When will we exploit the fracture between McCain and most of the Republican Party?
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 11:05 PM by Duke Newcombe
Full Disclosure: I support Barack Obama for the Democratic Party nomination.

It is obvious that this "unity" behind the man is secured with paperclips and duct tape. He's still not "conservative-y" enough for many in the party, and no matter how many speeches he gives selling himself out ot CPAC, he is undependable to them--or at least that is the perception. Let us run with it. Let's send that message out to any Repub or repub-leaning person and outlet we can.

The main points of attack?

1. "McCain's 11th-hour conversion to Conservatism is out of convenience, not conviction"

2. "Don't trust what he says--trust what he does"

3. "McCain-Feingold/McCain-Kennedy"

Yes, we actually believe he was in some of his few and far between lucid moments when he goes with "us", but it's false. Your usual suspects are already complaining about this "imperfection" of his (Rush, Hannity, etc). This is something that will easily fracture the party and cause Conservatives to stay home. As long as we can keep them and their media mouthpieces fixated on some long gone Ronnie Regan worship instead of the here and now, the disaffection will grow, Republicans will stay home, or even--gasp--take another look at our reasonable nominee (Obama, no doubt!)

I don't mind telling you that as a Democrat, I have absolutely NO problem exploiting and exacerbating that divide.

Opinions?

Duke

7. Don't know how effective that will be...
More reasonable Republican voters already don't like Bush (either anymore, or not so much), so that's low hanging fruit for the Democratic Party.

I'm talking about shutting down the hardcore faction with this attack.

9. Well we could encourage the Ron Paulers
There's trouble a-brewing on that quarter. Still no McCain stuff anywhere that I've seen. More Ron Paul. In fact last week, about a half-dozen energetic white-haired guys were standing on an overpass waving signs at motorists.

I don't get their nutty economic beliefs, but they're against this damn war too. Wave, honk, egg 'em on...hell, if you're the kind to talk to people, engage them. There might be some common ground there that might come in handy later.

19. Ron Paul supporters are furious about NV state convention - no votes for nat'l delegates yet
Chaos at their convention. If I understand it, the Ron Paul supporters voted for rule changes to get some of them to be delegates rather than the pre-approved list. They figured out how to get the rules changed, print up ballots, etc. Grassroots kind of stuff that the party heads were not ready for. Party heads claimed the hotel was kicking them out and stopped the convention without finishing its business.

Anyway, will be interesting to hear what happens. Ron Paul voters might just be pissed off enough about Iraq and being silenced by their own party to vote for Obama over McCain.

25. Someone needs to ask him point blank if he thinks all birth control should be outlawed.
Most Americans don't; I'd suspect John McCain doesn't- but the base of the GOP certainly does. The HLA plank of the GOP platform as written by the anti-choice movement would criminalize the birth control pill.

Between that and the fact that he doesn't want to issue drivers licenses to stem cells, he might have a problem with big chunks of the GOP.
