Watching Obama yesterday has made me appreciate the man even more
I saw a real, honest and good man struggling with the personal pain of having to take someone important to him to account.

All the CNN commentators, even the Republican ones, were highly respectful of Obama's situation. You could tell they all felt sympathetic to Obama's real pain over what is happening between him and his former reverend.

My heart broke for him as I saw how deeply betrayed he felt.

What can I say? I love the guy more than I ever did. He really tried to be respectful of Rev. Wright's views, even when they were off the wall.

This is the man I want for President and I am prouder than ever to say so.

1. I agree 100%. Obama is, at heart, a very decent man. There is no other way to look at it.

2. Why, because he will do and say anthing to further his political ambitions?
oh, I forgot, it's only Hillary who has blind political ambitions.

4. Hillary has nothing to do with the comment made about Obama
Why must you drag her into every discussion about him?

5. I saw him for what I have always thought he was: a political
opportunist. He sways with the political wind.

Nothing WRight said recently was different than what he has been saying. What was different yesterday? Obama saw that it was hurting him politically.

He has NO character. He is willing to sell his great advisor the "uncle" who had so much influence on him and his wife and child.

I saw a continuation of the behavior we have seen of Obama since he came onto the political landscape: voting "present" while holding his finger up to see which way the wind blows.

6. The Reverend Wright said Obama's word doesn't mean anything.

He personally and publicly dissed Obama and he is supposed to be Obama's friend?

That is not right.

8. I sure as shit hope Obama is a political opportunist
Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 08:47 AM by Armstead
The only people who aren't are not politicians.

IMO, Obama tried as hard as he could earlier to balance loyalty to Wright and his church with his need to contain the political damage. Rev. Wright then abused that, and basiocally rubbed Obama's nose in it publicly. That was -- as they say -- the straw that broke the camel's back and Obama did what he did for both personal and political reasons.

I suppose you think Hillary is not a political opportunist.

9. oh BS
Of course Obama gave Wright latitude to wise up (& STFU), as you would any associate you had respect for. But Wright didn't and obviously he now threatens the campaign. Sure Obama saw it was hurting him politically...so? Your point is...?

Obama had to formally denounce Wright and to his credit it's clear that it wasn't easy for him. We all have a tendency to hope things like this will right themselves short of having to sever all ties. But especially with people like you out there spinning it, it's clear that it was necessary to do it publicly.

I think this act was particularly hard for Obama because of his elevation of Wright as a sort of "uncle," as you term him. Men who lose their fathers (or fathers are absentee) often do this. It's natural to forgive those who behave like family to us for their bad behavior...unless they betray that sacred trust. Wright did clearly betray Obama and deserves the heave-ho. It's possible Wright is going through some mental/emotional changes we don't know about. It's hard to understand his destructive behavior.
