Hope would die with Obama loss
When Kennedy was shot in 1963, I thought I would never see another leader like him in my lifetime. I was wrong. Barack Obama fills that vacuum - he combines the eloquence of Kennedy with the heart, soul and passion of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

8. DING!
spot on, for any politician. I, personally, can't wait for the Obama Administration (if it comes) make the first big deal with the Republicans. I think it will probably be on Iraq, and lead to two-three more years of occupation. It's basically what he says he's going to do, if you pay attention to his history.

will they still love him?

15. but their respective history is much different
Obama's whole schtick is that he is a compromiser, that he will bring the country together, listen to all sides and work out a compromise. it's what he does. no one should be surprised when this is the end result. He has told us, repeatedly, that what he will do is compromise with republicans. you think he'll fire Petreus? not a chance.

25. you mean the 'no option can be taken off the table' line?
that's fairly standard, really. what other potential threat do we have against Iran to get them to the bargaining table? even more sanctions?

what's the old line? Diplomacy is the art of saying 'nice doggie' while looking for a stick? honestly, without the threat of military force, how are you going to convince Iran to do anything at all? our problem is that George Bush has squandered that threat in the sands of Iraq, making it temporarily meaningless. But a new President has it back.

6. That's the problem with . .
. . sanctifying politicians. There will be great disappointment when their wings melt. The only thing that spared Kennedy's wings from that final destruction was an assassin's bullet. Even so, any close look at his presidency reveals many personal and political flaws. I still consider him a damned good president and leader of all Americans in his time - when I was in my early twenties.

even with his sins, I would take him over any other past President. Obama is a staged act. I cannot understand how folks are so easily swayed by this man. When I heard him in 04 I knew then he was full of himself and a con man. Yes obama can give one hell of a speech but that is all he has got. There is no substance there, and a penny makes a lot of noise in an empty suit.

He won the election by one of the slimmest margins ever. He made mistakes and had many critics while in office.

The thing is, we forgot or forgave much of that after he was assassinated/martyred and through our collective grief, he took on stature, respect and admiration.

20. My "hope" is not dependent on a single man or woman.
We survived JFK, RFK, MLK assassinations and we can certainly survive a loss by Obama who has had less influence on any of our lives than these men. Jesse Jackson was the first to give us "hope" in a major campaign...remember "Keep hope alive?" Jesse also was the first to talk about bringing folks together..only he was talking more about bringing poor folks togeth..remember the "Rainbow Coalition?" He was roundly ridiculed and criticized yet his message far more progressive than any that Obama has demonstrated. Jesse spoke truth to power, took risks, negotiated for release of prisoners, fought for poor people in Appalacia, farmers, trash collectors... Obama is highly overrated on being something really special with the unity and hope program. He is just more acceptable to mainstsream folks because he does not offend them and allows them to be comfortable with their own prejudices.

would also perish.

Maybe the death of hope would be a bigger loss over the long term. Short term though, the fracturing and dissolution of the Democratic Party would produce some pretty spectacular sights of Hell on Earth.

You'd think that the imperative of avoiding Party Extinction would be enough to settle everybody down and make them come together around our nominee Barack Obama and focus seriously on beating McCain and the Republicans, but somehow you'd be mistaken.

32. There is something very rare and special about Obama
He inspired me to participate in the political process again after what happened with Gore.
He inspired me to look within and take action and to ask myself, "am I doing all I can to be of service to make a difference in my community". He motivates people to take positive action. He has this ability, and that is a rare and special gift.
I do not know what his presidency will be like, and I know I have a lot of positive projections on him that may or may not turn out to be true.
One last note, the extraordinary and eloquent speech he gave on race will go down in the history books, and is being taught world wide right now. Around the world, people are watching and are excited about this election, and they are pro Obama. We have had more enthusiasm and voter registration. In so many ways, he has already been a positive beacon. I applaud him exuberantly.
