Question about the donor list to the clinton presidential library
Edited on Sun May-04-08 10:43 AM by 4themind
On This week, with george stephanopolous he asked Hillary when she'll release the donor list to the presidential library and she said if she's elected, THEN she'll release it. He then asked her, why she would only release it THEN, vs. now for the voters to decide, when she also said 'the voters should decide'. I really didn't understand how her answer justified her original contention (that they'd be released after November 4th), so maybe someone could explain it to me logically (and without equivocations to other politicians preferably).

I could understand, perhaps, if she said 'I have no control over what my husband wants to do with donors to HIS library', or if she said that many she respects the privacy of the donors, and if they want to come out, they could do so on their own volition. I think that either of these arguments, while they will be constantly attacked if she's the nominee, at least allows her to push the issue onto someone else, and perhaps mitigating its impact. But given her answer today, how will she explain this particular issue to voters in the G.E. when the repubs bring it up? Maybe it's no cause for concern and not a game changer (arguably how her tax returns were not a "game changer") but if she wants to talk about being vetted while having this albatross on her shoulder, it's going to give some people pause, and she'd better hope it's decisive number of them.

1. She said she would change the rules
so that donations, going forward, would be released.

They're not public now because people donate to charities with the expectation that their donation is private. In fact, those are the rules now.

If she's president, she'll change the rules and people who want to donate will know up front that their names will be released. But it's unfair to retroactively change the rules when people donated with the expectation of privacy.

2. Neither she nor Bill wants the public to see
that Denise Rich, the former wife of Clinton pardonded tax evader Marc Rich, made a substantial donation to their library. Was Marc Rich's pardoned bought? Only the historians will be able to tell us....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Clinton_pardons_controversy

# Marc Rich, a fugitive, was pardoned of tax evasion, after clemency pleas from Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak, among many other international luminaries. He was required to pay a $100 million dollar fine and waive any use of the pardon as a defense against any future civil charges that were filed against him in the same case. Critics complained that Denise Rich, his former wife, had made substantial donations to the Clinton library and to Mrs. Clinton's senate campaign. Emails uncovered during the course of the investigation revealed that her final donation was provided a year before Scooter Libby requested that she approach Clinton for a pardon. According to Paul Volcker's independent investigation of Iraqi Oil-for-Food kickback schemes, Marc Rich was a middleman for several suspect Iraqi oil deals involving over 4 million barrels of oil.<19>

5. Did anyone question Dole's library and education center
at Kansas University? The public funding used? The government agenda taught?

Will they come after me? I stopped funding when I found about Bill's global agenda.
