So I took a break from the internets and decided to go door-to-door in Indiana.
Edited on Sun May-04-08 05:57 PM by Tatiana
I was very excited about a month ago to actually get a chance to be on the ground contributing in the great Hoosier state of Indiana. However, in the wake of the media's Pastorbation, the closer the end of April/beginning of May loomed, the more anxious I felt.

Let me say from the get-go that I support Barack Obama for President and have never wavered in that support since switching from Edwards after Super Tuesday.

Let me also say that while I agree with some of the things Jeremiah Wright has said, this recent focus on him by the media, along with his own comments, have done both Obama and all the people of different faiths who defended him a bit of a disservice.

That said, I put on my walking shoes last week and this past weekend to talk to the neighboring folk in Indiana about their awesome position in this Democratic Presidential primary. Since we're really not supposed to talk to the media or blog about our experiences, I'll keep this general.

All together, I've spoken to over 300 people in Gary and Fort Wayne, IN. The first door I knocked on in Fort Wayne was answered by a very nice mid-50's couple. They were independents (as were most of the people I spoke with in Fort Wayne). They didn't like any of the candidates and were strongly considering sitting out the election. The wife did say if she decided to vote, she'd probably vote for Hillary because she was a woman and the country could benefit from having a female in the White House. The husband reminded her that the female would also be bringing her husband, Bill Clinton, and said he would never vote for a Clinton for President.

Then a curious thing happened. I hit a slew of households that were leaning Obama. I was waiting for the Wright issue to pop up and it did. A guy was out mowing his lawn and actually waved us over. He was an independent and stated he was a "recovering Republican." His youngest son and daughter-in-law have moved in with him because they can't afford to live on their own. They were actually evicted from their apartment after the son lost his programming job with a company that hired him right out of college. They have a young son. Everyone in the household is registered to vote. The man said he listened to Obama's speech in Muncie and that Obama "makes a lot of sense." He also said the gas tax holiday was "stupid" and it didn't take anyone with a college degree to figure that out. He told me I should know (as I had indicated I was from Illinois and we have done a gas tax break before). I agreed with him and we talked a bit about Obama's plan to break this country's dependence on foreign oil. The guy said it was a shame that Reverend Wright was taking the focus from the important issues in this election and that Obama probably did not know Wright was "like that." I was shocked.

I had gone into this canvassing thing with the idea that I would have to remind voters of the issues before them and that the whole Wright situation was just media distractions from the real problems facing the average Americans. But person after person, door after door, what I heard from Hoosiers in both Fort Wayne and especially in Gary was that they DIDN'T CARE. One lady in Gary told me that she went to church to worship the Lord, not a pastor or his particular opinions. "The media is full of $hit and they love drama. They want to turn this election into a soap opera for ratings."

What I ended up learning is that Americans really are smart. They see through the media hype and they see past the distractions. Gary, in particular, is going through a really rough spot where their once vital manufacturing sector has been exchanged for a service-based economy. The older voters are sick and tired of seeing their children who are ready to get married and start families leave the area (or even the state) due to the lack of good jobs in the state.

I spoke to one young man in Gary who graduated in 2006 from IU (Bloomington) with a degree in computer engineering. He was currently working retail at a clothing store in a mall. He's staying through the primary election this Tuesday and will be voting, but then he's moving to Dallas for a better future at the end of this month. We talked a bit about his upcoming move and he started to tear up. I'm actually tearing up myself, writing this. He doesn't want to leave. His mom is a widower (his dad passed a way his freshman year at college). She is a cancer survivor currently in remission. He's talked to her about moving to Texas with him, but she says Gary is her home. He broke up with his girlfriend due to an inability to maintain a long-distance relationship. She had moved to New York and was struggling to make ends meet as a paralegal. He said he felt like he had failed her because a man is supposed to be the provider and he couldn't find work. Finances were a big strain on their relationship.

I'm a woman of color (both latina and African-American). I was very cognizant of the fact that Indiana, like many of the other states, has its share of racists. In fact, I was aware that the neighborhoods I was canvassing were not likely to have many residents of color. (I ended up visiting two households with residents of color.) I have to say I have never felt so connected, so bonded through shared experiences as I have these past couple of weeks. People want to be able to send their children to college. And they want to know that after college, there will be work available to them. People want to be able to watch their parents grow old and be there for them. People want to able to provide for their spouses, partners, and significant others.

Bush economics have really taken a toll on this nation and its citizens. Families are hurting, children are going hungry, our elders are unable to retire with dignity. At the last house I visited, before I headed back to HQ, I met a retired veteran in his 60's. He stepped out onto his porch in a Harley-Davidson T-shirt and bermuda shorts. He told me that he didn't give "two $hits" about the Rev. Wright mess. He said he didn't blame Obama for what Wright had said or done. "Hell, I voted for Bush twice. People make mistakes," he said.

During some point in our conversation, I remember him telling me was that "A change was coming."

I hesitated and decided not to point out that Rev. Wright had actually said something similar in a recent speech of his. However, this guy looked at me and smiled in a way that warmed my heart. He said he heard Rev. Wright say that on TV, so he must not be all that bad as they were making him out to be anyway.

Take heart, DU. I'm starting to truly believe, this time, America is going vote for change.

3. Indiana
90% of the people there are super nice. Lived there for 3 years. The majority of GOPers there are more likely to try to convert you to their sect of Christianity than insult you. Values is more the GOP calling card there than economics.

63. 90% super nice... unless you're gay.
I used the state for in-state tuition, then RAN as fast as I could to somewhere safer as a gay person. Lots of bigotry there, but even bigots feel pain when they loose their jobs.

105. Depends on the city you're in
The cities are one state, the rural areas are another. Bloomington had the largest per capita gay population for a number of years... may still.

Personally I have encountered MUCH more bigotry here in Arizona than I ever did in Indiana.

129. Learn how to spell "lose" or you're going to look like a troll here.
Edited on Mon May-05-08 03:55 PM by Th1onein
"Loose" means something doesn't fit tight, as in your belt is "loose" around your waist. "Lose" means that you can't find something, or are in the process of it being lost.

Welcome to DU.

20. I was simply amazed at how kind everyone was to me.
People offered me drinks and food. No one was rude. The economy seemed to be of paramount concern to most of the people that I talked to.

It has been a very rewarding experience.

27. I don't know how this will all play out on Tuesday.
Quite a few people I talked to in Gary had already voted early (for Obama).

I was just really touched by the guy that's moving to Texas. I'd said something along the lines of "Oh, that must be exciting!" and the look that he gave me, and the tears that started to fill his eyes just made my heart sink. Texas is a long way from Indiana.

108. I was in Winston-Salem!
I was put in a very strong Obama neighborhood. I had one man tell me the houses he'd already visited and they'd worked out the rides for the elderly on the block (I stopped at the houses anyway just to make sure everybody was on board). I walked for 3.75 hours; between a wonderful woman that teaches in middle school there in W-S and myself, I think we hit 118 doors.

We came across people that had already volunteered, had canvassed their own blocks or bring food to the headquarters for the volunteers.

It was really, really inspiring to meet all these people that are invested and involved. I'll be calling my canvasing partner tomorrow night (I hope she won't mind if it's late) when NC is called for Obama (that's my hope) to celebrate.

Also met a woman in NC from GA (where I am) that had been to KY AND Indiana last week and came running to NC to canvas some more. We will keep in touch so in the GE we can maybe travel together to work on the campaign.

I'm really glad that I got out there to do my part and look forward to doing more during the GE.

Oregon is too far to travel, not sure about WV. Next, I guess I'll have to phone bank!

29. Canvassing always opens the eyes of the canvasser. You learn that a lot of your assumptions aren't
real. They are fed to you by media stereo types about what Americans think.

I did professional canvassing for 3 years, 50 weeks a year, 5 days a week, and I was raising money at the doors for statewide non-profit citizen groups mostly working on health care reform. This was back in 1990-1993.

So hitting the doors in small town Montana was exciting. No fund raising, just doing voter IDs, voter registration, early voting forms, and looking for volunteers for the campaign.

Nothing has changed. Most people are nice folks, even the Hillary supporters and the McCain voters I run into. Every time I find some one on my walking list who isn't supporting Obama, it helps because then we can take note their preference in the data base and not worry about them. It means we can get our voters to the polls.

Canvassing for Obama we don't try to talk anybody into switching their vote, we are just looking for our supporters and making sure they have the tools and information so they can support our candidate, and making sure we know who our voters are so we can get them voted.

Glad to hear you had an interesting, fun and informative time talking to your fellow Americans. It's no where near as scary as people think before they actually try it.

34. Oh I definitely agree. I went into this thing with one perception and came out totally changed.
It's also *very* difficult to hear about the struggles of hard-working fellow citizens.

I don't know if it was just the area I was targetting, but I ran into very few Hillary supporters and more Obama or McCain supporters (maybe because I was working from a list of Independents). I never tried to change anyone's mind. Mostly I just listened and made sure that they had the correct polling information. A few locations had changed and people thanked us for the cards we gave them with the information on their new polling place.

The Obama team has done a wonderful job with mobilizing early voters in Gary, IN.

40. I hear you about people's stories. Canvassing on health care reform especially,
I used to hear horror stories every evening.

People who's insurance companies dumped them when they got sick, people in the process of losing their homes, people losing their business because a spouse got sick.
It was an education. And it didn't seem to matter much how they politically self identified. It's a problem that effects everyone.

For Obama I'm working Dem, leaning Dem, and independent lists. I'm canvassing a semi rural county with a few small and very small towns.

I think I'll do phones through the Obama website tomorrow, with the election on Tuesday. Then after Tuesday, I can get back to local stuff. We have until June 3rd. I want to put my efforts into where it's most needed and I think that's either NC or IN for the next couple of days.

I live down in Morgan county and I voted Saturday, they seemed to have everything very organized there. I asked the Democratic judge how things were going, if there were any problems and she told me that turn out was incredibly heavy for early voting, and a majority were asking for the Democratic ballot. I thought that was kind of funny considering how blue our county is, and she told me that people were very outspoken on who they were voting for, Hillary was by far the leader in people who announced who they voted for.

I'm in Kokomo, our Obama headquarters is now starting to get volunteers from PA & OH coming in for this weekends final drive. If I heard "I can't believe how nice people are here" once, I heard it a dozen times. I told them that it's "Hoosier Hospitality". I've got some great stories to tell as well from the canvassing, we're truly making a difference. I talked w/ a Vietnam Vet today that told me just how much McCain has been screwing them over through the years. He told me he had already voted early for Obama. It's truly been an amazing month here. Tomorrow night in Indy is gonna be great! Thanx again for your help!!

38. Oh, dear Tatiana!
Re the paragraph in which you wrote, "I have to say I have never felt so connected, so bonded through shared experiences as I have these past couple of weeks", I had exactly the same reaction when I went down to TX for a few days to help out before that primary/caucus. I found myself -a middle aged white woman- assigned to canvass homes in very racially diverse neighborhoods. Of course that was before the Wright saga but still, I was struck by just the same things as you were. I heard the same shared concerns and worries that mirrored my own. It was very eye-opening for me and I ended up being so thankful to have a candidate that made that experience so fulfilling.

I was so proud to be there, to be a part of it.

On the day of, we did visibility at a polling place in a very economically oppressed area. I'll never forget one young man riding his bike past me on his way to vote. Without turning his head he spoke, just loud enough for me to hear: "Yes we can". It was something.

76. That guy was a hoot! He gave new meaning to the phrase "keepin it real."
He also offered me a Marlboro, which I naughtily accepted.

I hadn't met one racist person all day and I was sure that, as my final stop, he'd be it. But he wasn't. He was very insightful in a folksy, common-sense sort of way. He's waiting to have a knee replacement operation. He has a definite limp and has been on the list for the past 2 years to get this operation. I was really surprised that he admitted to voting for Bush TWICE, and it wasn't until I was driving back home to IL that the real meaning of his comment hit me. He was saying that mistakes can happen to the best of us. We learn from them and move on.

I thought it was a good attitude to have.

58. Please believe me, YES YOU CAN DO IT!
I was very tempted to go to Indianapolis and walk among folks that looked at sounded just like me. But that would have been the easy way out and I knew it.

I had a bad (racist) experience in Fort Wayne during my college years. I was very reluctant to go back to that town, but I felt like I had to confront my fears. Maybe I allowed that bad experience to cloud my overall view. Maybe Fort Wayne has changed. I don't know. What I do know is that the people I visited with were warm, caring, wonderful individuals who I would welcome in my own home.

Even red-staters have problems. Even red-staters are suffering. Even red-staters need to know that there is someone who cares and who is working to change things in this country.

Good luck!

So many people are "worried" about Obama's chances in the GE well hell if you got Republicans urging other republicans to cross over to slow Obama down it shows that THEY know they are in trouble facing Obama. They have no plan and no archive and the best they can do is Wright which is getting so tired now.

65. i had a great weekend in indianapolis
didn't find a single hillary supporter. lots of folks thrilled with obama, and many that were a little more resigned, and just hungry for something completely different.
one thing that struck me, tho. the volunteers that i met were tired. it wasn't really a joyful battle like ohio. obviously, we all knew we were out there pounding the pavement, even tho we had really already won. but my point being, i can imagine what it is like in the hillary camp.

71. Oh yes, we were bone tired.
I have been to Fort Wayne, Gary, Hammond, Terre Haute, and Anderson. That is a hell of a lot of walking.

This also wasn't as much fun as Wisconsin. Wisconsin had an air of excitement. This is more like... a grind. We're trying to grind out this victory.

I was going to go to Indianapolis, but at the last minute decided to go visit other places in Indiana. I found two Hillary supporters, but the majority were Obama or McCain supporters. Obama's base is very strong in Indianapolis and NW Indiana, as well as the near border cities like Terre Haute. It is the rural areas that concern me.

We need a massive turnout in Indianapolis, followed by strong showings in towns like Gary, Fort Wayne, and Bloomington. I think we can do it. I think if we get all of our people out, we will win this thing.

I wasn't so sure before.

Thanks so much for your hard work!

a grind, yes, exactly. but grind we will. only sorry that i was not able to stay on. his o-ness will be there tomorrow night. i really wanted to stay.
i talked to a peace activist from terra haute, and she was very sad that so many supported hillary. maybe her 'obliterate' comment will sway some that are on the fence there. it was an interesting conversation. our phone call had started out about something else, but since i am from chicago, she asked my about him. she ran through many of the talking points. she knew they smelled funny, but didn't know the truth. we talked a long time, and she was grateful that she could feel good about her vote.

the good news is that returns will come in early on tuesday. which, btw, what the hell? polls close at 6pm? i think they don't really like the voters too much there in indiana.

75. Thank you for your hard work in canvassing for Sen. Obama
... and thanks for sharing your experience with us. It's uplifting to hear that the American public is not as stupid as the media likes to portray.

I saw this poll today that further cheered me up:

Most approve of Obama’s handling of Wright situation, poll shows

The Associated Press
WASHINGTON — Most voters think Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has done a good job handling the controversy surrounding his longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, according to a poll released Sunday.
In a CBS News/New York Times poll, 60 percent of voters — and 68 percent of Democratic primary voters — said they approved of the way Obama handled the situation.
At a press conference in Washington on April 28, Wright praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and reiterated his beliefs that that the U.S. government may have developed the AIDS virus to infect the black community and that it had invited the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Obama denounced the remarks the next day.
Three-quarters of voters polled said Wright’s statements had not changed their opinion of Obama.
A majority of those polled — 56 percent — said the news media have spent too much time covering the controversy.
The poll was conducted among a random sample of 671 adults, including 283 Democratic primary voters, from May 1-3. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points for the whole group, plus or minus 5 percentage points for the Democrats.

98. I've had the same response out here in Oregon after canvassing for two days.
Most of the people were undecided (because they hadn't really thought about it) but after talking to them for several minutes most of them didn't take issue with Rev. Wright and were very tired of the news. Non of these people had access to the internet so the news was all they had. They wanted to believe Obama was real. Most of them couldn't stand Clinton for a variety of reasons. I did have a few the first day who thought Obama was Muslim and one lady who liked everything about him except won't vote for him because he doesn't put his hand on his heart.... One man was going to wait until the fall to vote for McCain so I brought up the war and then he realized that that was maybe a bad idea because he wants out of that. These were mainly very old couples or very young with lots of kids. I think in the end they will make the right choice. Conversation is great while canvassing so if you have a chance to do it it is worth it!

I live and work in Metro Indy and have noticed approximately 7 Obama yard signs for every 1 Clinton sign.
Same with bumper stickers.

And it wasn't until this morning that I saw my first McCain yard sign.

I'm thinking that's a hint of which way tomorrow may go, despite the media calling it "too close to call"??

104. I think it's close in the sense that there is an open primary.
So some of the Repukes who support McCain are going to ask for a Democratic ballot so they can vote for Clinton. I heard a couple of Repukes at a VFW hall talking about this.

We will need overwhelming support in our strongholds to overcome this.

107. Thanks for canvassing. I challenge every DUer to canvass 300 households
between July and November of this year. It isn't difficult. 300 is not really that many. You can canvass after work during the summer months -- and on weekends. Just print out brochures from the internet or get them from your candidate's headquarters. Knocking on doors is the best way to win elections. You may be able to get a list of the Democratic voters in your precinct or in the precinct you choose to walk. You will make many new friends.

125. Awesome, people like you are lifting Obama up, and that will allow this

127. Good work. Good news, too, that they are seeing through the media
That one person said it exactly right. The media wants ratings, not to inform, and they think if they make it a "soap opera" more people will watch their "coverage."
