Hillary Wants a Gas Tax Vaction Obama Wants None...Math

......Time.....

Hillary and Gramps McInsane want to give you and I a vacation from paying the federal gas tax and Obama says NO WAY...listening to David Schuster subbing in for Ed Schultz today he did the math.....so I will use my situation and you see if it is really a vation or merely a FLUFF VOTING ISSUE.

I will be using about 18 gallons of gas each week for two cars for the twelve week summer season....the federal tax is eighteen cents a gallon.

......18x18 =$3.24 each week x 12 week = about $39.00.......Obama has stated that this would short the Federal Highway fund by about 9 billion dollars and create an situation where workers could lose their jobs.

What can you really do with 40 bucks Huh!!!

Again another Hillary Fluff Issue.

1. On-Line "Gas Tax Holiday" Calculator
I posted this here : http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5757604

please recc that thread:

John McCain and Hillary Clinton have suggested suspending Federal Taxes on all Gasoline/Diesel sold between Memorial Day (5/26) and Labor Day (9/1) this year.

According to state highway officials and this http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/29/us/politics/29campaign.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&oref=slogin">article in the New York Times, this "Gas Tax Holiday" will lower tax revenue by roughly $9 billion and potentially cost 300,000 highway construction jobs. The highway trust fund that the gas tax finances provides money to states and local governments to pay for http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/transportation/4219981.html">road and bridge construction, repair and maintenance.

I created an online javascript calculator to show you how much you stand to save if this pander-fest is actually enacted:

8. I'd save $28.82
Between 5/26 and 9/1 you will drive 3750 miles. At 38 miles per gallon, you will burn 98.7 gallons of Diesel.

Your Total Tax Relief would be $28.82

Well, probably 1/2 that since my work pays for 1/2 my fuel usage.

5. Thomas Friedman on the subject ...
I don't always agree with what he has to say, but he hits the nail on the head here.

Dumb as We Wanna Be

By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
Published: April 30, 2008

It is great to see that we finally have some national unity on energy policy. Unfortunately, the unifying idea is so ridiculous, so unworthy of the people aspiring to lead our nation, it takes your breath away. Hillary Clinton has decided to line up with John McCain in pushing to suspend the federal excise tax on gasoline, 18.4 cents a gallon, for this summer’s travel season. This is not an energy policy. This is money laundering: we borrow money from China and ship it to Saudi Arabia and take a little cut for ourselves as it goes through our gas tanks. What a way to build our country.

When the summer is over, we will have increased our debt to China, increased our transfer of wealth to Saudi Arabia and increased our contribution to global warming for our kids to inherit.

...

The McCain-Clinton gas holiday proposal is a perfect example of what energy expert Peter Schwartz of Global Business Network describes as the true American energy policy today: “Maximize demand, minimize supply and buy the rest from the people who hate us the most.”

Good for Barack Obama for resisting this shameful pandering.

6. Although...
She has said that the gas-tax 'vacation' would only occur when a windfall profit tax was levied against oil companies -- this is where the difference would be made up.

Obama also supports a windfall profits tax.

I am opposed to the 'gas-tax holiday' idea. But there is a difference between her proposal and mcbush's.

7. Yeah there is - at least McCain is not promising something
he can't deliver.

There is no way Hillary would get a bill to the Senate and across Bush's veto-desk before Labor day, let alone Memorial Day.

She should just promise to wash everyone's car too while she's at it.
