, you don't always win or get your way. But that you don't give up, you go back and give it another shot, because if it's important, it's worth doing.

I hope that's what they learn from all this.

191. Then they whine when Ferraro makes a comment about this type of thing
Here are Obamanation's demands:

1) 100% of blacks have to vote for Obama. The 10% or so that don't are traitors (just ask Nutter, Tubb-Jones, and even Tavis Smiley who didn't vote for Hillary but merely criticized Obama once).

2) 50+1% of whites, Latinos, and Asians must vote for Obama. If they don't this is prima facie evidence they are racist groups.

3) Each state Obama loses is immediately declared to be racist. Why else would the messiah lose?

21. Cheer Up
Losing 15 delegates means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Obama wasnt going to win PA. It's a state tailor made for a Hillary win. Hillary will win West Virginia, probably Indiana. Obama will crush her in North Carolina, and beat her in Oregon and the other remaining minor states. We go to convention with the delegate count right about where it is now.

Those around them who thought that we were or should be beyond them. I deal with those attitudes due to my friends of any other color but white.

Tell her that some of us are changing and growing beyond those belief systems, that it is like we are taking one step forward to only have someone else make us go back two steps. Her experience will only make her stronger in her beliefs that all people should be treated the same so ignore those who think somehow that it does not happen because it does, every day, but like Obama says we will move forward and ignore those who would steal our freedoms from us, our shared community from us and that we should hope for them to join us one day as well in our search for, our creation of a better future together.

Yes, it is a feeling of betrayal and anger towards certain groups, and bitterness because the DNC is standing idly by while Bill continues to race bait and whisper all across the country. Everyone rallied around our frontrunner, Kerry, in 2004. But not Obama... noooo...

Shame on you. Shame on anyone that takes anecdotal evidence and makes it an excuse to divide people along racial lines.

Which is what YOU are doing.

Keep this shit up. Go on, do it. You put the GOP to SHAME.

LAME. SHAME.

'My heart hurts' for YOU, pulling this crap out and trying to tar Obama's opponent with a racial smear. "Ewwwwww, feel sorry for my CHILD because some 'racist fucks' aren't supporting Oh-BAAAAAH-MAAAH!!!"

How fucking sick. And not "sick" like the kids define it.

How disgusting--that's probably still universal.

And that isn't a "new possiblity"--it's just pathetic.

I can't believe that your "graduate student daughter" is that stupid. I doubt she is. Unless she's in the Romper Room Graduate School.

Let's be honest. INDEED.

Well, you might want to sit her down and let her know that not all white people vote for the black candidate just because of their skin color. Just as he does deserve an equal opportunity to run, he also does NOT deserve the vote simply because of his color or the voter's color.

Some of us would have voted for him if not for his own attitude toward the working poor and his pandering to homophobes, Republicans, Reagan, and everything else right wing under the sun. A couple years ago, when I knew much less about him, I would have seriously voted for him. Not now. Come May, in the NC Primary, your daughter is going to be "betrayed" by yet another mostly white person. She'll have to learn from this to not blame an entire race for not doing what she wants. Your daughter and the volunteers she worked with did make a difference! Obama didn't win, but the hard work of volunteers like your daughter probably caused him to get a larger share of delegates than he would have without them.

One thing I've noticed about the Obama campaign is, like the Dean campaign, he has inspired a lot of young people to get involved in politics. Regardless of whether or not he is our next president, the young people who worked on his campaign can continue the legacy of his campaign by remaining politically active with the progressive movement and the Democratic Party.

I'm talking about a specific instance, and so is everyone on this thread. Open your eyes and take a look around.

About one in five voters said the race of the candidates was among the top factors in their vote. About as many said that about the candidates' gender. White voters who said race was a factor supported Clinton over Obama by 3-to-1, while whites who said race wasn't a factor divided between Clinton and Obama more evenly.

132. Actually, no.
You really must take off that helmet. Then you'd be able to see that you were replying to my post about another poster's history of race-baiting. It's called a "subthread" and oft veers off from the main topic to related topics. If you meant to take issue with something else, you should have replied to another post, because your rambling is not related to the one to which you replied.

And as to your idiotic statistic, it's something only a pollster could have made up. Ask people if race matters to them in a candidate (curiously, only white voters), then when they say it does act suprised when they vote for the candidate of their colour. Basically, that white people who were voting on race voted for the white candidate. That's approaching a tautology, there. But your and other attempts to cast that pall over white voters in general (also curious is the lack of a number attached to that, maybe you could find how many voters that really was) and say that they en masse "betrayed" anyone is just foolish.

If Obama can't win Dem primaries because of racism how can he win the GE when there will be more racist voters (indies and rethugs) voting? Obamites can't be that stupid. This is a lame attempt to gin up guilt among whites, Latinos, and Asians who vote for Clinton. Notice 0 complaints about Obama winning 80-92% black support in every state?

and other volunteers who were willing to spend their time giving our country its best chance to move forward. Pennsylvania is just one important battle among many. She shouldn't feel bad at all. Tell her to cheer up, take a brief break and continue the fight to ensure Obama becomes the nominee. That's the goal for now.

86. Maybe you really can't teach some old dogs new tricks
From the New York Times:

"In a campaign where demographics seem to be destiny, one of the most striking factors is the segregation of voters by age. In state after state, older voters have formed a core constituency for Mrs. Clinton, who is 60, while younger voters have coalesced around Mr. Obama, who is 46. Age has been one of the most consistent indicators of how someone might vote — more than sex, more than income, more than education. Only race is a stronger predictor of voting than age, and then only if a voter is black, not if he or she is white.

"Age is likely to play a particularly strong role in the Democratic primary Tuesday in Pennsylvania. The outmigration of young people has left the state with the second-highest proportion of people over 65 in the country, after Florida. Fifty-eight percent of registered Democrats are older than 45, a consistent dividing line in the race.

* * *

"John Peterman, 85, a former Navy engineer, said he supported Mrs. Clinton because 'the world is not ready for a black president.' His wife, Mary, 81, agreed with him.

"Noel Stein, 72, and his wife, Judy, 67, both like Mrs. Clinton. Mrs. Stein said she liked her 'because she's a woman' and Mr. Stein said he liked her because of her husband."

Although I'm a supporter of Senator Obama, I can't help but feel a little bad for Senator Clinton. Even if she ekes out a win in the primary and GE, I don't see how she takes a second term. A quarter of her base will probably be dead in four years. Plus, you'd have to stoop pretty low to seek the support of people (like Mr. and Mrs. Peterman), who think "the world is not ready for a black president." That's a vote I'd rather not have. But maybe that just shows why I'll never be a politician. ;-)

I also feel bad for Hillary because of this: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/23/opinion/23wed1.html?ex=1366603200&en=25460e9924d12741&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

Yes, I am celebrating an Obama victory tonight.

We kept the margin within ten points - she has at best, a Pyrrhic victory tonight, which depleted her funds and ran her deep into debt, without delivering enough delegates to solve that delegate math problem.

So maybe we lost one battle, but we're gonna win this war!!!

He did an excellent job narrowing the gap in state that was a "Clinton stronghold" and where she had the backing of the Governor, big city Mayors and their political machines.

PA was never a win on the Obama campaign's tactical plan. Of course, it would have been nice, but the campaign did an excellent job of getting the message across to voters and limiting damage in a state whose demographics favor Clinton.

Don't let the media horse race spin get you down. Obama put in a good showing and is still the front runner. He did a great job of sidestepping a potential "blowout."

Clinton won today's battle, but Obama will win the war.

117. I join you in your concern.
"I'm trying very hard to remain objective, but my heart hurts for her
and for all the young people enthralled with the possibility of politics."

My heart hurts for my own kids as well. They all went for Obama in a big way. I warned them... but the young must dream, so I cut them their slack. And I will be here in the end... to encourage and explain.

"I wonder how this will effect all the young people who threw their hearts
into this new possibility?"

No doubt it will have the same effect it did on many of our generation. And... many of my peers drifted away into apathy after McGovern. Humphrey. But it doesn't have to be that way! We, as parents, can stem the bleed by being honest. By telling them how we keep up the good fight. Year after year. The importance of the downticket offices. Congressional power. The way the presidency works in this country (or doesn't.) The hope that B.O. will be back on our top ticket when he is seasoned a bit more.

All of these things need to be said if and when the real disappointment comes. Be it next month, or in November.

Your daughter helped her candidate close a 20-point gap to fewer than 10 and only lose a little ground in terms of his advantage in pledged delegates. Obama still has good momentum going into the final 9 states.

It's tough to see the big picture while working on the front lines, but here it is: Obama lost this battle but should still win the war!

146. Noel, I just can't believe some of the replies on here, I don't know if they're being obtuse on
purpose, but I understood perfectly what you were talking about when you said betrayed by white people. I'm sorry she had to have this revelation about racism in such a time when she was feeling so high and pumped up about the election. I'm mostly sorry that there are people on this very board who see nothing wrong with the racist tactics the Hillary Campaign used, just to get votes. I'm sickened that Democrats will approve of actions that will further divide our country.

Tell you daughter that she did good, we need her help by calling in NC or Indiana. I know this was painful for her, I was just like her when I was her age.

148. She must have heard some really racist comments, or seen some really
nasty attitudes to feel she has been betrayed by white people.

Anything specific, or just a general ill feeling (because Obama came out behind)?

voting for Obama, there was talk of not voting for a muslim (now where did that start I wonder?), and other racist smears. There are a couple posts up there that give more details.

159. Oh please....
I can't believe your post. Betrayed by white people???? Does Barack Obama have any ownership in his ability to connect with the working class? He has to be able to do that in order to win the GE. Why do you blame this on white people. Does Barack Obama have no responsibility? Does he not need to examine why he is not winning these votes? Is it possible that he has been a bit arrogant in his thinking, a bit arrogant in believing that his speeches should win him the nomination.

Do you think he did not use every underhanded and negative trick he could to win PA. It just didn't work for him. He outspent her 3-1. The media!!! I don't remember a candidate ever having more media in their corner than Obama.

160. They will learn from us that good can win over evil, but the fight is never easy...
...I, too, wish this would have been over last night so we, with Obama, could move on to fight McCain. But that's not the way it happened.

Take it from me, someone who has decades of political activism under her belt: this happens in political races. It doesn't all move ahead smoothly like we wish it would. That's not how it goes.

But tell your daughter and others to take heart, take a deep breath, and get back to work for Obama. He is truly a great leader, on the level of JFK, but is so much better at this stage of the game than JFK was, it makes my head spin.

Be grateful for your fellow Obama supporters and their willingness to work for real change, and for an end to the old Bush/Rove politics. Without moving beyond that kind of politics, there can be no change.

I also want to thank you for being part of the movement to carry Obama to the Oval Office. It is the participation of each and every one of us that has made our movement what it is.

dark realities hit you hard. That said, congratulate her for her work, let her know we all thank her and support her.
There's been a LOT of shit in this campaign, the powers that be don't like to give up easily. We have to fight to take
them down and every little victory is a cause for celebration.

I am not at all surprised by Clintons' win. She was ahead by 26 points 6 weeks ago. She had to get down in the mud, get
further into debt, and burn a LOT of bridges to pull out a single-digit victory. Big deal. She's already lost, she just won't
admit it. Ignore her spin and keep the faith.
Hugs to you and your daughter. We love you! :grouphug:

182. There are
millions of young people who campaigned their butt off for Clinton. What's your point exactly. If you want to blame anyone, blame your candidate instead of feeling "betrayed by white people". Get a friggin' grip already. Typical Obama supporter, put the blame on anything or anyone except your candidate. Just another "excuse" from the Obama camp, he can't hold up to debates, he can't hold up to scrutiny, and most importantly, he can't carry states that are vital in the GE.

197. Somebody send all these "whites are racist" threads to Ferraro
Edited on Wed Apr-23-08 05:41 PM by jackson_dem
These complaints, which were made even by Obama's surrogate on Larry King to "explain" him losing PA after spending $16 million in 6 weeks, go to the heart of what Ferraro said. She basically said Obama benefits from so-called "white guilt" and the country is "caught up in the concept" of electing a black man to correct the country's original sin. Here we have Obamites, seeing Obama tanking with whites (and Latinos too, he lost them 66-32 in TX. Latinos will be receiving their memos by the time Puerto Rico rolls around like they did after Nevada and before California and Texas) and what do Obamites do? Try to induce white guilty to salvage him.

Barack Obama because:

A: He is a black man like me that has the same sort of ignorance and racism projected at him that I do.
B: Hillary Clinton is a crook, a lier, and will say and so anything to become President.
C: It's the right thing to do.

It would be nice if I could raise our daughter in a world that doesn't make judgments on people simply because of the color of her skin, width of her nose, and the straightness of her hair.
