Obama may not be the first choice of many democrats, so why assume he will be the last choice?

The argument that the people who voted for Hillary Clinton in the primary will absolutely not vote for Barack Obama in the general election seems absurd. People cite the exit polling about white voters voting overwhelmingly for Clinton over Obama, but all these polls say to me is that, for whatever reason, these people's FIRST choice was Hillary Clinton. Why would these voters, then, prefer McCain to Obama in the general election? Where does that idea come from?

Obama may not be their first choice of democratic nominee, but why would he be their last choice of presidential nominee?

Please explain this to me?

1. Obama will be able to make his case to voters, and I think he'll do

a damned persuasive job of it, and a lot of independents will abandon "maverick" McCain and come to the blue team instead.

Most Democrats, IMO, will support the ticket.

2. I don't think they would, when it comes down to it.

I do think when it comes down to it, if Hillary were to steal it, there could be just enough voters that wouldn't vote for her just because she did steal it - causing her more of a chance to lose over McSame.

3. I started out as an any anyone

but Hillary voter. Went the Kucinich, Dodd, Edwards, Obama route. Now, I am solidly in the Obama camp and think he is a truly extraordinary leader and candidate. I am definitely NOT one who is waiting for Gore or Edwards to swoop in and save the party by somehow getting the nomination. While I believe that either of them would make a wonderful POTUS, I would fear the vast disillusionment of all of the new, young voters that Obama has so inspired.

4. Beats me! I can't envision ANYONE,

not even a Republican, voting for John McCain. It is difficult for me to believe anything that man says. Are there that many stupid people in this country? There are two Democrats left running--give me either of them.
