+5 Superdelegates - A VERY GOOD DAY For OBAMA!

by BoBo2020
Sat May 03, 2008 at 12:45:45 PM PDT

Wow ! - this has been a busy Saturday in politics.

The day is still young, and there's already been lots of news from the superdelegates (and Guam).

Obama has picked up 5 superdelegates today and at least 2 pledged delegates from Guam (still hoping for 2.5, but not likely at this point).

So far today, Obama has been endorsed by Brian Colon, the Democratic Party Chairman in New Mexico.

Obama also received an endorsement from the South Carolina add-on, former State Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum.

He gained support from Maryland add-on, former Gov. Parris Glendening.

He is also about to pick up:
Pilar Lujan (Guam) - an Obama supporter
Jaime Paulino (Guam) - undecided but on record staing he will support the popular vote winner in Guam.

Meanwhile Clinton picked up:
Maryland add-on, former Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.

And in non-super delegate news:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Martin Sheen support Obama!

Obama has rebounded in the Gallup daily poll, and he is up BIG in Oregon.

He reached out to John Edwards, and gave his amazing "Closing argument" in Indianapolis

Friends of the Earth has endorsed Obama (are you listening Gore?)

The Magnequench and WVWV issues are both catching up with CLinton.

Finally, Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine is going to campaign for Obama in Indiana and Ron Paul, yes THE Ron Paul is considering supporting Obama because of his policy on foreign affairs.

This has been a VERY GOOD DAY for OBAMA!

More good news, Hillary and the media's tactics are failing (actually backfiring on Hillary).

Operation Anti-Chaos: The Narrative on "White Voters" Is Fiction

Nobody - not blogger, nor superdelegate, nor cable news anchor - should open their mouths with another word about this contest until they've studied those graphs and the numbers upon which they are based. Blow explains:

Since January, the Clintons have pummeled Barack Obama with racially tinged comments and questions about his character...

The question is this: Have white Democrats soured on Obama? Apparently not. Although his unfavorable rating from the group is up five percentage points since last summer in polls conducted by The New York Times and CBS News, his favorable rating is up just as much.

Wait. The numbers show that the cynical effort to turn the 2008 campaign into a race riot has hurt the popularity of one candidate among an important demographic, and it's not Barack Obama:

On the other hand, black Democrats' opinion of Hillary Clinton has deteriorated substantially (her favorable rating among them is down 36 percentage points over the same period).

So, to sum up: Look at the damn graphs. You can see that Clinton is in a staggering free-fall among African-American voters, her favorability is down 36 points while 17 percent view her more negatively than before, while Obama's favorable and negative ratings among whites have paired at five point increases. You can even see the small dip - about two percentage points - in his popularity among whites that can be attributed to the news cycles about his ex-pastor, and see that it has leveled out and is now on a straight horizontal line (meanwhile, Clinton's numbers among blacks continue on an extreme downward precipice). The greater context is that even including Obama's slight dip, he's more popular today among white voters than he ever was prior to February.

16. does someone around here have info about the last couple of weeks?
something that lists what's going on with the superdelegates? is someone on DU tracking this with a journal? if not, that would be nice.

I know Obama gained 3 before Friday. One was a switch, which put Hillary down 1 more. And important because of his call for supers to back Obama.

Then Clinton had 5 former chairs write an open letter in response to Andrews' letter. So that ties up the former chairs one way or another? Is one still uncommitted?

Now these 5.

Dust the dirt off your shoulders, ya'll

39. Your work is Awesome, too, ProSense..thank you!
Obama is so gracious..

"From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
RALEIGH, N.C. -- As his rival for the nomination did earlier in the night, Obama praised John and Elizabeth Edwards at a Democratic Party dinner in their state Friday night.

"I want to make sure that I say a special thanks to John and Elizabeth Edwards," he began. "Because they really set the tone for this president race with their courage, with their ideas, with their passion and their commitment to working people and to making sure that we focus our attention on not just the haves, not even the have littles and want mores but the have nots in America, and I'm so grateful for their contribution, and I am looking forward to working with them in the next administration to make sure that we are doing everything we can to deliver on the full promise of America."

Both Democrats have courted Edwards' endorsement, but he is not expected to declare his support before Tuesday's election.

The Illinois senator also echoed Clinton's remarks about the party being unified in November.

"If Hillary Clinton were the nominee, I would support her in a heartbeat," he said. "And I know that if I am the nominee then she will support me, and the reason is because, although we are campaigning vigorously, and we have serious differences in both policy and approach -- one thing that I can say, is that our differences pale in comparison to our differences with the other party."

43. However, I'm still worried...
It bothers me that McCain is beating him, though Grandpa can't seem to crack 50%. It is baffling that people are even attracted to McCain. I'm sure much of that is explained by Rev. Wright. But I am also struggling with the fact that Democrats are supporting Hillary Clinton with her divisiveness. She hasn't yet explained why any of us should vote for her; all she is doing is giving us reasons why we shouldn't support Obama.

Independents will not go for Hillary. The net/grassroots will not be all that enthusiastic about Hillary, blacks will not be enthused at ALL about Hillary. So there are many if's, and's, & but's whomever we nominate. Obama just has a better chance at building our majorities in Congress.

74. I'm sorry but your post and your avatar defies reasoned logic!
Do you really want us to believe that Reps and Indies (and many Dems, for that matter) will cross over to vote for Hillary? This is what I don't understand about Hillary supporters. They keep repeating the fallacy that Obama can't win and only Hillary can, but neglect to acknowledge how polarizing she is; how high her negatives are; the fact that she will energize and galvanize the Republican party in ways we haven't seen since 1994 when her disastrous Health Plan led to the Republican Revolution. Hillary supporters haven't explained how Hillary expects to get most Dems, crossover Reps, Indies...and the young and minority voters.

They just continue to repeat over and over again that Obama can't win white working-class people, which is subtle racism on their part. (They still haven't explained UT, ID, WY, IA, and my home state of GA and other southern states where Obama garnered support from ALL races and classes.)

Again, you haven't explain WHY exactly we should vote for Hillary; you just whine about Obama like many Hillary supporters continue to do, hoping that the divide and conquer, Rovian/Atwater tactics will work.

That is quite pathetic!!!

and those advantages that McCain has, aren't only against Obama, but also go for Hillary as well!!!
Hillary will have big problems against McCain, just as Obama would.

Why is it, when someone says that "the road will be tough for Obama in the general", without even criticizing him directly, Obama supporters assume that its a pro-Hillary poster who dislikes Obama???

86. You're wrong!
Let me explain. McCain can't seem to reach 50%, yet the media is telling us that he has all these advantages. He doesn't. If he did, he would be able to raise money to compete. He would be able to go to states like LA and campaign for Republicans. He failed. He can't rely on Bush to campaign for him; that's political suicide. And get this: Obama's 50-state strategy will prove effective because it will force McCain to campaign in states that should be squarely in his corner. Obama will put VA into play and other swing states like MO, CO and WI. The media wants you to believe that Obama is trouble because he can't win FL and OH, but he doesn't have to. If he puts states like VA, NC, CO and so on, in play, the election is over! It's not about FL and OH if other states are in play.

As for the strength of the Indie vote, I think the Indies will be split between Obama and McCain. Hillary has no pull with Independent. If she somehow "steals" the nomination and is the Dem nominee, she cannot hope to win the Independents, nor will she be able to generate support from African Americans. I think she realizes this. Her strategy is to destroy Obama so that McCain wins and then she'll run again in 2012. There's no way in hell that she will win the AA vote, which ANY Democrat needs in order to win an election. This is good because for years, the Dem party has taken black people for granted. Not this time!

Finally, I am sick and tired of people assuming that just because we are Obama supporters, we are sheeple who do so blindly without any critical analysis or thought. That is entirely untrue! I have been very critical of Obama. I, too, am AA and was a staunch Kucinich supporter. Like most AA, I DID NOT support Obama in the beginning. Hillary had nearly 70% of support in the black electorate. Even when Kucinich sadly left the race, I DID NOT support Obama. Only after I researched his policies did I move to him. And I could not in all consciousness support Hillary and her DLC record.

83. I've been canvassing for Obama in "McCain" country...
democrats can't stand McCain. Most of the republicans I know (except the very conservative religious ones) have either switched to democrat to vote for Obama or will stay republican and vote for Obama in the fall. The others just shake their heads and say he is just like Bush and they are very disappointed with the current administration...so they probably won't vote at all. I don't believe these polls. When McCain and Obama are side by side in debates there will be no comparison. The Obama smears have been warn out and if there were more then Clinton would of found them. We haven't even started pulling out McCain's baggage and from what I have been hearing he has a lot! I believe that as soon as Obama win's the primaries that the democrat party will back him and be unified. With all the new registered democrats all over the U.S. this will be Obama's Presidency! The only way I see this being stopped would be if the republicans would pull the "hanging chads, electronic voting machines scandals back in" or took us to war again right before the election. If this were to happen there would be major riots all over the U.S. The people are on board this time and they are saying "Not This Time!".

51. Thanks for the links and for following this so closely.
I'm amazed by the volatility of the Gallup Poll numbers, but pleased by the current trend.

Superdelegates are staying strong in their net support for Obama. Great news!

I'm glad also that the final round of big primaries is coming up. It's not too late for a victory in Indiana, which would be dessert at this point!

Gobama! See you all in the GE!

55. Once again ProSense, You make PRO SENSE
Excellent research and analysis. If anyone Votes according to what a newSpundit tells them, then I consider them self deficient in their own Critical Thinking Skills.

I choose a candidate by listening to their SPEECHES and then research their policies. Anyone who knows how to use CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS should be able to comprehend this as well.

Thank you ProSense for putting this all together.:yourock: You do excellent research:applause:

84. You are so right...this is where Hillary has blown it....
the super delegates are mostly people who use their critical thinking skills and she has just been pandering to the "blue" collared crowd. Why is the blue collared crowd not voting for Obama...because "he is unpatriotic because he doesn't put his hand on his heart.... and he is Muslim and his paster is definetly Muslim...". Believe me I was out canvassing for Obama among that group and the conservative elderly democrats and they believe that stuff and it is hard to convince them otherwise. I even met people who loved everything else about Obama but because "he is Muslum and unpatriotic" they won't vote for him. The funny part is they all hate Hillary even more so say they probably won't vote for anyone. My theory is as soon this crap is off the news stations 24/7 they will move on. I know many thnking people have stopped watching the news because it has turned into "the national enquirer" and when the ratings start going down they'll change what they are putting on there.

69. Actually Ron Paul supporting Obama campaign could be a win/win for the following reason...
Edited on Sat May-03-08 11:02 PM by calipendence
Paul's dogged by rumors from his past of having shown signs of racism earlier.

If he supports Obama, perhaps that helps him overcome that criticism of himself, and elevates he and his campaign a bit so that Obama and he can mutually benefit in that area. Perhaps some who supported Paul who might have supported his racial positions of the past, might "grow up" the same way that Paul would appear to be doing and vote for Obama too. If he were to support Clinton instead to the point of helping her get nominated, I think that the racist rumors of his past would get amplified later instead of deflated and make things uglier rather than better, whether that would be their intention or not.

But really hope that Obama holds firm and not bend to the Libertarian notions of downsizing government if Paul tries to push him hard there. I think we really need to spend a lot of time and resource rebuilding what's been destroyed over the last 20-30 years.

Time for a change

In the Democratic primary, we recommend Obama

Do the Democrats need a restoration of the past, or is it time for a change? We think it's time for a change. We recommend a vote for Barack Obama in Tuesday's primary.

The choice between Sen. Obama and Hillary Clinton is not easy. She is indeed ready to be president on day one. After two terms with her husband in the White House and almost eight years in the Senate, she knows how things work. Smart and tenacious, she offers a progressive agenda. There are many reasons to think she'd be a good president.

There are arguments against her as well. For example, many Democrats won't forgive her for voting to authorize President Bush to use force against Iraq. We don't fault her on that. She understood the need for firmness to force Saddam Hussein to admit UN inspectors to ensure Iraq wasn't building weapons of mass destruction. She received assurances that force would be used only as a last resort. She isn't responsible for the debacle in Iraq; President Bush is.

Concerns about Clinton

Yet we're troubled by, to cite a few examples, these aspects of her presidential campaign:• Many of her supporters seem intent on depicting Sen. Obama as the Jesse Jackson of 2008, a leader who appeals to an ethnic minority but not to the broader electorate needed to win.

• She sometimes exaggerates her influence and experiences, as when she claimed she "helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland" and said she ducked under sniper fire in Bosnia.

• Florida and Michigan were stripped of national convention delegates after breaking party rules by scheduling their primaries too early. The candidates didn't campaign in them. Yet after Sen. Clinton did well in those states, she pushed to change the rules and count the votes. That's a cynical, self-serving effort to corrupt the selection process.

• Her tendency to tell voters what they want to hear is disturbing. Her proposal to suspend the federal tax on gasoline this summer is campaign gimmickry, not leadership. Her assertion that she was a critic of NAFTA from the beginning is simply unbelievable. The record shows she was an ardent advocate of the trade deal.

<...>

Many N.C. Democratic leaders recognize his strengths. State Treasurer Richard Moore and Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue, the party's leading candidates for governor, have endorsed him. So have U.S. Reps. David Price, Mel Watt and G.K. Butterfield as well as Harvey Gantt, a former Charlotte mayor; Jim Phillips Jr., a Greensboro lawyer who chairs the UNC Board of Governors; and state Senate majority leader Tony Rand of Fayetteville.

Early in the campaign, Sen. Obama said, "We want a politics that reflects our best values. We want a politics that reflects our core decency, a politics that is based on a simple premise that we stand and fall together."

Yes, we do.

Thanks for the comments and recs.

93. Superdelegates since the Pennsylvania primary: Obama +17, Clinton +11;
*** The weekend in delegates: Obama picked up four superdelegates over the weekend, to Clinton’s net of zero. Obama got the backing of New Mexico Democratic Party Chairman Brian Colon and three add-on superdelegates -- former Maryland Gov. Parris Glendening, former South Carolina Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum and Guam add-on Jamie Paulino (after Obama won the Pacific island territory by seven votes). Paulino beat out Clinton backer Cecilia Mafnas, who was previously the vice chair and counted into our superdelegate count. Evening things out, Clinton picked up the other Maryland add-on: former Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Obama is also expected to pick up the three Illinois add-on superdelegates today around 2:00 pm after the Illinois Democratic Party’s committee meets to officially name the trio. (Note: The Obama campaign announced Kalyn Free of Oklahoma as another super, but we’d already had her on the list as an Obama supporter.) The Delegate Counts: SUPERDELEGATES: Clinton 273-254; PLEDGED: Obama 1,492-1,338; OVERALL: Obama 1,746-1,612. There are 268 undeclared superdelegates. Since the Pennsylvania primary: It's Obama +17, Clinton +11; Since Super Tuesday, Feb. 5: It's Obama +84, Clinton +13; Since Junior Super Tuesday, March 4: It's Obama +41, Clinton +20.
