3. Actually, you know, it doesn't grab me.

I agree with the message, of course, but as a cartoon I think it sorta falls flat.

First, it's not really a cartoon. It's just an argument and a counterargument, with figures drawn around it to resemble a cartoon. But that's become a hallmark of the cartoonist running low on ideas nowadays, so I'll let it slide. At least it isn't a person watching TV on a chair. But I digress.

The primary distinguishing feature of the talking heads (other than being disembodied heads on a cement block, of course) is their measured, indirect, circumlocutious manner of speaking, punctuated with effete mutterings of "quite, quite." Their noses are upturned. Their speech looks pompous, arrogant, and overinflated.

And how does Mr. Obama respond? With a measured, overinflated, lengthy response. There’s no break here; no disconnect. Rather than a snappy comeback, Obama just kinda rambles a bit, just like the talking heads did. It’s like they’re in some alternate universe where everyone talks like a 18th-century political cartoon.

And that brings me to another problem with the punchline: it ain’t a punchline. “On the Contrary, it seems to me that an un-hurried, careful, measured, well-considered reply, properly phrased and delivered, is exactly what we need in a President!” is not a punchline, it’s a punch-thesis. Brevity is the soul of wit, as they say, and without wit a cartoon is pointless.

FUNNY:

A. “Who was that lady I saw you with last night?”
B. “That was no lady; that was my wife!”

POINTLESS:

A: “Who was that lady I saw you with last night?”
B: “Actually, I would hardly deign to call the person with whom I spent the previous evening a ‘lady.’ For, you see, I am bound to that person in lawful matrimony, and I find her conduct to be generally unbecoming of the title of ladyship!’

8. I find your critique of the cartoon to be measured, un-hurried, careful, properly phrased
and well-delivered.

11. Hmmm, to me the most powerful toons are those that aren't funny
ones like these:

Based on your criteria, these, too, would merit a FAIL from you, interesting.

12. "punctuated with effete mutterings of "quite, quite." "
I think that was the point. I think that the toon spoke to the idiocy of the entire "Obama is an elite" meme as well as Buchanan's meme of "Obama as faculty lounge". I've even heard the word "effete" used against Obama.

I think that this toon is brilliant because it speaks to all of these memes--of course including the fact that no matter what Obama did regarding Wright he would be lambasted--in one fell swoop, showing them all to be idiotic.

7. Oliphant is the best by far.
He's an equal opportunity offender but he's on the mark with that cartoon.

22. "truly dodging sniper fire?" Really?
When did someone shoot at him?

Perhaps you mean metaphorically rather than truly ... and I'd say even that's a real stretch.
