There is a real danger that if something isn’t done, the American people may choose a president who has not been pre-approved by the powerful few who usually pick our presidents. The unenlightened masses might just put someone in charge who is not a card holding member of the establishment. Such a candidate could reach the White House without the express approval of the Supreme Court or the powerful elite of either party. This obviously would wreak havoc with the status quo and threaten a system that has worked so well for the select few it has been twisted to serve.
Unless the corporate media stand up and keep this upstart from being heard by the few who are no longer willing to be distracted, we could wind up a president who answers to all the people and not just the ones able to pay for his attention. We could have a leader who does not consider the will of the majority and inconvenient truth that must be ignored and deflected by the politics of fear. Young people might get the idea that they can control their own destiny by making democracy democratic again.
If this improbable champion of ordinary Americans defies the odds and gains the presidency, we will actually have to pitch in and help him. No more shopping our way to victory or numbing our brains with mindless television programming. It would mean that we might all have to become thinking, responsible citizens, unwilling to just let things happen in Washington. An inspirational leader would really cut into our couch time and might even drive us to serve our fellow man.
I won’t lose a lot of sleep worrying about this kind of polar shift in American politics. Dick Cheney would never let it happen.
