McCain Wants State GOP Not To Air "Offensive" TV Ad

Posted: 12:20 PM Apr 23, 2008

Reporter: Bill Wilson

John McCain wants the North Carolina Republican Party not to air what he calls an offensive television ad.

The TV ad has not aired yet, but a preview copy that's on the party's web site says Barack Obama is "too extreme for North Carolina." The ad also says both the two Democratic front runners for governor have endorsed Obama.

In an e-mail to state party chair Linda Daves, McCain said the ad "degrades our civics and distracts us from the very real differences we have with the Democrats."

McCain said he implores the state party not to run the advertisement.

GOP spokesman Brent Woodcox says the ad will begin running statewide Monday.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Text of John McCain's Email

Dear Chairman Daves,

From the beginning of this election, I have been committed to running a respectful campaign based upon an honest debate about the great issues confronting America today. I expect all state parties to do so as well. The television advertisement you are planning to air degrades our civics and distracts us from the very real differences we have with the Democrats. In the strongest terms, I implore you to not run this advertisement.

This ad does not live up to the very high standards we should hold ourselves to in this campaign. We need to run a campaign that is worthy of the people we seek to serve. There is no doubt that we will draw sharp contrasts with the Democrats on fundamental issues critical to the future course of our country. But we need not engage in political tactics that only seek to divide the American people.

Once again, it is imperative that you withdraw this offensive advertisement.

John McCain

10. Maybe so, but it is far easier to deflect these swift boat attacks now
You can stand up on TV and asay over and over this is so outrageous even your own party nominee thinks you're scum, it will really push this crap to the margins.

6. NO KUDOS!! Please, McSame has done this before!! He distances himself from negative adds by saying
...these things on the radio or in the back ground then bringing them up on TV etc as a negative against Obama!!

No Kudos please

7. Wise political move on McCain's part
It makes him look gracious and like he wants to "play fair". It will be interesting if he continues to act this way once the GE is underway. I doubt it. Right now, he's sitting on the sidelines, letting Obama and Clinton tire each other out--he can afford to stop a mudslinging ad when the two Dems are doing enough of that on their own. But when he finally has only one opponent, I bet he ignores such ads.

12. I commend Senator McCain for requesting that this
attack ad be pulled. He ran a respectful campaign against Romney (who he despises) so I expect the same in the GE. However, he like Obama (or Clinton) have little to no control over the 527's and other special interest groups, so i expect the usual mudslinging in the fall..

16. It's better that it comes directly from McCain's mouth
than from an ad. Ads work on a lot of people, but people listening to McCranky say those things straight out could backfire on him because of his previous statements on race, i.e. "gooks". (that makes me feel so icky just typing that :puke: )

Hopefully, it won't help the Republicans.

18. BS.....ulterior motive: premptively stopping any such ads against himself...
Nah, this move is only to allow him to seem to be taking the high road and then later on be able to attack all the "radical, liberal" 527s from doing a similar thing to him.

Why? Because he knows there will be a shit load of money available for the Dems.

All a ploy.
