Oklahoma Gov. Henry Endorses Uniter Obama

Posted Apr 23, 08 10:37 AM CDT in Politics

Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry endorsed Barack Obama yesterday, saying the Illinois senator was the only one who could “transcend partisan games.” Henry is the third Oklahoma superdelegate to back Obama, the Tulsa World reports, bucking the results of the state’s Feb. 5 primary—which Hillary Clinton won 54-31%. Clinton has just one Oklahoma superdelegate, while six remain uncommitted.

“I believe Senator Obama is uniquely positioned to unite our nation and move beyond the divisiveness and partisan skirmishes that too often characterize politics as usual in Washington,” Henry said in a statement.

It would seem odd indeed that a Governor of an entire state (a conservative one at that) in where Hillary won by probably her largest margin way back on Super Tuesday would endorse Sen. Obama the day after he lost Pennsylviana (although not by double digits! :) )

Do you think that there was a message sent with that endorsement?

Let's discuss.

3. So maybe you Obama cultists will now stop saying that any superdelegate who doesn't support the
candidate that one their state, is going against the will of the people.

I just love how you all have expected the elected officials in states Obama won, to back him.

But you won't ask the same of the elected officials in states that Sen. Clinton won.

6. We don't say that. We say the one that holds the most pledged delegates should win. Only Clinton
supporters (and Hillary herself) try to drive a wedge between voters and SD.

They, the Hillary Campaign?
I agree with you. They will do and say anything. They will lie about fundraising numbers and everything! They feel like Bush in December of 2000 to me: Of course Florida's involved, and Hillary hopes that the SDs will play Supreme court, and of course Black people can play the Chads....where they end up not counting.

Very insightful of you.

5. I'm from Oklahoma and I definitely think there is a message
Gov. Henry has insisted he would not endorse anyone until this summer, time and time again.

For him to endorse, in a state that she won, in a red state no doubt, he obviously sees more hope with Obama.

Obama will have major coat tails, there is no doubt.

Gov. Henry does not take decisions lightly.

I am thrilled that he endorsed now, and it sent a BIG message to me.

17. Your welcome it is with that endorsement
Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 09:47 PM by SunsetDreams
and also the endorsements of Sam Nunn and David Boren who together have over 60 years in foreign policy experience, and the Clinton SD's wavering, that I know a message is being sent.

I know for a fact, that Gov. Henry would not go against the vote here, unless something was in the works.

It is over, the math is not there for her, messages are being sent. It is up to her how she receives those messages. It will only become clearer in the next few weeks.

They are trying to gently send her a message, so she can have some dignity, and hopefully come to the conclusion herself.

10. Thank you, Frenchie..that didn't
quite click the other day when I read this about Gov Brad Henry(SuperD) endorsing Obama. I wasn't even thinking that hilary had won OK.

The Gov must be pretty set on Obama to buck his constituents like this..it's not as if hilary's been having a positive influence on anything, though.

I have profound respect for anyone endorsing Obama because I know what he stands for and I know what hilary stands for..and, never the twain shall meet.

14. Yeah, I think the message is "screw what the voters wanted, super-delegate, vote your conscience"

And I think it should send a message to all the super-delegates in states that Obama carried to go with Senator Clinton if they think she'd be a stronger candidate against McCain.

First thing I thought of when I initially saw the endorsement announced.

The SD's got the message loud and clear and have started acting on it...start the trickle of your endorsements over the next 2 weeks.

Add up the number of things that have been announced this week since Tuesday: This endorsement, HRC losing 70 donors (with not so nice comments included in the article), the article about her lower level staffers bailing in large numbers, her financial manager leaving and reportedly going over to Obama's campaign...victory in PA, my ass. I'd say people in the know are trying to tell us otherwise.

32. Sounds to me like it shows that some superdelegates think they SHOULD consider
factors other than the "popular vote" or the "will of the people" in determining who the nominee should be. A two edge sword, that one.

33. TX SD's remain uncommitted after PA..at least one says he may decide "in 2 weeks"
I think this is telling...2 weeks as in right after NC and Indiana primaries?? One thing is for sure, HRC faux win didn't fool TX SD's.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/politics/state/stories/DN-superdelegates_24pol.ART.State.Edition1.46d87b8.html

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean is antsy and has urged superdelegates to make a decision by July 1.

Some Texans, such as John Patrick of Friendswood, say they're willing to meet that deadline but are also prepared to remain quiet until the nomination hits the floor of the party's national convention in Denver in August. Of the 32 superdelegates the state will send to the convention, 13 have announced support for Mrs. Clinton, 10 for Mr. Obama, and nine have announced no preference.

Mr. Patrick and others said they wanted to see what the remaining contests would show about either candidate's ability to win in November.

"Am I ready to make a commitment at this point? No, I'm not," he said. "Will I be ready in two weeks? Perhaps."

----------
And wouldn't you love to get a list of those challenges that are already filed?? Bet anything that they are mostly all HRC challenges towards Obama delegates.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/politics/state/stories/DN-txdems_23pol.ART.State.Edition1.46af2a2.html

She's ahead: Hillary Rodham Clinton won the overall popular vote in the March 4 primary, earning 65 delegates to Barack Obama's 61. But 67 other delegates are determined by conventions at the precinct, county and state levels.

No, he is: Mr. Obama has had more delegates at each of the first two steps, putting him on track to win more delegates overall once the state convention is complete.

Still counting: Party officials are unsure which candidate will have more of the 7,000-plus delegates at the state convention, and they're sorting through dozens of challenges to some delegates' credentials.

What's next: Resolving the delegate challenges, which were due last week. Party officials on Tuesday could not say how many had been filed.
