Poll question: Are people who ask if Obama is the messiah delusional or political hacks?
If various people on this board ask if Obama is the messiah, and present this question in such a way to insinuate that any support for Obama is messianic fervor, how would you define those people?

3. I've noticed whenever a political leader becomes extremely popular, they start up with the messiah
or cult crap. I believe this is an innate fear of the beast coming in to play from Biblical lore combined with the powers that be pulling those emotional strings whenever they perceive a champion of the people rising. The powers that be view this as a threat against their own status quo domination of the society.

16. My Journey to Obama. Coming to Obama. How I Found Obama.
But the clincher came on March 17, when she met the Democratic contender face to face. She describes how he lit up the room with his wide smile, shook her hand and thanked her for volunteering.

"He looked at me, and the look in his eyes was worth 1,000 words," said Mack, now a regional field organizer. Obama hugged her and whispered something in her ear – she was so thrilled she doesn't remember what it was.

Then Mack brought home the point of her story for the crowd of 100 or so eager volunteers, sipping coffee and watching a PowerPoint presentation in the Obama campaign office on a recent Saturday.

"Did that make more impact on you than if I had talked about his health care plan or his stance on the environment?" she asked.

On the verge of a hectic few weeks leading to Super Tuesday, the crucial Feb. 5 multistate primary including California's, Mack wanted to drill home one of the campaign's key strategies: telling potential voters personal stories of political conversion.

She urged volunteers to hone their own stories of how they came to Obama – something they could compress into 30 seconds on the phone.

"Work on that, refine that, say it in the mirror," she said. "Get it down."

She told the volunteers that potential voters would no doubt confront them with policy questions. Mack's direction: Don't go there.

a political hack trying to win votes with religious bullshit. I think I'll just stay home because, of course, the majority of americans are JUST LIKE THAT.... and no Hillary supporters are, of course. Except for the miracle stories of her winning the democratic candidacy, of course. No shortage of poltical b.s. in American life, is there?

25. No worse than the Hillary is __________ folks
One thing I find amusing is that some of the posters who object most strenuously to characterizations about Obama, the campaign or its supporters also tend to be the ones who post the nastiest epithets about Hillary.

Same is true about Republicans, btw, except that they tend to be even more over the top- whine even louder when it comes back their way.

Seems to have become a common cultural norm in 21st Century America.

26. Gee, where did anyone get that idea...oh yeah, from OBAMA

From the campaign trail:
http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/dominic-lawson/dominic-lawson-obama-must-beware-of-turning-into-a-cult-787298.html

Obama has a stock line which seems to play straight into the notion that he is an instrument of the divine. To a number of audiences, he has declared: "My job is be so persuasive that if there's anybody left out there who is still not sure whether they will vote, or is still not clear who they will vote for, that a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down on you, you will experience an epiphany ... and you will suddenly realise that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama."

To be fair to Obama, this is said in a manner which just leaves open the idea that he is not being entirely serious. Yet I don't believe that those applauding this riff see it as elevated irony – and it is slightly creepy even as a joke. Perhaps it isn't a joke at all, but completely sincere: Obama's speeches are studded with religious rhetoric. For example, last October he told an audience of 4,000 that he hoped to be "an instrument of God" and that "I am confident that we can create a Kingdom right here on Earth".
