1. He said what he wanted to say. If, like he said, it's not about him and Obama then he has nothing
else to say.

2. The first vote comes in for the "no comment" choice. Myself, honestly, I don't know which it is.

Please people, give us the reasons for your speculations. We all must be wondering about this right now.

4. I'll comment again, try to raise that comment to vote ratio: I think Wright will act however he t
thinks is best for TUCC.
I'm not suggesting he will be correct ;-)

7. Interesting. What he thinks best for the TUCC, if you're right, it might be closer to point 2

than anything else. Split the difference? I like doing the occasional poll, but I really want to see how this one turns out, since honestly, I'm not sure how it will pan out. If Wright roars back, Hillary WILL be the nominee. (Which I want.) Especially if he excoriates Obama on his "pod people" defense ("The man I saw yesterday was not the man I've known for these past twenty years.")

dragged through the blogosphere and cable news forest.
Then he let it all out at once.
Right after Pennsylvania.
It seemed so deliberate that I am not convinced he'd do an impromptu one on one...
Just thoughts....
Edit--so I'll stick with choice one for tonight.

5. He gave Obama a "real" reason to denounce him
(1) absolving Obama of any further responsibility for what he says and (2) removing himself as a weapon for the Hillary and McCain camps.

Mission accomplished.

8. Predictions are hard, especially about the future.
I'm less worried about Wright than I am about whether the media are going to keep treating this like the cuban missile crisis (you know, the one Dana Perino had never heard of).

I think Wright's a good person who (rightly) wanted to defend himself, but had no idea what he was walking into. The same people who clapped and cheered him at the press club yesterday then went back to their desks and wrote reports about what a terrible guy he is. Obama's put them on notice that he's not going to be associated with it any more; We'll see.

14. Just for fun, things I heard on MSNBC earlier, while they speculated about this very thing:
This "Pastor Disaster" could turn into a "Showdown"
Obama would be "taking a knife to a gun fight"

It was like reading a batman comic.

16. The whole country is hanging on his every word
Farrakhan may have a reptuation as an anti-Semite and a radical, but, everyone in the nation knows who he is. Sharpton is widely believed to have incited a race riot in New York two decades ago, everyone in the nation knows who he is, and he gets on talk shows, and if you think he is not paid for his services you are dreaming.

No one outside of Chicago knew who the hell Wright was before this, he was that unimportant, and his church was not important outside the purview of Chicago politics, where it was a very big factor. Wright was just another clergyman, a clergyman with a large flock, but in the end, the master of a megachurch. They're a dime a dozen. When they want to branch out, they have to do something spectacular. Rick Warren was lucky enough to have his book in a woman's house while she was being terrorized by a whacko. Hagee has his own television program and he regularly peddles books of nonsense throughout the South, in the aftermath of Rabin's assassination, he predicted that Peres would follow Rabin's lead and that before 2000, you'd have the antichrist in power. We saw how that turned out. Within a year, that book was worthless because Netanyahu won.

But basically, to go from being just a megachurch pastor to something big, you need something dramatic. This is Wright's shot, this is his only shot. From a business standpoint, he'd be foolish not to exploit it. If he plays his cards right, he'll be on every television network in the country, and if you don't believe that Wright could pull this off, when Jesse Jackson had a TV show on CNN, he once had David Duke on as a guest. Duke used to do a lot of television appearances, and there is a general belief that Duke saw in white racism a chance to make a hell of a lot of money, which is what he did.

This is Wright's shot at national fame and at a guaranteed income as a speaker who travels the country, television commentator, maybe even a panelist at a university. He'll take his shot I guarantee it.

17. Makes a lot of sense. And yes, Wright already WAS big in Chicago --
this may be the next step for him. In some ways, he may be thinking of the way Sharpton stole the mantle of AA leadership from Jesse Jackson some years ago, on the basis of nothing more than well-played hype. Al needs to watch his back!

27. I don't think Wright has said anything yet, has he? (So far Option 1 is operative, at least now.)
Does anyone have any info on Wright's location, plans, any up-coming appearances scheduled for him? We almost need a Wrightwatch thread in this crucial moment.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised he hasn't said anything yet. He must really be holed up right now -- every reporter out there must be DYING to get Wright's reaction to the Obama smackdown of yesterday.

Where's Rita Cosby when you need her?

30. You may be correct, I honestly have no idea which way he will go. The only thing is,
it seemed, even in the relatively sedate Bill Moyers thing, that Wright was already a little pissed-off by Obama's light scolding in the Philly speech. If that impression was correct, I have to expect at least a little that Wright now really feels hurt and wants to hit back hard.

34. Wrightwatch, Day 2: It's about 48 hours since Obama laid out his Tuesday Smackdown on Wright.
Edited on Thu May-01-08 01:52 PM by smalll
So far, Option 1 ("no comment") remains operative. Will it stay that way? I'm starting to lean to Option 3 winning out eventually --

Think how this has played out:
1) Wacky sermon snippets hit prime-time.
2) Obama gives the Philly speech, carefully putting some distance between himself and Wright.
3) Wright gets a little pissed - the "I'm a pastor, he's a politician" answer to Moyers - then throws caution to the winds in the NAACP/NPC parade of wackiness (black brains, white brains, bad Kennedy impressions, the AIDS-from-the-government thing, etc.)
4) Obama has no choice but to do the Tuesday Smackdown.

A fifth act seems necessary and likely, doesn't it? I can just see it now ... at another live-on-CNN event to another Wright-friendly crowd (there was a pro-Wright claque at the NPC)...

"Senator Obama said, he said: "The man I saw yesterday was not the man I've known for 20 years." (Then a beat or two on a Wright-style double-take) "Senator Obama sat in my pews for 20 years" (Preach it, brother!) "He came to Jesus through me." (Amen!) "I baptized him. I married him. I baptized his children. He was a DISCIPLE of mine!" (Tell it!) "When they asked him about me, he was silent. But when they asked him about me again, then again -- he DENIED me! By the time the cock crowed three times, he denied me! Oh Peter, faithless Peter! The disciple becomes the denier! I was his pastor. Him?" (Maybe a nice brush-the-dust-off-the-shoulder move at this point) "Just another politician." (The audience erupts into stormy applause.) "Render unto God that which is God's; render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's -- Barack forgets God, now that his sights are set on becoming this American Empire's next Caesar! But what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" (More stormy applause)
