1. God bless you in your uphill battle.
Best of luck. Sincerely.

7. Actually...
Ed Kowalcyzk of Live did an incredible rendition of this at the Obama rally in Philly.

He tweaked some of the lyrics to add in "Yes We Can", etc. Unfortunately, I can't find a video with clear audio of it.

8. That got me crying
My husband and I ran into a guy we knew named Paul Williams in Harvard Square a week or two after this was filmed. He'd gotten to sit in on the session by virtue of being Timothy Leary's campaign manager -- as I recall, he's the person with the heavy-rimmed glasses whose head keeps bobbing in front of the camera -- and he told us about it very enthusiastically.

We were newly married ourselves, and though in many ways the world seemed terminally fucked-up at that moment, it also seemed wide open and full of possibility. We never thought it would be easy, but we really did think we were getting somewhere. We couldn't have imagined for a moment that we'd still be having to fight the same goddamn battles over and over obsessively almost 40 years later, like some madhouse version of Groundhog Day.

That's the part that hurts, I guess -- that instead of moving ahead with our lives, doing new things and exploring new territory, we as a society have been stuck in 1969 forever, with no hope of release or redemption.

You suppose maybe we could just declare victory and go home?
