Obama is a really fantastic speaker.
If Clinton wins the nomination, she should offer him a position as Sec. of State or U.N. ambassador. I know his supporters refuse to support him as VP, but perhaps they'd soften their stance a bit if he put his charm to good use as the America's official spokesperson. His kind of charisma could do wonders for repairing the damage that Dubya has done to our foreign image.

Just a thought on this lovely Tuesday morning. :hi:

1. he'll be fantastic when he is president, i agree.!!!
seeing as he is in a almost insurmountable lead right now, there is no sense in me participating in the "we'll let him have the VP or SOS slot."

Reminds me of the cartoon where Obama is being inaugurated and Hillary is on Bills shoulder in the audience taking the oath of office as tho she had won!

2. I honestly don't see it.
When he's reading from the Teleprompter he does okay. When he's speaking extemporaneously, he stumbles and mumbles continually. So I don't get it.

3. Me neither
I also have a hard time with anything that smacks of religion, and his cadences and intonation attempt to mimic churchifying at its worst. He starts well, but then he gets wonky, and the falling inflections and verbal static, coupled with the casual low-energy just leaves me blah.

The enthusiasm about this guy by the stalwarts is near-religious in its absolute adulation, and that also puts me off. For sheer speaking, I can't really even listen to him anymore due to the religious-sounding hucksterism and the vague and wispy images of a Hallmark Card future.

When interviewed, on the other hand, he seems quite pleasant and modulated.

I hear that his core supporters are going to start selling his feces as room freshening potpourri soon, too...

8. I get the impression the Obamamaniacs never heard anyone talk in public before.
How anyone can think of Obama as a great orator is beyond me.

On stage, without a teleprompter, or a memorized speech, he's more often than not a verbal stumblebum. More "umms, uhhhs" and uncomfortable pauses than I've ever heard from any public speakier. And the churchified hucksterism is a complete turnoff.

10. I'd like to see a video of him speaking....
...years ago before this candidacy. Did he change his speaking, as did W?

11. I don't think he ever affected that southern baptist preacher inflection before this campaign.

14. if that is the case, then I want no part of this.
Because to affect a speaking style in order to evoke someone else is the height of cynical politics.

15. He's trying to come off as the second coming of MLK.
Edited on Tue May-06-08 11:46 AM by Seabiscuit
Actually, I don't recall hearing that phony southern preacher imitation until after he won Iowa. It may have begun during the campaign for South Carolina.

He's been positing himself as the "Dream" MLK spoke of in the "I have a dream" speech.

17. I didn't want to say that.
But the political advantage of sounding like MLK would be priceless.

12. That might help improve the smell coming from your post
And people question why some Obama supporters feel justified in making fun of Hillary's face :)

4. upside... if Clinton is nominated we can put a progressive in her Senate Seat
and we need Obama where he is...if he's not POTUS

The historic significance of a progressive, African-American Senator is under-valued

5. I'm all for him being VP if Clinton is the nominee
It's the only way I'd have any enthusiasm if she were the nominee and would not have to force myself to vote for her.

9. He's one of the best speakers, no doubt
reminiscent of Martin Luther King. It really helps a candidate being so fluent.
