On Fox News Sunday, Chris "Obama-Watch" Wallace, brought up Rev. Wright (to no one's surprise). This came with the amusing caveat, "I wasn't even sure I would ask about Wright (I'm sure Jon and Stephen will have fun with that clip!)

Senator Obama's response, "I go to church not to worship the pastor, to worship God".

Something people of all faiths can understand. Something peole of no faith can understand. Quick sound-byte that the media can use.

I almost refused to watch it because it was on Fox. And I thought for certain it would have been a cross between the last debate, and that general guy from Fox asking questions like a backwater lawyer trying to get his first 'BIG' win against a little old lady for running a light at 5mph, hitting a parked garbage truck.

Pleasant surprise, but I blacked out after the first 5min of the commentary.

12. My understanding is that Rev. Wright's church was attended by most of

Chicago's Black leaders and that Obama established many of his early political connections there. His choice of a church may have more to do with the congregation than the preacher.

I think that many people regard religion only as a statement of beliefs, and that attending a church or belonging to a denomination signals only adhesion to orthodoxy. It is far from the truth. Religion is much richer, sociologically and culturally speaking. Moreover, churches are communities in which disagreements occur.

One can worship, or pray, anywhere. Church attendance is only necessary when one wishes to pray or worship in a public group.

of the community. It is where life and death is honored and celebrated. It is where communities gather to find solace. It is where people go to pray, and to find strength. Church is many things to many people. I do not believe that I can judge why any one person chooses to go to Church. But then again, I have a hard time judging another person's life by 'excerpts' from a Sermon as well.

31. It's a way to connect with the community in which he worked.

I worked in community services in Minneapolis inner city neighborhoods for nearly 10 years and find the whole Rev Wright thing to be completely ho hum. For the most part, the church is the center of the inner city community. It makes perfect sense that those who work together to improve the community would be members of this church.

It's also no surprise that Obama attended this church for 20 years. This is the best way to connect and be a part of the community as a community organizer and political leader. It is also no surprise that Obama crossed paths with some unsavory characters. A large part of community services is about acceptance and tolerance. If Obama had to distance himself from everyone who did something unsavory in their lives, it would be pretty hard to do his job. The nature of inner city life is a tough one and it attracts all kinds.

How Rev Wright chose to reach those he was trying to help is also no surprise. It is more important that he has found a way to reach them than it is how those on the outside view his methods. If it works, then more power to him. He sounds like a great man.
