OMG!! Crowd Chants 'OBAMA-OBAMA' During Clinton Speech at NC Dinner Tonight
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/05/clinton-says-sh.html

"ABC News' Eloise Harper and Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., had to endure cheers for Sen. Barack Obama and boos for the North Carolina governor, who has backed her, at the North Carolina Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Raleigh, N.C., Friday evening -- where both she and Obama spoke.

Toward the end of her speech, Clinton pointed out to the crowd that she thinks she is tough, saying to the crowd, “I am no shrinking violet.”

Clinton, attempting to show that there will be party unity, said, “If Sen. Obama is the nominee, you better believe I'll work my heart out for him.”

The crowd erupted into a chant for Obama, leaving Clinton speechless for a few seconds while she waited for them to finish. During her speech, Clinton also mentioned Gov. Mike Easley, who has endorsed her candidacy, and she was momentarily rendered speechless while the crowd booed him."

which, nonetheless, is damaging to my Volvo leather interior and my $500 Gucci loafers. It's a bitch getting those things clean.

255. You Give Yourselves Away Every Time You accuse Obama Supporters
of cult-like behavior when in fact it's just called support. See, Hillary can not win without something bad happening to the party as a whole, so who is more "cult-like"? Support for her now, even though she can't win, makes many of us who didn't support Obama wonder why? Is it cult-like admiration for her, or the desire to cripple the Democratic candidate come the GE? I know Rush Limbaugh is enjoying this....

I also know how intimidated you "So-Called" Hillary supporters are so I can see why you feel the need to attack his massive support the way you do. I also get this weird feeling you are more intent on smearing/targeting Obama because he will be the GE opponent to McCain.

If anything, folks like you have convinced many Kucinich, Edwards, Dodd, Richardson supporters to rally around Obama because of your cult-like obsessive taunting. You are either politically stupid or on the wrong message board.

In summary, his rather large support must really scare you. Hmmmmm......

Frankly, that was a nice thing that HRC said.

We need to all get together and stop getting played by the Rethug controlled MSM. Our fight should be with McCain and the Rethugs, not each other.

297. I wish it were that easy
If you knew a way to call off the bullying Obamaites who haunt DU, I'd be with you in a second.

This highly-rated thread celebrates the abuse of Hillary that was heaped upon her for, as you note, saying a nice thing.

I was an Edwards supporter who found the abusiveness of the Obama fans a good reason to go for the alternative: HRC.

I would love nothing more than for this campaign to suddenly change gears and for Democrats to remember how to respect each other. But places like DU and DailyKos have turned into cesspools of Hillary Hate and robotically repeated lies about her, and a few of us feel it's appropriate to wag the finger of shame and snark. Your kind offer notwithstanding, I think it's well-earned in these circles.

Guess BHO did not quite have his new pander story memorized! I am sure it went better today.

…… Sitting on a picnic bench in a park on Pagoda Street, Indianapolis, in discussion with a group of 30 supporters, he told a story about the "modest" background of himself and his wife, Michelle.

And 10 minutes later, seemingly having forgotten, he told them it all again.

Edited on Sat May-03-08 01:54 AM by WillYourVoteBCounted
If these people respected the laws in any of the states they are tampering with,
they could have done what all voter advocate groups in the state are doing,
recommending early voting because you can register to vote then.

The best part of this is if someone has fallen off the rolls, it can be corrected
on the spot.

No provisional ballot needed!

Edited for clarification.

The calls led voters to think they weren't registered and could not vote until
getting the forms and mailing them in.

Big problem - register by mail deadline for primary had already passed.

rather than excusing business as usual.

Without the kids, we might still be in Vietnam, and suppressing black votes might still be legal.

Be glad that a new generation gets energized and impatient about the state of the world. Have we 40-somethings, 50-somethings, and older left the world a better place for the kids?

What have the kids inherited from us? What cause do we have to deny them anger and impatience - even if it was just the kids booing Clinton?

We wouldn't even have the netroots without the kids, and the activist left of the Democratic Party that Clinton herself has booed - in private. Show no love for core Democrats in an effort to lead the party - you reap what you sow.

I know full well about Viet-nam and the civil rights movement.

I also know that rude is rude. And intimidation is intimidation.

Think about this.... The most effective protests, throughout history, have been of the silent and non-violent ilk. MLK knew it. Ghandi knew it. And... if Mr. Obama is to lead such a "movement" he will need to teach his followers some essential principles.

I am beginning to wonder about Barack's own knowledge of how to lead a peaceful movement, to be honest. Have you ever heard him invoke respectful protest? Non-violence? Does Rev. Wright invoke non-violent resistance? Or is he too busy hating??? How about Bill Ayers?

A movement without adequate leadership is of no use to me, or my party.

316. Is rudeness the same as violence?
I do not see the two as being the same. It is rude to interrupt a fellow Democratic speaker, but it certainly isn't violent.

Martin Luther King is invoked often as the standard for how to wage a protest movement, which frustrates me because he is viewed as non-controversial now that he has been murdered. There are plenty of people at the time who thought he was rude to challenge white supremacy in the way that he did. He and the movement he led had successes, but also stalled at times, and the disintegration of the poor people's campaign amid his murder illustrated some of the limits of conscience-oriented protest of the kind he waged. It required a unique charismatic leader, enduring unspeakable personal pressure and sacrifice, to sustain the movement as long as it did. If his way is the only way to make change happen (or the approach of Gandhi), then we're in trouble, since few people have that particular capacity for self-sacrifice and righteous nonviolent in the face of outright hatred. To criticize Obama because he's not MLK - well, HC isn't MLK either. There are no guaranteed paths to serious social change.

Also, from an historical perspective we wouldn't hold MLK responsible for the actions of all of his followers. After all, he was killed during his direct action following the Memphis garbage strike, and while he felt personally responsible for the civil disturbances during the Memphis campaign, it was unfair then and unfair now to say that he was responsible for what some of his followers did. The same is true for Obama, or for Clinton, for that matter. It's a fallacy to say that actions of supporters or former supporters (i.e. Rev. Wright) are their responsibility.

I wonder also what you think about the Black Power movement and the social changes in both attitude and policy that various wings of the party set in motion. I also wonder what you think of the direct actions done within the anti-Vietnam movement, such as the Berkeley Free Speech Movement that was largely nonviolent, but certainly not polite, with lots of shouting down of Clark Kerr, the president of UC-Berkeley, and other confrontations that eventually had very positive results.

I'll leave the swiftboating of Rev. Wright alone, just because it's been discussed ad nauseum, or maybe I'll just say that to equate him with violence when he's been leading an effective and peaceful ministry in a large urban African American church is not fair, and I've been suprised to hear it from so many Democratic leaners. I feel this way especially when HC gets a free pass from some despite her saber-rattling in recent rhetoric and her famous enabling of the war in Iraq with her Senate vote.

All in all, it's fair to invoke principled pacifism if that's what you think is the most effective way towards change, but stand-patism among Democrats during the neoconservative era has led to the stalling of an activist agenda for change. It took the netroots, Michael Moore, and lots of collective outrage against Bush to get things energized again. Obama is probably less of a righteous fiery voice compared to the party's left, but I believe he can help move us in the right direction - towards change. It's mostly up to us as the American people to initiate progressive action on issues, if it's going to come.

Show me where Hillary has shown some class during this campaign.

Obama could have made a big issue of Hillary's big lie about Tuzla airport. He didn't. He has been so restrained. He is a classy guy. I wish he wasn't so classy. I would have loved to hear Hillary get buzz sawed. But Obama showed some class.

So where has Hillary shown restraint and avoided taking the low road?

She deserves to be booed. She deserves to have rotten fruit and vegetables and eggs thrown at her. Fitting for her rotten campaign.

Sure she got boos. If she can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Better yet, she can start acting like a Democrat, instead of emulating the worst of the Republicans (Rove)

thing we've all despised for the past 8 years? Could that possibly be it? Remember she's the one who's qualified to be in the kitchen, taking the heat. I say let her prove it, and you guys should buck up & stop "whining"...you know like Bill Clinton told Obama after the ABC ambush?

62. The one time I had a chance to hear Bill Clinton speak, some rude Obama
woman (aging hippie) droned "OH-BaMA" incessantly. When asked by others to please be quiet so we could hear President Clinton speak inside the room (we didn't have floor passes), she started screaming "I have free speech!" Later her ranting that a Hillary supporter called Obama a terrorist shut down the opportunity for any of us gathered outside the door to the Convention to hear Bill Clinton.

The door was slammed. I left. Couldn't imagine anyone being that rude. It wasn't going to get votes for Bama.

I see all this talk about cutting the campaign short and allowing Obama to get the nomination because the Democratic party is being divided, and obviously because he hasn't answered any questions he should get the nod.
Obama's supporters, the MSM media, blabbering radio personalities, and insulting bloggers are dividing the party. Then they have the audacity to blame the divide on Hillary. It's YOU.

Much like the bunch of Clinton-supporting rude not-so-little fuckers who sat right behind me at a recent event. They shouted down a speaker for Obama (after the speaker for Clinton had spoken without interruption), and kicked me in the back and bumped me with their sign enough that I was forced to move.

News flash: neither candidate has a monopoly on supporters who are rude little fuckers. I'm trying to keep from having my feelings about the candidates influenced by the worst of their supporters.

111. Sorry, but "THE BAM" first reminded me of cult behavior among Obama supporters
This is what the Obama 'movement' is all about...

"THE BAM"... PASS IT ON AT THE NEXT OBAMA RALLY!

Having caught "Obama fever" like so many others rallying in support of Barack, I experienced something at a Barack Obama Rally on Thursday, January 10 at the College of Charleston here in Charleston, South Carolina, which I felt was both inspirational and spontaneous!

As Barack worked the line following the close of his speech, there was a surge of people moving forward hoping to get close enough to shake Barack's hand. Since I was standing about 20 feet back from center stage in the crowd, I felt the crowd down front tighten as many of us stood on our toes, stretched our bodies forward while reaching out to Barack. I noticed that a six foot tall guy who was standing in front of me had stretched far enough above the crowd and shook hands with Barack. As the guy drew back his hand I asked him, "You shook his hand didn't you?" Happily the guy said "Yes." I then said, "give me some of that" and the guy shook my hand with the same hand he had just clasped with Barack's. A woman friend of mine who was standing next to me saw me shake hands with the guy. I turned to her and said "He just shook hands with Barack," to which she responded..."Hey, give it up." We then shook hands. She then turned to the person next to her and shook hands. This chain of hand shakes went on for about five or six more persons.

I did not know the tall guy in front of me; he is white, I am black. But at the moment we shook hands, I felt some solidarity with this stranger, consummated by a handshake and signifying some unspoken agreement presumably about Barack Obama and his core message of UNITY!

I call this hand-shake scenario the "BAM" because, descriptively, it takes a bit of Obama's name and it's the sound of a collision, of People Coming Together!

Edited on Sat May-03-08 01:28 AM by VolcanoJen
How cultish. How depressing. How youthful. How sad. They're experiencing way too much glee while engaged in a political process. They should just stand politely and show no enthusiasm for who may very well be the leader of the United States of America for the next eight years. They should really not be so engaged and excited. It's way too spontaneous and goofy and oddball and young and they're having far too much fun.

How awful. They must be in a cult because they really shouldn't be so attached or engaged or excited, and they certainly shouldn't be expressing their youthful exhuberance in such a weird and unfamiliar manner.

104. Actually, I would. I come from a generation where respect is afforded
to anyone trying to speak, particularly members of the same party at a party function.

I'd be equally--if not more, because he's a newcomer--irritated if Obama got the same treatment. There's just no need for it.

I'd even be pissed if our people booed McCain in a debate setting.

You really have to be an ignorant, meanspirited, insecure, frightened, stupid, immature, fucking asshole to get a "kick" out of booing a fellow Democrat at a party function. I just don't see how such BOORISH behavior marries up with HOPE CHANGE BELIEVE. What, these clowns HOPE they'll CHANGE eventually, and we'll BELIEVE they aren't a bunch of ignorant shitheads, is that it?

But then, we old geezers, and our quaint old ways, we don't count. I'm serious--there are many of us who had better not be counted on come November if this childish shit keeps up. Yes, you can? You might be having to "can" all by yourselves. This brutish attitude is depressing the vote, and sending an increasing percentage of it over to Popeye as the alternate.

I'm voting the ticket, but most of my geezer friends aren't so loyal. And I don't fit the fucking paradigm, either--I'm NAVY--you think I would default to McCain. Your crew make it harder, each and every day, to get enthused though. Why, I might just get "addled" and forget what day it is, if this childish shit keeps up. Of course, that's unlikely, as I have to bring a hundred or two older voters to the polls--most of whom have McCain down as their alternate to Clinton.

Go figure.

I'm curious about something though, is it ok, in a Democratic tradition, for protesters to be rude sometimes? How about anyone faced with opposition to anything that they deem to be wrong? It's OK to be RUDE at a party CELEBRATION. Yeah, being an asshole at a celebration is always "cool."

And protesters? What are you protesting? That your filet mignon was OVERDONE?

It's the DEMOCRATIC PARTY...BIG TENT.

What, you're protesting INCLUSIVITY and TOLERANCE? A willingness to hear ALL VIEWS?

Or is this NEW Democratic party going to turn into a lockstep far-left fest, with no centrists or moderates allowed? You won't be liking Obama once you get to know him, if that's the case.

Good grief. What a load. What I'm curious about is where you get this crap. It's a DINNER, not a sit-in. A PARTY party, not a protest.

Christ. The efforts to justify the unjustifiable must make you dizzy. Whatever. You have fun with your dudgeon and righteousness, and keep excusing the inexcusable.

271. Well then, I take it back. Sorry if the primary has made me cynical.
Although, I'm not sure if its a generational thing as much as it is a cultural thing. Consider British Parliament, where drowning out a speaker is just part of the political process.

I grew up in a culture where the first thing that would come to my mind if any supporters did this would not be that they were rude or doing something inappropriate. However, I do remember that back when certain protesters were occasionally disrupting congressional hearings some people felt the same way about that. Even though they were on our side on the issues, some thought it was terrible and outrageous that they would disrupt like that. So I get that there is certainly a culture that thinks this is just totally out of line.

But its not mine. :)

85. Here's a novel concept: actions have consequences
If you run your campaign from the gutter, you risk polarizing the public and increasing your negs (as we have seen). And then supporters moan when there is blowback - people get negative and push back. Responsibility is a much lauded but often avoided thing.

So that's what all this fuss is about? You'd think people had started flinging feces at her for all the outrage here. That was tame and the HILL-A-RY people seemed to shut down the O-BA-MAs pretty quick, not to mention she looked fairly amused at the enthusiasm. Sorry, I'm just not feeling the outrage. :\

153. Here is the Charlotte Observer's take on it.
http://www.charlotte.com/540/story/607795.html

Perhaps the most unusual element of the event was that Clinton, after weeks of seeing throngs of supporters, faced hundreds of Obama's supporters in stands alongside an equal number of her own.

There were scattered boos from Obama backers when Clinton talked about her gas tax plan. And there was almost certainly a first in the 78-year history of the Democrats' annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner -- lusty boos and hisses for a sitting Democratic governor, Mike Easley, who endorsed Clinton earlier in the week.

Mike Easley is not that popular with actual Democrats in this state. I tolerate him because he keeps the election process clean. On his part, he never attends dem conventions in Charlotte, and in 04 refused to be photographed with Kerry/Edwards.

Reminds me of a time I was at the theater with a friend. She got very into a particular musical number and voiced her enthusiasm at the end. The theater patron in front of us turned and scolded her, saying "you're being vulgar." Without a beat she retorted, "No, I'm being enthusiastic."

I guess one person's rudeness is another's enthusiasm.

217. What exactly did "Hillary" do that is so wrong?
I get the impression that you believe people are not allowed to ask questions about Obama, his relations, business partners, mentors, etc?
Is that true? If it concerns voters, don't you think it is in Obama's best interest to address these questions until voters are comfortable?
I know you are comfortable with anything and everything Obama.
But many of us (as you will learn either now or in the GE) are very uncomfortable.
And I think it would be a simple matter for Obama to answer these questions.
Unfortunately, he displays nervousness and anger at the questions.
And this reinforces the concerns.

Hillary Clinton withstood $40 million attacks and investigations. Obama's time will come.
It is part of the job description.

Grow up

Numerous threads have been posted on this forum night and day documenting what Obama supporters object to in HC's campaign strategy. Just this week, you could see dozens of discussions of Robocalls, Pastor-gate, bittergate, "shame on you Barack Obama," associating Obama with Farrakhan and the Weathermen, and numerous additional examples of the "kitchen sink" strategy used by Clinton. Personally, I welcome discussions of issue differences - that's why I'm here, I look for them, and I get plenty of perspectives different from my own, and I am glad for it. There's every reason for you to have a more nuanced view of what Obama supporters object to about Clinton's tactics, whether you agree with their views or not.

If you had read at least two of the pro-Obama threads that have appeared today, you would know that the race-baiting tactics in particular have resulted in a 30% decline in African American support for Clinton. Her tactics have cost her dearly among this core Democratic constituency. Maybe these tactics are neutral according to HC's core, which includes white working class supporters, older voters, conservative Democrats, white women among other groups, but her overall negatives have consistently gotten higher this campaign, and that's especially visible with a couple of additional core groups of voters in the Dem. primary - African Americans and netroots activists.

As to your point that Obama supporters are, more or less, a kool-aid drinking cult (funny, that kind of rudeness gets a free pass repeatedly from HC supporters on this site), there are plenty of Obama supporters here that like a good discussion, including me. I voted for Kucinich last time and would have leaned Edwards this time if it weren't for the foolish and cataclysmically damaging vote for the IWR that he, Clinton, Kerry, and several of the 2008 Dem. candidates cast. I saw Obama at a campaign stop and was impressed enough to support him. And I'm not naive enough to believe that any single candidate is going to deliver us from the massive economic, social, and environmental problems that we're going to face. Of course not! But if you want dialogue, start one. Post about an issue of importance, including your view of the candidate. But you lose me with the sanctimonious accusations against Obama supporters, who have brought a critically absent passion, monetary support, and impatience with business as usual to the campaign season.

I try not to be rude and I'm not most of the time, but the fact is that the issues matter, and if we can't act with conviction and passion, we're in trouble. If we all make nice or not, it comes down to an awesome challenge we all face at this point in our nation. Every politician and citizen needs to step up and _do something_, or the real problems will engulf us. I see way more of that need for change emphasized in the Obama campaign - hope and change to energize us and challenge apathy and fear, rather than HC's 35 years of experience in a broken political system. Agree or disagree with my support of Obama and opposition to HC, that's fine, but it would sure help if everyone would come to the site willing to discuss things, and even more importantly, willing to act.

She's running to be president of the USA, not the local knitting society. Would you also object to protesters at a McNutt rally?

Judging by the juvenile boorishness of Obama's supporters.

Without interruptions.

That piece of paper, the Constitution, suggests that she, and you and I as well, have that right. And that it is self-evident.

259. There's a history here
Clinton is in trouble because of her failing to denounce and reject OPERATION CHAOS. Plus, her campaign is using surrogate groups to make robocalls to mislead voters and suppress turnout here in Durham. Maybe you are OK with attempts to suppress Democratic primary voting in your state. I am not.

Remember how hard the Clintons worked to get the White House for Gore in 2000? Their outrage at the SCOTUS theft? Or their tireless championing of Kerry? Again, there's a history. It looks like Clinton is out to destroy the party. Past behavior predicts future behavior, and the clintons have a history of promoting themselves, not the party.

That's what the crowd of democratic grassroots folks were reacting to.

307. Actually, the kids showing up in the cheap seats is a big deal.
That's called expanding your base, and if HC could do it too, we'd have a Democratic victory in November no matter who is nominated at the top of the ticket.

Show me how she's expanded the Democratic base this election season and my impression of Clinton will be more positive.

278. The Dem leadership loves to lose.
How did they lose in 2004?? A dip-sh@t Pres in an unpopular war - they have a knack for losing. Now, they are going to nominate another loser who will be utterly destoryed by the Repubs. The Hillary dems will not support Obama, because they see him for what he is a corupt - Rezko, Exelon, Blackwell - unelectable - Wright Ayers kind of candidate and all the detail will be on display courtesy of the Repubs.

The Superdelegates are idiots if they nominate Obama.

300. welcome to DU
I remember once being at a local fundraiser for our candidate for county sheriff. This is GOP territory, and we had no chance of winning.
Anyway, our candidate gets up and gives his speech. We all clap. Then he criticizes the GOP incumbent for not prosecuting low level pot offenses in the three cities in our county. Our jail was being underutilized. "If I'm elected, I will fill our jails with pot users!" I booed him. There were only about 40 people there, and I booed him. I was wearing a tye dye dead shirt at the time.

Afterword I was talking to his wife, who was the real politician in there family, and she cheered my courage. "We wouldn't be so fucked as a party if more people made their voices heard." She said. I ran for office the next year.

Anyway, welcome to DU...
