If Obama having listened to Wright preach for 20 years
means that Obama MUST agree with all of Wright's beliefs, then it stands to reason that since Hillary has been with Bill for 40 years or so, then she MUST believe that being a serial adulterer is OK.

9. No. What he is saying is that he heard him preach for 20 years
and most of it isn't about racial divisions, or the U.S. government's role in terrorism, or the U.S. Government introducing AIDS into the black community.

17. BS --the pastors in the area have said (should have listened to KO that night)
that wright's rhetoric is well-known. sorry, your attempt to pretend that obama didn't know what wright was saying is pathetic.

you know, the first time I heard the priest in my church support the encyclicals on birth control, I left. it really is that simple--didn't take me 20 years to figure out what he was saying.

26. Of course controversial topics appear every now and then
but to pretend that they are the focus of the everyday goings on in the church is not realistic.

31. With all due respect, you have no idea what is and isn't BS.
Many infuential people have been and are members of the church. Are you suggesting they ALL embrace militant theology? I'm sure Oprah would be surprised to hear you say that.

11. Obama has not said it but I don't think he was a big deal church goer
In some of the interviews with him and his wife he says that Sundays were, I don't remember the exact wording, family days, or something to that effect. But it lead me to think, him the family were not always. at church on Sundays. But he just can't come out and say, well I didn't always go to church on Sunday. Although, to someone like me, saying such would not bother me.

21. They can go to church as a family. Then come home and do things as a family.
But I also think its unfortunate that America expects their politicians to:

A. Be religious even though we talk about the separation of church and state, so therefore ask them to check their religion at the door.
B. Go to church every Sunday and if they don't, suddenly try to label them as not religious enough.

13. well if listening to Wright gave Obama the perspective to stand up against the War then
why didn't Clinton denounce her pastor and find a new church for not being more strident against the war - unless she thinks that God likes this war.

39. Stick to the issues
Bill's infidelity is not the fault of Hillary...That is trash talk, lets be better than that.

How does this bullshit address Iraq? How does it address the failing economy and the falling value of the dollar? How does it address actual issues we face here in this country each and every day?

42. apparently Reverend Wright IS an issue
I'm just taking hillbot "logic" to it's ultimate conclusion. I never said Bill's cheating was her fault, just that if she's been exposed to his beliefs for 40 years, then she must agree with them, using the same argument that they have used against Obama/Wright.

28. How many Catholics disagree with the church?
Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 02:59 PM by BattyDem
My whole family is Catholic. They don't agree with the church on issues like divorce, birth control, abortion and homosexuality. Millions of Catholics disagree with the church's position on at least some of those issues. Should everyone leave the church?

For years, the church hierarchy covered up sex abuse by priests. Is every Catholic responsible for that? Even after the abuse and the cover-up became common knowledge, Catholics continue to go to church. Are they bad people? Should they all be held responsible for the abuse?

So ... why is Barack Obama expected to answer for everything Jeremiah Wright has ever said or done? Why is it presumed that Obama agrees 100% with church doctrine and/or the views of the pastor? I don't know anyone who agrees with their church 100% of the time ... do you? Why is his church being portrayed as being full of hate, when it has done wonderful work in the community? Are all the parishioners of that church "unAmerican" or is it just Obama?

RW pastors have been saying outrageous and offensive things for years, yet no one has a problem with members of the GOP associating with them or attending their churches. John McCain has been endorsed by John Hagee, yet McCain is not being grilled about his beliefs. He's not forced to answer for every horrible thing Hagee has ever said.

Why?

35. THANK YOU...
that is exactly the point. My mother is a devout Catholic but she believes supports gay marriage and abortion rights. She once walked out of church when the priest gave a sermon about the evils of homosexuality, but SHE STILL IS STILL A MEMBER OF THAT CHURCH. That same priest baptized her children, but that doesn't mean they are best buddies. She goes to church to attend Mass not to worship the priest.
