HRC's gas tax holiday: $0.18. Eighteen cents!!???
I live in Indiana, and our gas prices jumped eighteen cents this weekend. It means NOTHING.

In summer of 2000, Governor O'Bannon suspended a portion of the gas tax in Indiana for two months when gas prices hit $2 per gallon. The two month suspension cost the state nearly $30 million in revenues. Clinton's plan will cost at least 100 times that.

4. Why?
It would help if, after making a comment, you add some depth to back it up.

23. So does McCain! So do the oil companies. It let's them raise prices. Why, if you fill up
twice a week, you could get say 15 gallons x 2 times a week x .18 that's a whole $5.40 a week!

I'm jus so excited i don't think I can stand it. And when the oil CO. raise thier prices and get that money themselves, I will be so willing to sell my vote to either candidate so the oil co.s can make more money!!!!!

Think of it!

2. gas prices will go up until demand goes down.
That means that the $.18 cents the government doesn't collect will now be the $.18 cents the oil cos will charge to keep gas inventories from falling too low.

If people are interested in giving yet more money to the oil cos then so be it.

3. The oil companies and gas stations do NOT have to lower the prices by $0.18.
Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 08:37 AM by Pirate Smile
They can leave it where it is or drop it a few pennies and make a bigger profit instead of passing any savings onto the purchaser.

Plus the highway fund loses money and those funds provide hundreds of thousands of jobs (I heard 300,000) along with our roads and bridges sucking.

This is just ridiculous pandering. Treating people like they are idiots.

Edit to add - I'm relieved to hear that Indiana has had personal experience with this type of thing so they should be aware of the stupidity of this policy proposal.

8. And guess who's going to pay for Clinton's windfall profit tax on the oil companies?
Does she think that they will simply hang their heads and tell their stockholders that profits dropped? Oh, hell no! We'll be paying for it at the pump long before they pay their tax bill.

20. E-X-A-C-T-L-Y right
It'll be a cold day in hell before a station owner instantly drops his price $0.18 (or whatever) just because the tax goes away.

Her 18 pennies mean jack shit on a gas bill of $60.

Thank you, by the way, for quoting directly from Hillary's speech yesterday in Indianapolis.

7. A gas tax holiday would cost billions in losses; individuals would save maybe 30 bucks.
Obama pointed this out yesterday. It's a stupid gimmick that I hope NC voters don't buy into.

26. Less than that...about $3 per week.
If you drive 400 miles a week and your car gets 25 miles to the gallon, that's 16 gallons per week.

18 cents savings on each gallon gives you a grand total of $2.88.

That'd be about $12.35 monthly.

11. NW Indiana is one giant pothole as it is.
It's taken over a year to redo a small stretch of road in Portage. It's taken eight months to redo one corner of one block in Valparaiso. Indiana needs its revenue and there is *no* way they're going to get a windfall tax implemented soon enough for that to replace the loss from a tax holiday.

Gotta love the "convenience" of the 80/94 construction at I-65.

Absolutely! INDOT is seriously hurting already. If they take yet another hit, our roads won't be fit for mountain goats, God knows automobiles.

15. Half a tank? Not likely.
She's knocking off about 4% of the price of gas. You get half a tank for every 12 tankfuls.

Happy motoring!

Popsicles are lovely in summer... Thanks Hillary! :P

Oh wait, it wouldn't actually take effect THIS summer huh? So I have to wait until next summer? :(

*but if the overall savings all summer is $30, that would be half a tank, but if I save it, I can use it in the fall. I'm so confused.

16. Some basic economics for all that think this is good:
$0.18 cents would take the average price of gas down to around $3.35 (depending on where you live, here in Orlando it is $3.52). This price reduction would INCREASE consumption there by causing the gas to spike during the 3 month break. SO if gas spiked to about $3.44 what will happen to prices after the break; they go up potentiall higher to $3.70 or so.

In addition, the highway trust fund would lose in the 3 months $8-9 BILLION dollars and cost around 250,000 to 300,000 jobs. Hillary knows damn good and well that the senate will NEVER appprove a windfall tax. This is such a political scheme it is not even funny.

28. Maybe instead of stunts, HRC should consider doing things like...
removing tax breaks for the top 1% and using the money saved to do things like, say raising and extending unemployment benefits, or subsidizing mortgage refinances, forbearances and negotiations designed to prevent home foreclosures (make it so lenders have to pay a tax every time they foreclose on a home and repossess it, but they get a tax break if they do something like refinance the mortgage, lower the interest rate out of the stratosphere, let the homeowner have a forbearance, etc.) Maybe she could raise Social Security payments and give a hand-up to the elderly, disabled & such.

There are so many perfectly good ways to help people ride out this economic storm, but I guess they won't be considered because that would actually cost the rich motherfuckers that Bush and Hillary represent some money!
