Ok - this is why Wright tossed Obama under his double decker sight seeing bus
Obama joined the church for politically expedient reasons. He needed votes in that community.

His bitter comments have shown us how he really feels about religion.

I'd lay serious money on him being an atheist or an agnostic who attended Wrights church because he knew it would get him ahead in the community.

He barely paid attention to Wright lo these many years at his peril. Or maybe he did pay attention but simply didn't care.

Either way, it explains his "shock and sadness" today at the fact that Wright had the AUDACITY to be insulted by the treatment that he has suffered at the hands of his supposed protege since the campaign officially started.

Obama is a cynic wrapped in the flag of Hope and Change. And he's been playing his worshippers like a well tuned fiddle. Just like any skilled unscrupulous politician would (and if you think he has scruples - remember Rezko and Emil Jones).

Payback is a bitch. I forsee a very large fracture in his coalition of voters. Those in the AA community that support Wright will stay home in NC or vote for Clinton.

This couldn't have played out any better for the Clinton campaign. There is no reason for riots when she gets the nomination because Obama did this to himself. He has no one to blame but himself.

Both desperate and silly, really.

BTW, Iraq may be a huge issue with the college kids scared to death of a possible draft, but the economy is what you should be deflecting with, if you want the deflection to work.

102. Thanks for the strategy, but I'm fresh off of reading an account
of an Iraqi situation that has my vacillating between screaming and weeping.

I wasn't trying to be clever. I'm pissed and at the moment just fed up with all this crap - in the big picture it's not what really matters.

Maybe you could get a job with your candidate's campaign, since you're so sharp and all.

Your cartoon must be unintentionally ironic, given that Hillary just threatened to go nuclear on Iran last week.

I guess you probably missed that part while you were obsessing over your hypothetical, make-believe, loftier-than-your-own-farts opinion of Obama's ulterior motives for deciding to attending Wright's church 20 years ago, doubtless before you were cognizant enough to contain your farts in a public space, let alone form a lucid thought and express it there.

77. from wiki
In The Audacity of Hope, Obama writes that he "was not raised in a religious household." He describes his mother, raised by non-religious parents, as detached from religion, yet "in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I have ever known." He describes his Kenyan father as "raised a Muslim," but a "confirmed atheist" by the time his parents met, and his Indonesian stepfather as "a man who saw religion as not particularly useful." In the book, Obama explains how, through working with black churches as a community organizer while in his twenties, he came to understand "the power of the African American religious tradition to spur social change."<158> He has been a member of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ since 1988.<159>

78. aww the catbox getting smelly again?
Actually I have never been happier about how this nomination contest is going.

Obama has given Hillary a run for her money and she has shown herself to be resilient and managed to build a whole new voting coalition in the process.

I actually am very thankful for Obama's campaign.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. And Clinton is definitely stronger and more ready to win in the GE.

93. Just what coalition of voters
Has Clinton built up? We should be able to find them pretty easily.

Couldn't be the youth vote. She doesn't think they are worth going after.

Was it the progressives? Nope she tossed them under the bus.

Maybe it is the AA crowd? She and Bill made sure to lose them as well.

The college educated crowd? Nah, she all but spat in their Lattes.

How about those who live in Caucus states? Uh-uh. Those voters don't count.

Perhaps the voters in the other states that don't usually go Democratic? Fergetabbouit. They don't count either, Those are just states you fly over to get to the only states that count.

OH, I got it now. It is the voters in MI and FL. The same ones who she agreed didn't count until she needed them. That must be it. After all there aren't too many parts of the Democratic Party that she and Bill haven't tossed under the dualies.

73. You got everything right about Obama's cynical, dishonest politics
He spent 20 years tied to Wright, which is going to be seen as bad enough by itself.

Then he went all Schultz. 'I know nothing!'
Showing himself as the liar that many of us already knew he was about virtually everything.

Now he chucks his decades-long mentor and friend and book inspiration, pretending he never believed in any of it.
Showing himself again as a liar, and now additionally as someone with little character.

He's a grade-A phony and a panderer.

But the black community won't foreswear him for anything on this earth. You got that part wrong. They've been willing to lie through their hearts to make Bill and Hillary into racists. Obama knew that by calling the most AA-friendly President in American history, the only Democratic President in almost 30 years, a racist, even lying blatantly to do it, that he could get the African-American community to collectively turn on him in an instant and without a twinge of conscience. He was right.

Obama's problem is that he's shown his true colors. A repeatedly dishonest, pandering, backstabbing, say-anything character.
Hopefully Democrats will wake up before the end of this Primary.

The AA community's problem is that everyone is seeing how the black community will stab their friends in the back without so much as a second thought. That realization will last for generations.

80. I give the AA community more credit
In the GE, in a Clinton vs. McSame match-up, they will vote with their concience....

and there will be a split.

They are a community like any other - with folks on either side of the fence.

Once the euphoria around Obama settles, folks will be forced to make choices... and they will take the longer view.

86. Eh.
It's just a bit of fantasy on my part, but... if you're right about him still being an atheist or possibly an agnostic, I'd probably like the guy even more, even if he did make a public show of mentioning how he "praises Jesus" while privately not doing so, perhaps slowly separating himself from the Jesus-worship once he's actually in office. I'd forgive him that because I know that the moronic masses would never vote for an EEEVIL atheist and would probably have to be shown by example that atheists aren't horrible people. I'm no fan of religion and politics mixing and having someone who could at least see that point of view would be nice for a change.

92. you might like him more
And I might understand him a little better.

but that doesn't help him in the GE.

Both you and I know that.

It's about electability now.

He said it himself.

He also said that Wright is a political issue.

So it's fair game.

95. I'd rather someone attend church for political reasons than vote for a bogus WAR for polititcal ...
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 10:02 PM by gauguin57
...reasons, like Hillary did. She voted to OK the Iraq action because she was gonna run for president, plain and simple. And look at how many people -- both military and civilian -- are dead because of it. Look at how much the world hates us because of it.

Obama may have gone to church for political reasons, or he and Michelle may have wanted to find a church once they had a family. Or a bit of both. I know lots of minimal-believers who go to church mainly because they have kids and want that spiritual structure for them.
