1. McCain's so old, he wears flip-flops. Or crocs.
Whichever.

2. the same reason conservatives don't like him... he's a big flip flopper
I imagine many of his views will be custom-made for this election, some opposing what he previously had

10. I don't think the flip-flop was bad. That he originally voted against it: VERY BAD.

4. I think conservative Repugs are not happy that he is their candidate.
Whether they will vote for him, write in their candidate or stay home remains to be seen, but they don't think he is a good candidate at all. For instance, many see illegal immigration as a BIG issue, and don't like McCain's stance.

11. From a Small State, 100-Year War
McCain is a study in contradictions. He's probably in the right job in the Senate -- i.e., voting slavishly for programs proposed by conservative men with broader vision than he. He's not a strong speaker. He's from a small state.

And that 100-Year War remark is AT LEAST as stupid as Fritz Mondale's "I'm gonna raise your taxes."

15. He seems averse to learning and retaining new information.
This may correlate with his age, but it's not fair to his peers to make assumptions about causality.

... an idea that now strikes as much fear in the hearts of Republican voters as it does Democrats.

17. He's not a "War Hero"
he never saved his platoon, threw himself on a grenade(too bad) or anything heroic. We should all have the purple heart bandaids. He got shot down by the NVA and got thrown in the Hilton, how does that make him a hero? Remember what Coulter said about Max Cleland, if he's no hero McNuts sure ain't.

20. He's old and admitted to not knowing much about the economy, one of the two most important perceived
...issues.

The 100 years thing won't ring well in debates when most Americans disapprove of the war. (I realize it was taken out of context; regardless, it won't ring well with people and it's a weakness)

The Bush endorsement will obviously make people think, especially when he is running for "Bush's 3rd term."

he'll have trouble defining what "defeat" is in iraq because he can't define what "victory" will mean or a cogent plan to arrive at this hypothetical position more than bush has. Also let's face it, he's not a terrible strong campaigner. He was in a field where, one of the candidates had inherent distrust from some of the evangelicals due to the fact that even though he had faith, it wasn't THEIR faith (romney). The one who DID have "their" faith (huckabee) was so reviled by the rush limbaugh types because of his "liberal-like" tendancies on environment, immigration, and spending. The potential "savior" fred thompson, basically slept walked through his campaign and had a paucity of specifics that would even make Bob Dole look like Hillary clinton in comparison to him. Finally, you have Ghouliani, who had the highest money/delegate ration in perhaps the history of modern politics. Despite all of this, his campaign almost STILL went broke. But he was able to gain momentum from NH(where he had a dramatically favorable demographic) and was able to ride the winner-take-all system the rest of the way.

He does however have the long admiration of many in the MSM, and his service was beyond reproach, but I think obama can effectively cast his "regan-turn" to "small-government"/ownership society as the "you're on your own society" that isn't much different than what caused the housing crisis, or providing relief for the un-insured.

I have another post though, if you're interested in reading it, that discusses how McCain might try to frame his "advantages"
