OBAMA ON FOX - liveblogging the highlights
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 10:12 AM by panAmerican
Posted http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5703662">here and http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/27/10743/8377/134/504300">DailyKos.

First 16 minutes spent on race:
** Wallace asked about Clinton's win of 72/28 among PA white union household and white catholics

** Obama said he beat Clinton soundly among those same Whites in IA, WI, VA, etc.

** Wallace says Wright's recent public foray might hurt Obama's campaign. Says Rev Wright said things people are legitimately offended by, but he focused too much on what America used to do wrong, instead of some of what we've done right. However, media did try to simplify and caricature Wright, therefore he had the right to defend himself and a 40-year career.

** Race is still a factor in this problem, but if he loses presidency that will not be the reason. It will have been due to some campaign missteps or failure to communicate.

Associations
**Ayers: by the time Obama met him, Ayers was a professor. Said he's sure Wallace serves on boards where others he doesn't agree with also serve. Mayor Daley also serves on the same board as Obama and Ayers, and Mayor Daley led prosecution against Ayers' wife in the 70s.

**Coburn: Obama he says he works much more closely in Senate with Coburn who suggested death penalty for abortionists, but that relationship is ignored while Ayers is scrutinized.

Governemnt
**Obama thinks we should experiment with education. For instance, we should pay more to teachers who develop themselves.

**MENTIONED DailyKos!!!!!!!!!!!! Opposed nomination of Bush's nomination of Justice Roberts, but opposed tactics to derail process.

**Thinks some people in the abortion debate try to polarize views, and that is reflected in the way the bills are written. So he still opposes late-term abortion proposed legislation because they often don't contain provisions for health of mother.

** Says most people who have stocks do through 401ks. Only 3-4% of Americans make more than 102K/yr. So those are not middle class people, and therefore raising payroll taxes on them will not affect true middle class people making $50k-$75K.

** Says McCain is elitist for wanting to give corporations and people like Obama's friend Warren Buffett more tax cuts without a way of paying for them, especially after McCain called them irresponsible when Bush introduced them.

Military
** Says Petraeus is good tactician, but won't allow him to set the agenda.

** It would be a mistake to ignore Petraeus' opinion, but it would be Obama's job as commander-in-chief to set strategic agenda.

Rest of campaign
** Not ducking debates; already had 21; with only 2 weeks (added on edit)left, he wants to spend the time face-to-face answering voters.

** Punts on VP questions until he's nominee. SHUT WALLACE RIGHT UP, lol

** Cites a 48-yr old White woman who will be voting for the first time only because of Obama.

** Says avg donation is $96, did a good job of mobilizing campaign in small increments.

** Because not everybody in future will be able to match his fundraising success, Obama is willing to discuss public financing with McCain as long as there's a limit to spending by third parties such as the RNC and swiftboating organizations.

** Thinks he has right temperment for presidency; doesn't get too high or too low depending on what's going on.

** Asked about mistakes he's made, Obama says he makes mistakes all the time; sometimes talks too much instead of listening. Will try to remedy spending more time with his little girls in the coming months.

RoundTable Spin
** Of course they mentioned NOTHING of the substance of the Rev Wright interview. The only clip played was the excerpt that was already out before the interview. Wallace played for Obama only the segment where Rev Wright says media being unfair.

** Mara Liasson says Obama should try and appeal to working class White voters NOW instead of working in the GE to "bring them home".

** Brit Hume says Obama should have come on Fox sooner because the points he made are actually what attracted so many people to him hin the first place.

** Kristol says Obama likeable, but no substance in the interview, *that Clinton* (added on edit) would have had more specifics, that Obama acted like he didn't need to get into the details.

** Kristol says Clinton is better candidate Obama better campaigner, Clinton has primary popular vote lead.

** Liasson thinks Obama should fight harder, as if Indiana is do-or-die, even if it isn't.

3. I would say this interview hurt John McCain more than anyone else...
There are a lot of Republicans sitting on the fence that do not like John McCain. And they are no very fond of Hillary either. Obama appeals to a lot them.

It doesn't mean that he is a Republican. He came across as moderate and reasonable. But, he did not back down on raising taxes on the wealthy or changing the strategy in Iraq. He was brilliant in this interview.

15. The line about being level headed was directed at McCain
whose obvious weakness is his hot temper. I think this needs to be continuously brought up and exploited. People don't like the direction in which our country has been led, and I think would be skittish at selecting a commander in chief who can't keep cool in a crises.

6. I'll watch it when it's rerun today, and thanks for your post!
Kristol is a PNAC and the last thing they want is a president who won't play their games. Whatever he says you can figure not one word of it is the truth.

This quote: ** Brit Hume says Obama should have come on Fox sooner because the points he made are actually what attracted so many people to him hin the first place.

Did Barack hold his own with the Fox boys or what?

GoBama!!

8. Saw the first 30 minutes or so
I simply can't give Fox noise any more of my time than that. But Obama did a pretty good job as I think Wallace was trying to set him up to be the "angry black man" or something along those lines. And who the hell cares what the panelists say? They are all RWers anyway and likely have no use for Obama. Or Clinton for that matter. Obama has run a pretty good campaign so far and doesn't need help from Fox.

14. When was this interview aired? >>
I suffered through an hour 8-9:00 (CDT). They kept saying it was coming, but it never did. I can catch it at 1:00; but... when - or where (Fox channel rather than FoxNews?) -- was it on???

On regular over the air Fox. I think it's called "Fox "news" Sunday Morning" or something like that. I have no idea whether it will be re-broadcast on Fox noise later or not.

10. Smart
Fox while slightly evil is smart. They aren't going to hurt their ratings like ABC did by piling straight into his face during the questioning. ABC already did that for him. They will get him during other parts of their shows, constantly like they always do.

12. Thanks for the synopsis.
It will be interesting to see what sound bites Hannity and O'Reilley pick out from this. Kudos to Obama for doing it, though.

13. Initially I thought it was a bad idea for Obama to appear on
Fox. After watching him, I think he did an excellent job and made a step forward.

17. I was afraid he would be too nice to them in his demeanor.
He managed to take a few shots @ Wallace by saying he's sure that Wallace doesn't agree with the views of some people with whom he works in different organizations. He got really excited about taking on John on taxes, which I liked. I wish he was more adamant about other topics too. He carries himself well, of course, but I hope it doesn't come across as if he's too detatched from people's problems.

23. Not on here yet
I used to watch Fox News so I could see what they were saying but I had to stop as my BP couldn't take it any longer. My feeling is that die-hard FNC devotees will only see what they want to see. I hope I'm wrong. These are the people who buy into the flag pin BS and still support the Iraq war.

I may have to take a Tums and tune in.
