Republican John McCain and Democrat Hillary Clinton have come together on a new proposal to reduce US troop casualties in Iraq. Noting the recent spike in such casualties, and building on their surprising agreement on a short term "fix" to high gas prices, the Senator from Arizona and his counterpart from New York are calling for a three month "Iraq War Casualty Holiday." Under this proposal, soldiers and their families will be given some short term relief from death, maiming and grief, by requiring that, over the summer, all US troops in Iraq be required to stay indoors, preferably in underground bunkers. At the end of the summer, the troops will come back out and resume their mission, although McCain and Clinton claim that by that point the risk to the soldiers will have dissipated.
McCain and Clinton acknowledged criticism that their approach would leave the field clear for insurgents to make mischief. McCain had no response to that claim other than to suggest that repeating the summer holiday approach for the next 100 years would inevitably bring triumph. Clinton, however, took a somewhat different approach -- she is proposing that any uptick in insurgent action be addressed by imposing a tax on the insurgents.
Senator Barack Obama, asked to comment on the proposal, commented that "Those white folks are crazy" and suggested a better approach might be to get the troops out of Iraq and keep them out.
In a related development, the American voting public is very upset with Paula Abdul.
