This Post is in Support of Gay Rights.
C'mon DUers, forget the candidate warfare for a moment. We are lucky to have two candidates who believe strongly in gay rights (despite what their supporters may say on their behalf, from time-to-time).

Let's take a moment to celebrate our two candidates and stand with them on this issue.

I'm a Democrat and I support equal rights for gays and lesbians (and bisexuals and transgendered), and I'm glad our candidates do too!

Who's with me?

(A moment of unity in GD-P will not negate all existence. Trust me. ;))

17. If he did not say it
you would be disappointed that you would have to search for some other reason to hate her guts today. ALL IN THE NAME OF UNITY.

Gays should be able to marry and join the military. If not, they should not have to pay taxes.

McClurkin. In the end, I think we just all have to agree that our candidates' policy positions are more important than their surrogates' opinions.

16. This reply is not for 'gay rights'
It may seem like a small issue but I continue to harp on the fact that a much larger portion of the American electorate will support 'equal rights for gays' rather than 'gay rights'.

Gays don't want 'gay rights' they want the same rights everyone else has. People on the fence find it a lot easier to understand the issue as an issue of fairness for everyone rather than a special move for a special group - which it of course it isn't but seems like it when it is called 'gay rights'.

Equal rights for gays.

19. Thanks for your support!
But I'd like to point out that our candidates do not actually support equal rights. They support a 'separate but equal' sort of thing. Civil unions for us, marriage for the ruling group.

Kucinich and Gravel supported equal rights, and opposed the war and the Patriot Act and the Energy Bill. They were rejected out of hand, in favor of these two, who are better than the past candidates for gay issues, but still very far from supporting equal rights for GLBT peoples. There is a measurable difference between the positions of Kucinich and Gravel and Obama/Clinton. One could not say 'they all support equal rights' one could say 'they are all opposed to legal discrimination, but also opposed to actual equality'.
That difference does matter. In part because the Constitution already garantees equal protection under the law for all people. I already hold equal rights, the US government is refusing to honor the Constitution. That is the fact of the matter.

But thank you for you support and for voicing it. Our candidates are much better than past candidates and of course worlds ahead of McCain/Bush or any of the current GOP.

22. Yep. Thanks for pointing that out.
I actually hesitated on the wording there, but decided to go with simplicity. Though, in actuality, I agree that is a VERY important distinction.

We'll get there...eventually.

Just as we need to elect a black man to prove that doing so will not destroy the country, we need to have civil unions/gay marriage to prove that legalization of gay and lesbian partnerships will not destroy heterosexual marriage.

Quite the catch-22, no?

24. I, too, very much support equal rights for those of the GLBT community,
indeed, equal rights for ALL, no exclusions, exceptions. Being Canadian and having worked very hard for candidates here who supported equal rights for the GLBT community, I know each of us CAN make a difference in bringing about the changes needed to put in place those rights.
