GD:Pers - Listen up, literally! What music made you smile today?
If you're like me, this primary has consumed every waking ( and sometimes, sleeping) minute for the last four months. I know that for a fact because this place is beyond intense. When Reverend Wright brought up the differences in music between races in his lecture, Monday, It got me thinking. I thought, if I can get GD:Pers to relax for just five minutes a day, it might be less of a cauldron. So take a deep breath and post what piece of music made you happy, today? The purpose here is not to criticize musical preferences but, simply, to see if we can put aside our differences and bond for a short time. I know this: we'll need to come together after this thing is settled, no matter who wins it. It's our only chance of winning this deal. You may say, take this to the DU lounge, but to be honest GD:P is the only site that I've posted at. Hey, this post may go over like a lead balloon ( that's what Pete Townsend said to Jimmy Page about Zeppelins chances-hence,their name) but I might burn a thread every day if I get a smile. By the way, it was The Beatles Revolver that did it for me, today.

1. This little tune.
This song has got stuck on me. It's not what I usually listen to, it is the recurring guitar lick that gets me smiling.

16. Sorry, Condem.
I will say this about that record - I've heard most of it, and it's a pretty clever cop of the later Beatles records, what with the orchestration and such.

Just that song grates for some reason.

Probably why I like it.

107. I'll always remember Baez as a coed at BU-Love her voice- but BLACKFOOT Train Train was today's tune
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMclpOK7a2w

Train,Train by Blackfoot (1971 to 1997- this is a great harmonica)

Oh, here it comes

Well, train, train, take me on out of this town
Train, train, Lord, take me on out of this town
Well, that woman I'm in love with, Lord, she's Memphis bound

Well, leavin' here, I'm just a raggedy hobo
Lord, I'm leaving here, I'm just a raggedy hobo
Well, that woman I'm in love with, Lord, she's got to go

Well, goodbye pretty mama, get yourself a money man
Goodbye, pretty mama, Lord, get yourself a money man
You take that midnight train to Memphis
Lord, leave me if you can
Oh, take that midnight train to Memphis
Lord, leave me if you can
Oh, take that train, baby

Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 08:35 PM by americanstranger
http://www.radioparadise.com/content.php?name=songinfo&song_id=39554

The peeps at Radio Paradise trashed it, but I'm a guitar player and I know good playing when I hear it.

This was good.

Some other good stuff they played today:

The Derek Trucks Band - This Sky
Morphine - A Head With Wings
Michael Franti and Spearhead - Time to Go Home
Porcupine Tree - Sentimental
Ripley Caine - Hey Mister
Stars - Look Up

If you never treated yourself, check out the station: http://www.radioparadise.com/

Most eclectic, like the 'free-form' FM radio programming of the early 70s. And 30-minute blocks of music to boot. Good stuff.

35. A friend of mine and I were talking about them the other day.
They were great - but they had a rep in the industry of 'hawking' demos and covering them and having hits.

A friend's brother's band was signed to Columbia at the time 3DN was big, and they were slated to cover 'Easy To Be Hard' (from 'Hair') and release it as a lead single before their album - 3DN beat them to the punch by three weeks and had a smash with it.

I think most of it was jealousy that they covered other people's tunes better than most other bands around at the time.

45. Oh, Lord! Do I remember them. "Don't talk back!!"
Rock and Roll was really fun and often goofy in those days, before the English took it another way.

I was glad to go on that trip, too, but those happy songs of the late 50s and early 60s still have a warm place in my heart. I don't know how our parents put up with the kids singing those songs over and over and over.

"It was a one eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater ...."

according to what I've read on youtube. Check the link I posted:

and you'll see that apparently it was a recording from a gig in Ohio at a college--don't know that it was ever properly released or if this is a bootleg. Frankly, I'd never heard it until recently when I was checking out youtube for music.

A wonderful music. Having the harmonica should add more dimension.

In 1980, we stayed to the very last credit of the movie "Ordinary People" so that I could prove to my spouse that the song "seasons" (I think) was the Canon.

159. Sufjan Stevens is one of my favorites,

He made that concept album about Illinois a few years too early.
Yet, it's still vaguely meaningful

Songs like The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts

The first two lines of Jacksonville;

I'm not afraid of the black man running
He's got it right, he's got a better life coming

Which I'm sure is about runaway slaves and not Obama running for president, but it sounded that way when that came on my stereo today.

Yeah---Johnny Cash. You know there's that commercial with the "I've Been Everywhere, Man" song. Every time I hear it I smile. I'm not a big C&W fan, but I do have some favorites in the genre and he's one of them.

The fact that Cash even attempted to cover NIN floors me. that he pulled it off floors me even harder.

Rubin is producing the new Metallica record, BTW. That oughta be interesting.

That's Rubin's unique talent.
He gave Cash songs that you'd never expect him to touch, and he knocked them out of the park.

He covered Soundgarden's 'Rusty Chains' on that record. Chris Cornell says it's his favorite SG recording.

And speaking of Soundgarden - ever hear Cornell cover Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean?' Wild.

Pretty amazing.

There's a version of him doing it with a band (it was on his last album), and I also heard an acoustic version from a show in Amsterdam.

Find it if you like Cornell.

Oh! Another Cornell rarity is him with the LA band Eleven doing 'Ave Maria.' That is chilling, and worth finding.

But every track on that album is real good.

120. My son's recent concert got reviewed "Music Connection." They called him a 15-year-old phenom!
My little boy! SO proud, I am! They called him "captivating" and "a particular stand-out"!

"Music Connection" is a pretty cool and well-regarded magazine. I got comments on it from people I haven't heard from for ages - who'd never responded to anything about him before!

I am OVER. THE. MOON. Somehow, everything just kinda seems okay at the moment, and yes, I cannot stop smiling.

Plus, I turned another bunch of new friends onto his Myspace (where two of his songs can be heard):

Enjoy!

 :bounce: :applause: :toast: :woohoo: :headbang:  :yourock: ACIDIC and Feisty Piranhas!

PS: - PLEEEZE forgive me for gushing. I'm sorry if it seems obnoxious (if you think so, you're probably spot-on!) and I'll try to just confine it to here (but I did want to share it with my beloved brothers and sisters here at DU). This has just been a really great week, busy as hell, but really upbeat as far as his little rock 'n' roll thing is going.

Mozart's Sonata in A, K 331 3rd movement, "Rondo alla Turca". Oh, and Vivaldi's Concerto No. 1 in E major, Op. 8, RV 269, better known as "Spring", or in the original Italian, "La Primavera".

You kids today and your vernacular music... I'll never understand your attraction to it.

That I don't listen to popular music of any sort. Especially coming out of the mouth of a 26 year old woman, it seems to be psychically jarring to just about everyone.

Oh, sure, once upon a time I listened to Nirvana, Sublime, the Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, and other assorted 90s bands, but I've since decided that caring about modern music is a waste of time. On the rare occasions that I listen to the radio (usually in the car), I listen to NPR or the local wingnuts on the radio (know thy enemy, I always say). I guess my predilection for classical art music is quite unusual, and a bit off-putting to most of my peers.

189. The best possible revolver to point to your head is the Beatles' REVOLVER
and you did that today so no wonder you're a class act.

We threw on every CD we could find, moving through the Rach 3 to Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey" to the Holst Folk Song Suites in E-flat and F, then on to Joni Mitchell doing "The Last Time I Saw Richard," and Judy Collins' near-madrigal-like recording of Leonard Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy," a decision inspired by JeffR here on DU, then Duke Ellington (American's greatest composer).

Great post. Great post. And did I mention I think it was a great post?

I used to have it on vinyl and heard about the 'butcher' cover. I took my copy, held it over a steaming tea kettle and soon found out that they'd pasted the 'safe' cover over the 'butcher' edition! Peeled off the overlay, and voila!!

Instant collector's item! Great music, too. :)

and then I see myself namechecked in it.

I should have gone to bed an hour ago, but I'll just say one thing about Revolver, other than that it's a fantastic album. McCartney said somewhere that the first time he listened to a final pressing, he was convinced the entire album was out of tune, and he had to be reassured by many people that that wasn't the case. He hadn't dropped acid yet at that point, unlike Harrison and Lennon, but maybe a steady diet of uppers and pot clouded his judgment. Maybe that explains his second marriage, too, come to think of it. And "Silly Love Songs".

Back in my varsity days, I was at a strip club, quite drunk, and a very young, pretty woman disrobed to "Tupelo Honey". It brought me to tears for her sake, for mine, and for God knows what else.

And I don't disagree about Ellington, but he just barely edges out Gershwin and Samuel Barber for me. If you ever want to annoy the neighbors, try Barber's Symphony in One Movement. Tape your windows and crank that mother up. It slays.

on edit: should have gone to bed an hour and 10 minutes ago...

206. Hi, JeffR. Out of tune? REVOLVER? Well, he must have heard it in some
different way than the rest of the world did. A good deal of us thought it struck the right chord, struck the nerves that needed striking. Pete Townshend said that some of McCartney's compositions were "gauche," a word you didn't run across very often in the early editions of THE SOHO NEWS or ROLLING STONE.

"Silly Love Songs" is kind of like one of those marshmallow bunnies grown-ups put in little kids' Easter baskets and which the little kids in turn ignore summarily to rip thru the fake green grass to get to the chocolate. My theory is his wife was ill and wrote the song and he put his brand on it to give it heft. It didn't work. There are high schoolers who can out-write that tune, and it may be that I need to titrate my dose of lysergic acid to understand how the same person who wrote that song also wrote "Eleanor Rigby."

Have to agree on Barber -- (I rate "Adagio for Strings" pretty high) -- he gets top honors in composition in most circles but Gershwin & Duke know where my psyche hangs out, plus, they're often up after hours. Although I've not been to that bar where that woman picked "Tupelo Honey" for a strip soundtrack. Has to be a first, that one. And an impressive one at that.

But then I was always at the wrong bar. JeffR, good god, but I'm thinking you should be doing some book-writing if you aren't already. I'd buy a copy, to be sure.

A hug & a hallelujah your way.

I'll use that description because one cocktail waitress I know in Las Vegas never lets me hear the end of it. "See that guy?" she'll say to a friend during work, "He's not a song person." Then they chuckle like hell. I said it one time while semi-drunk at the nearby bar a few years ago, and now I can't shake it, at least in that casino.

Never found music the least bit interesting or valuable. I'm probably the only kid who preferred talk radio to music beginning at about age 7 and throughout school. My next album will be my first. I have heard of the Beatles.

Come to think of it, the one song I do appreciate is Saturday: My Old Kentucky Home at Churchill Downs.

Two minutes of music per year is plenty. Oh, I guess some Christmas stuff is nice.

Today I smiled when I holed a bunker shot. :)

207. Let me toss in "Boulder to Birmingham" by Emmylou Harris.
Not bad at all if you want your heart ripped from your chest.

Here's the chorus, people:

"I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my mind in his saving grace
I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see... if I could see your face."

On the question of musical deliverance, Emmylou Harris gets it done.

211. Yes. Bonnie Raitt could record the Doublemint Gum theme and I'd buy 6 copies.

213. You never can tell
by Chuck Berry
"Ce'st La Vie say the old folks. Goes to show you never can tell."

I'm holding out hope.

"Growin' Up" by Bruce Springsteen

Sort of a theme song.

"When they said sit down I stood up." It defines me from the toddler years on.

A cool convertible or an SUV.
Too bad I didn't know my credit was whack, cause now I'm driving off the lot in a used sub-compact.
F-R-E-E that spells freeee credit report dot com baby, saw their ad on my TV, thought about checking but was too lazy.
Now instead of looking fly and rolling fat, my legs are sticking to the vinyl and my posse's getting laughed at.
