So now the press tells candidates when to quit?

by Eric Boehlert

History continues to unfold on many levels as the protracted Democratic Party primary race marches on, featuring the first woman and the first African-American with a real shot at winning the White House.

Here's another first: the press's unique push to get a competitive White House hopeful to drop out of the race. It's unprecedented.

Looking back through modern U.S. campaigns, there's simply no media model for so many members of the press to try to drive a competitive candidate from the field while the primary season is still unfolding.

Until this election cycle, journalists simply did not consider it to be their job to tell a contender when he or she should stop campaigning. That was always dictated by how much money the campaign still had in the bank, how many votes the candidate was still getting, and what very senior members of the candidate's own party were advising.

In this case, Howard Dean, the head of the Democratic National Committee, said he was "dumbfounded" by public demands for Clinton to drop out last month. (He now wants one of the candidates to quit after the final June 3 primary.) Yet lots of pundits have suggested that in a neck-and-neck campaign in which neither candidate will likely secure the nomination based on pledged delegates, Sen. Hillary Clinton must drop out before all the states have had a chance to vote.

I realize the political debate surrounding the extended Democratic campaign remains a hot one, with people holding passionate opinions about the delegate math involved and what the consequences for the Democratic Party could be. I'm not weighing in on that debate. I'm focusing on how journalists have behaved during this campaign.

And the fact is, the media's get-out-now push is unparalleled. Strong second-place candidates such as Ronald Reagan (1976), Ted Kennedy, Gary Hart, Jesse Jackson, and Jerry Brown, all of whom campaigned through the entire primary season, and most of whom took their fights all the way to their party's nominating conventions, were never tagged by the press and told to go home.

"Clinton is being held to a different standard than virtually any other candidate in history," wrote Steven Stark in the Boston Phoenix. "When Clinton is simply doing what everyone else has always done, she's constantly attacked as an obsessed and crazed egomaniac, bent on self-aggrandizement at the expense of her party."

Clinton officially declared her candidacy for president of the United States on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, a few months after easily winning re-election to the Senate. "I'm in. 25. I think Chelsea has shown her true Clinton colors, and it ain't pretty....
...Perhaps one of the most disapopointing things of the Clinton campaign is to see that Chelsea appears to be as berift of ethics and honesty as are her parents.

She flat out lied when she agreed with her mother about the "sniper fire." She puts herself out on the campaign trail, and then plays coy wittle girl about her father's using the White House for his sexual liasons.

I thought the world of Chelsea before, but not now.

...Every moment that went by when Chelsea backed up her Mom in the lie....Chelsea herself lied.

I raised my daughter with better ethics than that. I'm sure you raised your kids better than that, too.

I think the Clintons must be tainted right down to the DNA. Chelsea never had a chance, really, not being raised by those two.

Bully for your and your daughter... happy to say you and she aren't in this situation... leave my kids out of this. And unless you have some proof to back up your allegations, you are the one who is appearing to be sans ethics.

What in the name of Goddess is wrong with a child NOT discussing a deeply personal issue between her parents? I think she handled that particular issue perfectly, and if I were in Hillary's position, I would be very proud of my daughter for handling it in that manner.

51. If Chelsea had corrected her Mom's sniper story, the press would have been all over it....
...Again, Chelsea ain't Baby Jesus. She's not even a BABY. She's certainly not a "child."

She is on the campaign trail so she should be able to function as an adult.

Bill Clinton repeatedly having affair with women, before and during his stint n the White House, impacted all of us.

When he was under investigtion for Paula Jones, he started his affair with Lewinsky, a freaking White House INTERN...in the WHITE HOUSE. He got blow-jobs from her in the White House, feet from the Oval Office.

Because he put the best inerests of his dick ahead of the best interests of his country, our national agenda was sidetracked for years. We all suffered through that.

It was NOT a "personal issue" between her parents--not when Bill Clinton dragged the whole country into it, and not when Hillary, now running for president, paid off Paula Jones with her own investment funds. Bill Clinton never had to pay a DIME.

These issues are germaine to Hillary's candidacy and especially her claim to be ready on Day #1. Ready to do what? Pay off Bill's next blow-job queen? Ready to ignore an explosive situation so that it turns into a national problem?

91. Again with the personal attacks. You asked for background on Hillary/lesbian issue...
...and I provided you the name of her alleged current Muslim lesbian partner. There is quite a bit written about those two.

And spare me the wanking about "attacking" Chelsea. I spoke the truth: Chelsea remained silent when her mother lied FOUR TIMES about the sniper-fire incident. She could have stopped the absurdity immediately, but she didn't. I don't think this is a good reflection on Chelsea's integrity and ethics. She did not tell the lie herself, but she certainly committed a sin of omission by not standing against the lie.

Most people feel liars are not ethical and lack integrity. Your mileage may vary.

98. Impossible to prove a negative....
...Okay, let's lay this out for you.

My statement regarding Chelsea's agreement with Hillary's lies is based on the fact that there has been no information regarding Chelsea stating the truth about the sniper-firing report. My belief is that it would have been extremely newsworthy if Chelsea had called her mother on her lies, and there would have been at least one report or mention that Chelsea had done the right thing and spoke the truth.

It is impossible to prove a negative. Example: I demand you prove that the sky is not blue.

Do you have refereces to any reports where Chelsea did the right thing and told the truth about the sniper-firing lie? (That would be proving a positive, which is possible.)

If you do not have evidence that Chelsea did correct the record, and because Chelsea correcting her mother publicly would be newsworthy event (i.e., covered by the media), then we can assume that Chelsea did not tell the truth.

To lie is considered by most to be unethical and dishonest. Therefore, Chelsea is unethical and dishonest.

Joe Biden and Chris Dodd dropped out after the first contest. Bill Richardson did after the second. John Edwards placed his final hopes on South Carolina. When that didn't come through, he gracefully withdrew.

In fact, the only candidate at all comparable to Clinton on this is Huckabee. And, if you'll recall, the press actually made fun of him for staying in. Luckily Huckabee has a good sense of humor ("I majored in miracles not math") and he didn't try to stink up the joint before leaving.

What about Belinda Stronach and those lovenest meetings with Bill in NewYork?

....All of the pictures of Bill and Belinda Stronach together, which will surely surface if Hillary ever gets close to the presidency.

71. You've got sex issues, clearly
Who gives a flying fuck about who is sleeping with who? What president or other world leader hasn't had extra marital relationships? Did your old man cheat on you or something? Get the fuck over it already! This is 2008 and Queen Victoria has been dead for years!

79. Stop personally attacking me. It's the sign of a weak poster....
...If Hillary is lesbian it most certainly is germaine to the discussion. She claims she's been vetted. She hasn't for claims that she is a lesbian. Therefore, once again, Hillary is lying.

We've already had 4 years of Bill's sexual escapades distracting the country. I think most voters don't want to go there again. If Hillary is lesbian, it WILL come out, and better to vet her now than latr.

Two words for you: HUMA ABEDIN. Look it up. She's MUSLIM, too. They might even bring Ken Starr out of retirement for that one.

Media knocks out Obama with help from the either "Paid off" or "Compromised Rev. Wright" and Hillary does a "SURGE IN POLLS!" MSM jumps on "Surge" to promote Hillary...that conveniently the Kristol and other NeoCons have as their "flavor of moment" for Dem Candidates they see as vulnerable that they can "knock off" in November.

Don't we have a Repug "PERFECT STORM?" THINK ABOUT THAT....

Sure, the BushCo backwash watch and believe every word... but how many regular people believe everything they are told by the media?

I was sucked into the hate momentarily myself. I wanted to hate Wright... until I actually listened to him beyond the sound bites. Nothing he had to say was wrong... Obama should have embraced their differences, just like the rest of us need to do.

75. Why? Because another neocon Presidency will be the end of this country
Obama was always my last choice. Hillary was another version of Joe Lieberman, just as warlike, and just as reckless on the Middle East. Now that I am with Obama, since Biden and Edwards dropped out, I have become an enthusiastic supporter and volunteer.

Obama has already won the nomination on the strength of pledged delegates, and the supers are not about to incur the wrath of the American people by staging a coup in Denver.

I am sure that I will have my disagreements with an Obama Administration, but I rather have that, than to suffer through a Bush third term.

I vote May 6th. (I don't do early voting because of "election concerns") but Obama will get two votes from "White American NC..." on May 6th. I took a long time deciding...but watching and looking...I had to go with him.

But, frankly...I thought both candidates that Dems and MSM put up fell short of what we needed.

Sadly...I think the WHOLE THING WILL CRASH...and out of the ASHES might be the candidate to heal...

I wish that none of us had to live through this ...the crashing and "re-building." And, some of us might not make it long enough to see it. I still long for the Gore Restoration...whether he would "crash and burn" is open to question...but I will NEVER GET OVER STOLEN ELECTION 2000...because I have a whole part of my life cut out and devoted to POLITICS because of that... And, I'm not by nature political...it's like ALL OF US "Truth Keepers" could NOT STAND BY and WATCH THAT HAPPEN...and not do SOMETHING ABOUT IT... It's just not getting resolved with reparations like we might have hoped.

Whatever...that's my gut post about it. It's painful for all of us who've been here long enough to know what it was about...and how we've watched all the the crap since then..the "hope/defeats" all of it...

and I will be very eager to vote for Obama in the Fall.

I plan to get drunk after the polls close in November. I don't want to be conscious if there is another stolen election. Gore won Florida in 2000, and Kerry won Ohio in 2004.

I think we need to be prepared to be "out of it stoned cold..in a bar somewhere" ...once again. I was so "out of it" when Kerry/Edwards lost...I couldn't function for about a month. Just the barest stuff and no TV...it hurt my brain...

I don't want to go through that again..it might kill me...but I'll raise a glass of wine or stout...because...I do worry...we might be revisiting that crap stuff again.

Anyway...Peace and :hi: to you... "Gotta keep on Truckin'"

93. You (and many others on BOTH sides) need to un-wad your panties & understand the difference between
journalists and pundits.

Journalists aren't making calls either way on the race; the pundits are. The pundits are not journalists. Please understand the difference.
