Senator Hillary Clinton, An American Hero

by Dr. Carolyn

February 8th, 2008 @ 9:38 pm

The following is an open letter to Senator Hillary Clinton, a woman who I consider an American Hero. I composed this letter with the hope that it might help undecided voters reach a decision. As outlined in the letter, I am Canadian and, therefore, have no personal gain from supporting Senator Clinton in the primaries in America. But, readers will note that meeting Senator Clinton at Ground Zero provided me with much comfort during a terrifying time.

I hope that all who read this letter will give it thought as you decide who you will support in this election:

Dear Senator Clinton:

I have been watching the primaries with great interest and am writing this letter in hopes that it might help your campaign. To introduce myself, I am a Canadian physician who has no voting ability when it comes to American elections. I have absolutely nothing to gain by testifying about your natural ability to lead the U.S. out of darkness.

I met you at Ground Zero on September 12th, 2001. In fact, my medical team of five Canadians literally bumped into you in our haste to make it to Stuyvesant High School where the casualties of the WTC terrorist attacks were accumulating. When I caught my balance amidst the crowd of people, I realized that it was you standing in front of me. I will never forget that moment. You were very composed with only a single secret service agent beside you, completely camouflaged as an ordinary citizen. When my group realized who you were, we stood still. I was speechless and already overwhelmed by the chaos around us. The only words that I could manage to form were: _We are Canadians. We came from Canada to help.

You shook each of our hands and thanked us. The momentum and courage that your simple gesture gave us was very much appreciated.

When I reflect on that week, a flood of memories returns to me. First, unlike any other of your political colleagues at the time, you were walking about, without any lights or cameras, reassuring the people that you represent that you were there to help. You were vulnerable, ready and willing to have anyone approach you in person _ unlike President Bush.

In fact, because the current president is so afraid of getting assassinated _ that is what the police told us on September 15th, 2001 - the medical triage had to shut down for _security reasons_ in preparation for his arrival on Friday, and might I add three whole days after the attacks. At the time, our triage was taking care of between 50 to 70 patients an hour. We had over 200 medical volunteers working around the clock to help. As far as we know, all of our patients were injured volunteers. We would patch up whomever we could and help them get back to the fevered search for potential life.

The stories of injured fire fighters and other rescue workers obsessed about getting stitched up, or having their eyes flushed from the acidic smoke, as quickly as possible in order to continue looking for a loved one, are too numerous to recount. However, when President Bush came to Ground Zero, the Triage was closed down and we all were forced home.

Six years later, you helped me again - though this time not in person. Somehow, I still remain ashamed that I ever got sick after helping. My lungs have never been the same as when I crossed the finish line at the Ironman Canada ultra distance triathlon on August 26th. 2001. Because of you, Senator Clinton, thousands of WTC volunteers have free medical care for their rescue related illnesses. I was absolutely astonished when American volunteers that I still keep in touch with told me that I could also get help despite being a Canadian. To be honest, I refused any assistance for several years. For one, I am not bitter and choose not to define my life by September 11th. Even if I knew that I would get as sick as I have, I would help again. My quality of life compared to many of the great people that I met during that dark week six years ago is actually pretty awesome. I remain grateful for what I have and not bitter about what I do not.

Regardless, from the moment that I met you in person, and from the many moments I have been grateful for your continuing to stand up for the thousands who later became sick and injured from Ground Zero, I have thought of you as a true hero.

California may have the “Terminator,” America has you.

In closing, although the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan make me sick with despair, after what you saw first hand on September 11th, 2001, I don’t blame you for taking the greatest measure available at the time to keep America safe. You did the best you could, with what you had, at the time.

Senator Obama, or any of your rivals for that matter, were never at Ground Zero. How can they truly second-guess your decision?

I look forward to cheering for you all the way to the finish line - when you are sworn in officially as President of the United States.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carolyn, BA, MD, CCFP, FRCPC(EM)

And sometimes heroes know that it is better for the whole to put their own desires to the side lest they destroy those around them.
I think if Hillary wants to complete her heroism, it is long past time to step aside and help begin the healing that will be sorely needed to lead us to victory in November. As she continues her lust for power the only person who gains from it is John McCain.

But nice try at a strawman there.
I was questioning _your_ claim that she had worked closely with Senator Clinton - and as a consequence was able to assess her as being an "American Hero".

When all I can tell from the letter is that she met her once - briefly.

87. When you stop ceaselessly attacking and insulting so many on this board
then maybe folks will listen and show some respect, love how you demand it but I'll be damned if in hundreds of posts by you there has been a single hint of respect.. Calling ME a LEECH because I'm too broke to donate at this time when I've been here since the beggining of this site, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and appeared on many right wing shows like Scarborough twice, Lou Dobbs, and O'Rielly and ALWAYS did a shout out for the DU..

Blinded by you worship you've done nothing but drive by posting to only inflame people and now YOU Demand Respect..

Try Earning it. From everyone here, not just your peeps..

Us old timers still consider this a Place where ALL Democrats have been welcomed and many of us have literally changed the course of the War among other things...

Try not to drop a bomb on this street and you might get Respect.

Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 08:49 PM by crimsonblue
Prepare to flame on, but how does walking around a disaster zone make one a hero? Shaking hands is heroic? I dunno... I just don't see it. None of the leaders that walked around the site were heroes. The real heroes were the firefighters that rushed into the second building after the first collapsed. The real heroes were the men and women that clawed feverishly at the rubble soon after the towers were gone. I will never forget those heroes. To paint any politician that walked around the site as a hero dimishes the actions of the true heroes that day.

edit: changed 'mean' to 'men'. my bad

If you think anything at ground zero was well organized, then you are crazy. It was the ordinary people, people like my dad (a doctor who was in Mass. at the time and drove to NYC to volunteer) that were the heroes. I don't want to hear your shit about how she is a hero because that, my friend, is a lie.

Using it on this thread shows a profound ignorance and a stunning disconnect from the efforts at comity from your own candidate. You disgrace the Obama campaign with your divisive efforts. And, don't think you can justify that by anything Hillary Clinton has done. You are responsible for your own behavior.

124. As has been pointed out to you,
Dr Carolyn is ignorant. This has nothing to do with being an accomplished physician or a dedicated resuce worker. As most people, there are things Dr Carolyn is great at, and things Dr Carolyn is not competent in. Understanding geopolitics and wars of agression is certainly among the latter.

I will defer to Dr Carolyn's praise of another physician's accomplishments. But Dr Carolyn's praise of Hillary's vote for war is based in complete ignorance (and that's being kind, because the alternative is much worse). Dr Carolyn doesn't understand the first thing about the reasons for the Iraq war, and seems to have swallowed the propaganda hook, line, sinker, fishing rod, angler and boat. She, of course, is not alone in that predicament.

There's a term for people like that, originating in Soviet Russia, I believe. It begins with "useful". Dr Carolyn and people who agree with her have certainly been useful to the Bush war machine, and are now as useful to Hillary.

62. Unfortunately Hillary does choose to define the world by 9/11.
I think she was deeply effected by what happened. Its why she voted for the Iraq War and why she's so hawkish about Iran. She was traumatized by being in New York at the time and she views all foreign policy through that lens. Its one reason why she should never be the person who answers the phone at 3am.

122. Demean? So Dr Carolyn somehow above reproach
because he (or she?) is a physician and/or met Hillary at Ground Zero? Look:

1. In closing, although the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan make me sick with despair, after what you saw first hand on September 11th, 2001, I don’t blame you for taking the greatest measure available at the time to keep America safe. You did the best you could, with what you had, at the time.

Dr Carolyn is deluded. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq did not "keep America safe". They were billed as such, and Dr Carolyn appears to have bought into that propaganda. The intended purpose of both wars had nothing to do with the safety of anyone outside of the White House, and the actual result needs no comment.

Dr Carolyn is also ignorant. Voting in favor of the IWR was not "the best you could (do) with what you had, at the time". PLease understand that it was not. It's been said over and over: even if you had only watched CNN, you'd still have caught Mohamed ElBaradei, Scott Ritter and Hans BLix telling the truth about Iraq's WMD. Without going to any alternative news, and certainly without privileged access to intelligence information. Dr Carolyn may not have watched CNN, or may not have cared, but she is mistaken and she is ignorant. No matter how fantastic a physician she is, she is not qualified to speak about geopolitics and war until she informs herself a little more.

This struck me. What's with the genuflecting to power? Courage, because there was only one agent to protect HRC in the midst of hundreds of patriotic American citizens whose only purpose at the time was to help other people stay alive? If nothing else, I was going to post about this, because I cannot understand this groveling to authority, as if Hillary were there on a mission from God. I'm very serious here. You can't question elected officials or hold them accountable if you start off prostrated in the dirt. I just do not understand this mindset of people who need a leader to look up to. (That's a heavy conservative/right-wing trait, mind, though I'm sure not exclusively so.)

3. California may have the “Terminator,” America has you.

I have to ask again: is this for real? Is Dr Carolyn comparing HRC to Arnold (what a concept, now!), or is he/she again genuflecting to a familiar American icon? How weird to even mention Schwarzenegger in this context! It may be a throw-away comment, does not affect the gist of the letter, but it reveals something about Dr Carolyn's thought processes: Terminator = GOOD. Maybe Dr Carolyn would do better to watch fewer movies and more actual news. Even the rotten CNN would do for a start.

A woman who helped consign millions to their death in Iraq, a hero? A woman who supported NAFTA a hero? A woman who is rattling the saber at Iran, threatening nuclear nightmare diplomacy a hero? Stunning display of partisanship there.

Real heroes are those who do things for no personal gain. Every single thing that Hillary has done in her political and legal career has been with the view of maximizing her own, or Bill's personal gain.

Hillary is no hero, she is simply another corporate and political whore, selling herself out to the highest bidder, whether it be WalMart or Faux news. She has no principles except furthering her own career, and she is certainly no hero.

Geez, and they talk about the cult like mentality of Obama supporters:crazy:
