Jewish supporters buying ad for Obama


A group of Obama's Jewish supporters are raising money for a supportive ad in The New York Times, according to a copy of an email from an Obama backer, Chicago lawyer Jack Levin.

"A group of Jewish Americans all across the U.S. believe Barack Obama would make the best president and hence are in the process of preparing a full-page New York Times ad — to be signed by all of us who would like to be included — showing the U.S. Jewish community?s widespread support for Barack," Levin writes, adding that the ad's sponsors will be known as "American Jewish Patriots."

The need for such an ad is a mark of Obama's continuing struggle to secure the allegiance of Jewish voters — typically a solidly Democratic group — in the face of often inchoate concerns, urban legends and viral e-mails that he's worked hard to rebut.

Because my cousin who lives in Israel says she, her family, and all their friends say Obama will be more of the same with regard to Israel... more borrowing money from China to give to Israel so they can oppress others. I can't find the group at all, and I'm from a half-Jewish family with a number of relatives active in progressive Jewish organizations.

As far as I have heard, there is a broad range of opinion in Israel. Most Israelis tend not to be keen on single-issue politics and generally don't feel that the world revolves around the USA. Hillary is also popular, but I would not be surprised at any mix out to 70:30 for either candidate.

I was just looking at my cousin's Passover pictures, then clicked to check on this thread again, thinking that I'd love to hear what other Americans would say who have family in Israel. My perspective is that their government doesn't speak for them any more than ours does for us, and most people just want to get along. This was illustrated by my cousin's pictures... very mult-national celebration of Passover. I was impressed!
