I enjoyed your over due piece on Olbermann. It’s about time we heard a sensible critique of his atrocious program. Even before he went in the tank for Obama his show was predictable and lousy. From his never ending special comments, to his familiar nightly guests, one thing you could count on was a boring unwatchable hour. I must admit I was slow to turn him off, but my first clues came when his nightly breathless scandals on republicans would always turn out to be hyped or untrue. He would put something out there and it would soon evaporate. Then he would just move on to more of the same on a different so called scandal. Then the obsession with O’Reilly turned into his latest parade of greatest hits of the most evil woman alive, Hillary. She has done wonders for Keith; she has all but cured him of his fascination of Bill O. I had a little game and it involved Hardball and Countdown. I would turn on either show and expect to see an open mouth, snarling the Clinton name, and telling us of their latest demonic activities. I must say I was rarely disappointed.



I would add that since the demise of Bob Parry’s sanity The Howler is by far my best morning read.

I saw an interview where two military guys that were there said that people were in range of snipers almost at all times in Bosnia, but the snipers just get one shot. The possibility of being shot at that air strip did exist. Why would the planes land like they did? That in itself is dangerous. The biggest problem I have reading Somerby these days is the way he bends his own rules for Bill and Hillary. Somerby's stock in trade is careful analysis of particular words and phrases. He quotes Hillary as saying: "The facts are that (Barack Obama) has said in the last week that he really liked the ideas of the Republicans over the last 10 to 15 years." Hillary even says that "We can give you the exact quote."

This is, quite obviously, a blatant, outright, and as much as I hate to use the word, calculated lie on Hillary's part.

Nowhere -- NOWHERE -- did Obama ever say he "really liked the ideas of the Republicans over the last 10 to 15 years." Twisting Obama's words that way is no accident. It's a smear. It's exactly the word that Somerby decries. It's dirty politics.

How does Somerby deal with that? Here's his response:

"Was that a faithful paraphrase of Obama’s statement? Different people will think different things."

Different people will think different things? You've gotta be kidding me! Somerby just can't bring himself to hold Hillary to the same standards he holds everyone else to, and that really diminishes his integrity and worth as a commentator. within a courteous context. Some of it may be regional. In my area (Pacific Northwest - NorCal, Oregon, Washington) Sen. Clinton continues to be dramatically unpopular with INDs especially. We are concerned about the "down ticket" out here if she is the nominee. This may be much different in other areas of the country. My expertise is local.

From all our contacts with the voters this year, it is pretty clear that Obama would be the more broadly popular top of ticket candidate for the Democratic cause out here and very helpful to people like Charlie Brown who is trying to take away a GOP seat in CD-4. For this reason alone Obama has the nearly universal support among the hard-headed pols on our Central Committee now (although, earlier, Edwards was strong also).
