I've been exercising my right to vote since 1972 and haven't missed a local, state, or national election. I've been elected on the ballot as a delegate to the state Democratic convention, have served as a Democratic Town Committee member. I've been a founding board member of a progressive Democratic group. I've donated to candidates, I've canvassed extensively, I've phone-banked in everything from aldermanic to presidential races. I've contributed to the DNC, the DCCC, and the DSCC. Ever since the impeachment proceedings in the late 90s I've been an active internet voice. I've spent the last 8 years posting (though less and less frequently), writing letters to the media (both individual reporters, columnists, ombudspersons, and editors). I've petitioned, registered phone complaints, written congresspeople, researched ... followed every story and every bill from A to Z.
Where am I now? Considering giving it up all together. I've been burying myself in work and family, and when that's not enough to keep me away from the increasingly crass and despicable bullshit, I try to find an old movie on TV or a repeat episode of some insidious home repair show.
From the media to the Supreme Court to the miasma of campaign guttersniping ... I've had it. I know I'll end up walking down to the Union Hall to cast a vote in November. But that's probably going to be it: I give up. I give up having hope that things can or will change. I've given up thinking that honesty and truth can prevail in politics. I simply give up. Better to cultivate one's own garden. If only spring would come.
