Poll question: Holy Catfish! We Got Us $30! It's MAD Money!
Where do you think the magic money comes from, this $30 we will all save, if we take a pleasant Hawaiian holiday from our federal gasoline tax?

As I carefully dip my big toe, only on my left foot, into the feted cesspool that has become GD-Primaries, I ask those who support this harebrained idea if they have a clue where that mystery money is coming from?

And George Washington was involved in a failed lottery in 1768, here is an image of the ticket with his signature right on it

Interestingly the single ticket today is worth more multifold as a collectors item than the whole lottery raised.

36. Same as today a large sum for a low purchase, but Alexander Hamilton put it best, set the precedence
Edited on Mon May-05-08 10:18 PM by Boz
Alexander Hamilton wrote that lotteries should be kept simple, and that, "Everybody...will be willing to hazard a trifling sum for the chance of considerable gain...and would prefer a small chance of winning a great deal to a great chance of winning little."

This was written when the Continental Congresses was discussing use of Lotteries to raise money to support the Colonial Army at the outset of the Revolutionary War which it later moved to do.

15. Sadly, the talking heads on MSNBC this morning..
the ever compassionate Pat Buchanan and his side-kick rational JOe Scarborough
were demeaning Obamba's rational for not supporting the "Gas tax vacation'
by saying "$30 is a lot of money for working class people..."
(it grates on my nerves that these two are the spokemen for
'working class.')

Idiots. If someone gave you $30 outright, that's enough for one half tank of gas.

The kicker is the $30 is from 3 months of the summer,
so it's $10 per month, or approximately 30 cents a day. Big money.

NO mention of the result of omitting the gas tax... loss of road crew jobs,
loss of road and bridge repairs...

I just cannot fathom someone being so uninformed that they would "sell" their vote for a half tank of gas...but then republicans have been selling their votes for years on bullshit promises that never delivered..

It's his fault and the fault of his supporters who turned it into a political football. Had he chosen to handle itbdifferently, it could have happened. But that's not how it panned out. So you're right, it isn't going to happen. So go ahead and joke about it some more now while people choose between buying gas or food. Revel in it.

43. OK. once again. Why isn't there any bill? Because Obama, along with all of his supporters
want to turn this into a political football. The idea has the support of both Hillary Clinton and John McCain. It would be doable if Obama was on board but he's not. So, I'll ask again, what is Obama's plan for providing immediate relief to poor people struggling with the hyper-inflated gas prices?

45. No. You are incorrect.
There's no bill because nobody has bothered to write one. You can't keep blaming Obama for something that never happened. The fact that McCain also supports this, while not inspiring any confidence from me, should mean that a bill of this nature (when someone bothers to submit it), should get enough congressional support to be veto-proof. Yet, there's no bill. Only talk.

If anyone is to blame, it's the people who support this idea but haven't managed to try to get it off the ground. You can't blame Obama for everything. (Well, maybe YOU can, but that doesn't reinvent reality.)

as it stands now, Obama and his supporters are the obstructionists. they want to play political fopotball rather than provide relief to the working poor who really are being ruined by hyper-inflated gas prices. I don't see any other way to see it. Do you believe that hyper-inflated gas prices are seriously hurting the working poor? I do. What does Obama propose to do about it?

The $$$ will come from your own pocket after the oil companies raise the price due to the demand caused by the lower prices. Meanwhile, highway maintenance and construction workers don't work. So, Hillary's telling us to give ourselves $30. Brilliant!

Meanwhile, we're supposed to believe that she can make this happen before she's elected to anything - including the Democratic nomination. It's the most obvious empty pander I've seen. DOA before its birth.
