Will black voters stay home if Obama loses nomination?
Will black voters stay home if Obama loses nomination?
By David Lightman and William Douglas | McClatchy Newspapers

INDIANAPOLIS — Many black voters are making it very clear: They're concerned that Barack Obama is going to be denied the Democratic presidential nomination that they see as rightfully his, and if that happens, a lot of them may stay home in November.

"It would hurt me not to vote," said Charles Clark, an Indianapolis retiree. He's thinking about leaving the presidential box on his ballot blank this fall if Hillary Clinton is the Democrats' nominee.

"There was a heck of a push made so blacks could vote. I know that," he said. "But it would also be very unfair if they pushed Barack Obama to the side."

Michelle Moore, an Indianapolis housewife, is less gentle: "Hillary Clinton would not even still be in the race if Obama was a white man," she said.

Her tough tone was common this week in this city's black community. Why, people asked, is the Illinois senator's relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright being judged so harshly? Why won't Democratic Party officials acknowledge that Obama's in the lead and unite around him?

African-Americans have been the Democratic Party's most reliable bloc, giving about 90 percent of their votes to former Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., in the last two presidential elections.

In a close election this year, an African-American exodus from the voting booth could be costly to Democrats, particularly in the South, where blacks are a large proportion of the electorate.

Todd Shaw, a University of South Carolina political science professor, agreed, citing a groundswell of African-American disenchantment with both Bill and Hillary Clinton. They're particularly annoyed by Bill Clinton's performance during the South Carolina primary and by Clinton supporter James Carville's description of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a Latino, as "Judas" for endorsing Obama over Hillary Clinton.

"The comment plays very badly with African-Americans and Latinos," Shaw said. "They remind them of 'Look what we've done for you; you should stay in line.' That doesn't sit well with voters of color. They view it as Northern machine politics or Old South boss politics."

Hunter Bacot, an associate professor of political science at Elon University in North Carolina, saw another piece of political history haunting black Obama backers.

"There's a sentiment among blacks that they've been taken for granted by the Democratic Party," Bacot said. "If Obama loses, it's as though their candidate's victory was overturned."

Several African-Americans in Indiana, which holds a crucial Democratic primary on Tuesday, said they could be seeing yet another effort by the white establishment to crush any African-American who's earned a powerful position.

"Here we go again," said Eddie Pryor, an Indianapolis retiree.

"It's like there's a ceiling for us," added Bangen Finley, an Indianapolis machinist.

Feelings are similar elsewhere. Former Rep. Floyd Flake, D-N.Y., an African Methodist Episcopal church pastor and president of a private black college in Ohio, said he constantly hears the angst of African-American and young voters about Obama's fortunes.

"If he doesn't get it, there will be a response," Flake said. "The young people will not be showing up to vote for Hillary Clinton if she gets it. I think given the turnout coming from young people and African-Americans (for Obama), I don't think they will go to the polls if she is the candidate."

But Jerry Mondesire, the president of the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP and publisher of The Philadelphia Sunday Sun, an African-American weekly newspaper, said it's foolish for any Democrat to refuse to vote if his or her candidate isn't the nominee.

"It's a stupid way for Obama supporters to think and a stupid way for Hillary Clinton supporters to think," said Mondesire, a pledged Clinton delegate. "It's a selfish and destructive way to think. I can't think of what the Supreme Court would look like if McCain were elected. Roe v. Wade could be diminished, and Brown v. Board of Education could be impacted."

Some African-American voters in Indiana acknowledge that they might come around even if Clinton wins.

"I am offended by Hillary Clinton. What's going on now is unwarranted," said Shirley Graham, an Indianapolis auto company worker. But she will vote Democratic in the fall. "I am a Christian. I can't allow myself to have lingering bitterness," she said.

Others are undecided.

"They're criticizing Obama in ways that are not really relevant," said Bill Davis, a Carmel electrical engineer. "I will make a determination about voting in November at that time."

Michelle Moore, however, has made up her mind: Clinton is out.

"Senator Obama is just not being treated fairly," she insisted. "You would think everything that Reverend Wright says is coming right from Obama's mouth."

Ya know what sort of insults me as a white person? The perception
that most of Obama's followers are African-Americans, and the question as to whether they will stay home if he's not nominated (which in and of itself is craziness, but I digress..). I can assure anyone who cares, this white woman will stay home, raise hell, picket, march, yell, write, etc.

Barack is not the candidate for just African-Americans. He is the candidate for ALL Americans.

9. Well the media always push the bloc vote. I am black and as I have said
many times that I was a Hillary supporter at first. Now, if Obama is ahead in pop vote and delegates and the supers put Hillary in, I will write in Barack's name if I can.

Yes you are right that he transcends the race factor but the right wing and the media ALWAYS put a black candidate or hispanic candidate with their color "base" so this is no surprise.

20. if you notice, they even generally tend to put black surrogates on for Barack. they subtly, and not
so subtly, continue to push the agenda that he is the black candidate with appeal mainly to black voters. I really hate the corporate media and so long for real, true journalism that reports facts for grown ups and those that can think without being spoon-fed propaganda and lies.

28. Earlier
that bloc was divided and mostly for Hillary in a mixture of doubt, loyalty and realism that has all changed with the strength coming from all other blocs save those closely dominated by Hillary. The loyalty thing for one was given up by the Hillary campaign, dividing the old nostalgia, Bill myth people along racial and sexist lines rather than let things happen naturally- giving Obama the united nomination. Instead of divide and conquer or fair competition, the Clinton campaign lunged for a "winning" strategy that made entire blocs hostile entities, something the black community never sought, was always wary of and has been rewarded by no one for their patience, wisdom and commitment.

I hope, after these years of patience and grim stoicism have shown how far that gets them with the DLC crowd they might next be enlisted in the purging of destructive centrists who have crossed the line against the majority of the American people. They have done little except tolerate and mollify big labor, minorities, progressives for what they receive in return in the epic battle to please 2% swing voters. Any sign of outrageous crimes- or worse competition and complaints- from these "outdated lefty" groups sparks virulent attacks exactly reminiscent of the current GOP. Irritated once more, Clinton has risen to the forefront of those DLC snipers to once and for all expose the lame and GOP imitative doom of the general philosophy and methodology.

The worst thing though is that Obama still tends to be DLC in his own way. Would that he would learn the searing lessons and never let this thought diseased group back into prominence. It would really be better to reach out to Repugs who do not threaten to corrupt our party from within than to sweep in a host of Clintonite Quislings still espousing DLC "ideals".

Clinton created this dilemma. Phrasing the question about the "reaction" has forced it to make it all about the victims of DLC indifference and exploitation.

48. I'm a white male, and for me, it's also Obama or bust.
Hillary's Rovian lies, smears and dirty tricks have forever made her an enemy of me.

She will not get my vote this November, under any circumstances. She will not get my vote, and she will not get a dime from me of campaign money.

I'll write-in for Obama if his name isn't printed on the ballot this November. If the Democratic Party is so broken that they'd have a lying cheat like Hillary as the nominee, then the party's lost.

Hillary would be just as bad as McCain, especially in terms of warmongering, selling our jobs to the lowest bidder with NAFTA, and just about everything else. She's in it solely for herself.

91. Once again they want to paint everyone with the AA brush
The beauty of the Obama campaign is that WE are not about RACE.

When you attend an Obama rally it looks like a rainbow of colors and ages.

Sen. Obama does not do anything for African Americans that he doesn't do for ALL his supporters.
And, we don't ask him for favors.
We are just so proud of him that he has run a brilliant campaign!

I'm Fired Up just like you are and I am African American.

I have asked at least 30 of my friends if they would vote for HC -"NO!" is the response

Sometimes HELL NO! and S--- No! and No way!

We will vote down the ticket for Democrats of worth but we will not be voting for Republican Elephants dressed up as a Democratic Donkey.

No way, no vote, no time, not a dime for THEM.

Edited on Thu May-01-08 06:30 PM by kenny blankenship
I think we should leave ominous threats to the suicidal Hillaryjugend , but superdelegates ought to be aware that many people in the Democratic Party base will be reconsidering their affiliation should they GIFT the nomination to the loser and shoo the winner of the primaries off the stage.

I don't think it will happen - I'm 99.9% certain it won't happen. But lest people begin to think "Hey maybe we can get away with rigging this thing" it should be understood that the Party people look to to uphold fairness in America cannot turn itself into the political equivalent of a professional wrestling league with rigged matches, without much of its base marching away in disgust and anger.

if, after winning the majority of the primaries and caucuses, it is taken away, no amount of endorsing of a compromise ticket will work. people will feel hopeless and marginalized.

and I think he can communicate that effectively.

Tell you something else, if you want to see hopeless and marginalized, then just wait until the day after another Democratic loss in November. That will be a much sorrier sight- especially for those who have no way out of the states and who realize that nothing positive will even begin to happen until the second half of 2013 (at the earliest).

26. Some will, there is a feeling that minorities have been abandoned
by government except when they want the voters to come out. Those that feel this way came out for Obama only because it looks like it could be different this time around. He brings people hope. I am writing this from an area that is minority but not black - we feel the same.

It comes down to this: if your situation is hopeless or near hopeless and suddenly there is someone who makes you believe you are going to be very upset when that someone disappears. There are areas in this country where they have not recovered from the great depression - these are the people I am talking about. Places where job rates have almost always been in double digits.

Then the answer is largely, yes

We may be at war by then and that will modify the equation

No one is more patriotic than African Americans

so, barring war... yes.

I should add... AAs are not so "starry eyed" about their leaders as White people

No Black leader escapes rigorous scrutiny from the AA community and if they screw up>>>>

34. I'm gonna take my ball and go home
The Party will survive. Every year and especially, every 4 years, somebody gets pissed off that "their" candidate didn't win and decides to stay home. It could of made a difference in 2000 and 2004, made a difference to a point where the elections couldn't have been "stolen". If Senator Obama does not win the nomination it is because people have been doing this for years and do this for a living knew that he could not win the general election and that another candidate stood a better chance. Cest la vie.

One thing I haven't seen a hue and cry for lately is multiple other political Parties. It wasn't all that long ago that there was a Conservative Party candidate and a Liberal Party candidate as well as a few other large organizations supporting someone. Never seemed to work out for the Communist Party candidate or the Right To Life candidate.

45. If you are talking about black DEMOCRATS, then, of course not.
Give them some credit. I think its bordering on racist to assume that all black democrats act as a single body. They've been watching the Republicans drag this country into hell along with every other color of people. They will not put another Republican in the White House. Let's give Democrats of all ethnicities some credit, please.

90. Something I've seen few discuss . . .
If Obama is unfairly denied the nomination, McCain would be very smart to actively campaign for black votes.

And black voters would be very smart to elicit some distinct concessions from the Republicans in return for swinging votes their way. This could be the beginning of some realignments. Republicans have ignored black voters because they haven't needed them need them and don't expect to get their votes. But if the black vote goes into play, that could change everything.

This is one of the reasons I think the Super Delegates will not undercut Obama - they know that this could set the stage for major political realignment.

If Hillary gets elected, it will be the end of the Democratic party. The youth vote will be lost. The African American vote will be lost. All you'll have left are the disillusioned Republicans.

55. Why is it,
when a leftist liberal says he may stay home or vote 3rd party because of the centrist/corporatist/3rd way/"new" dem nominee, the response is always about party loyalty, getting in line, compromising, and, whatever happens, voting for the DEMOCRAT. No matter how bad a proposition that Democrat is.

If black voters stay home, though, it's okay? It's understandable? It's somehow justified?

I smell a double standard from miles away here.

58. I don't plan to vote for either of them,
and I said so repeatedly when they first announced their candidacies.

Regardless of who wins, the whole primary process was corrupt from the beginning, and guaranteed to force a centrist/corporatist down my throat.

I'm not swallowing.

Are my principles any less valuable than yours? Does my vote count less because I'm not black?

If it's legitimate for black voters, or for Obama supporters to stay home, then it's legitimate for me to stay home or vote independent or 3rd party.

Or there is a big double standard.

Which is it?

69. I'd say it's very likely. SO will a lot of Obama supporters
African Americans have been USED by the Democratic Party for years - yet they have been very loyal supporters. Not like they have much choice, I guess.

And they are largely IGNORED - except every four years the Democrats pander for their votes - and largely get them.

NOW they finally have HOPE that there is someone who might end up in the White House who WON'T IGNORE them for four years until he wants their votes again and they are supporting the man in DROVES.

AND he is winning in pledged delegates and in the popular vote (especially with African Americans).

SO - if this man is yanked out from under them unfairly (and at this point that is the ONLY way it CAN be done) then I'd say YES they will stay home and they will be VERY UNLIKELY to want to support Democrats again as much as they have in the past. If this is (in addition to ignoring them for 4 years at a time until their votes are wanted) how they're going to be treated by this party - essentially, like THEIR VOTES AREN'T IMPORTANT - why should they NOT stay home?

Heck *I* might stay home myself if that happens and I'm NOT black.

IT'S BAD ENOUGH that AA's are considered important ONLY every four years - BUT if they are NOW considered UNIMPORTANT EVEN THEN, TOO - yep, they'll stay home, I'd guess.

SO WILL I.

Obama is the likely nominee. Hillary has a long road to hoe.

But look at the closest battleground states: Iowa, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Colorado, New Mexico. Pennsylvania. Except for PA, all of these states have very small black populations. (And PA's is not large).

Black voting strength will be diluted in states like NC, SC, GA, AL, and LA, (where white voters will overwhelmingly back McCain) and their votes in CA, MD, DE are not crucial because these states are always voting solid Dem, and are never battlegrounds.

In other words, the swing states are not where many black voters are. And these are the states that will be the difference makers in choosing our next President. These half a dozen mostly small states is where this election is going to be fought. The electoral college system is maddening as hell.

at least he will end the Iraq War instead of starting WWIII with Iran, Syria, and Russia on the 'oil' side and the USA, Israel, and hopefully Britain (we were just kidding about those Iraqi WMDs, but please follow us again) on the 'anti-terroism' side. OPEC would sanction the USA with its oil and we'll long for the days when gas was just $4 per gallon and even the staunchest environmentalists will be buying stock in new ANWAR drilling companies.

They aren't "just voting for a candidate". This election is bigger than just one candidate.

No president has absolute power. They will need the Senate and Congress helping them.

Therefore, to not vote and allow McCain to win would be shooting themselves in the foot, imho.

We need a Democratic president to sign bills that are passed.

We don't have that right now, so I hope all will reconsider the idea of not voting.

Many poor in this country are barely hanging on as it is. Don't turn your backs on them.

Swallow your pride and vote. If I could do it in 2004, so can you.
