My 18 year old son voted today for the first time and got a standing ovation at the polls!
I have to admit, corny or not, it actually choked me up a little to see people cheering and applauding for him after his very first vote!

Everyone thanked him and shook his hand. I don't think he was expecting that. I'm so happy to see such support for our young folks coming out in record numbers to have their voices heard.

That is all.

Carry on. :)

15. It's great, isn't it
My daughter will be voting in November also for the first time. I remember taking her to the polls when she was very young and always telling her it was her right and responsibility to vote. The poll workers were great. They used to give her an I Voted sticker.

24. That's how my mother raised 3 voters!
I still remember trying to sneak a peek at my mother voting from underneath the curtain! Funny thing is, mom and dad are conservatives, and raised 3 liberals! Bwahaha. My mom still wonders how she managed that. But, back then she was an independent. One of my first memories of political talk in our household was of my mother and father arguing over Reagan and Anderson.

Took my 14 year old son to the caucuses this year. He had a blast and I thought HE was going to stand up and make a case for Obama. After I made my case, he says "Mom! You did good!" This is the kid whose teacher have always told me that he was going to be president or an actor. He's decided on comedian. Whew!

14. He shouldn't be
It's a right of passage as an American, as important as your first car, love, drink, job, etc. Also it's not one everyone chooses to experience. Your son is miles ahead of any of his apathetic friends who didn't vote for their first time at 18.

21. Well all the attention made him blush, but at the same time drove home just how important
his involvement in the process is! I'm so happy that he was as eager to get involved as he has been. I hope it rubs off on some of his friends!

7. That's a great story
It chokes me up also.

I remember when I first voted. At that time you can register and vote on election day at your precinct. When I told them I wanted to register and vote one of the elderly poll workers gave me a hug and the other ladies were also happy and congratulated me.

It's probably corny but it's one of the best tidbits I have read in a long, long time. This aging boomer is thrilled our young people getting involved in the political process.

19. I love stories like this.
It makes me hopeful that some people still 'get it' in our society.

Thank you for posting this, and please let your son know that we're all proud of him - so many people blow off this crucial responsibility these days, and I'm glad to hear about a young person who cares enough to show up on election day.

Congratulations to you and your son
You must be so proud. My oldest is only 13. But he went to the Obama rally with me (in Dallas). I was so proud of him just for his interest. He was moved to tears by Obama's speech and the other adults were beaming at him and so proud with me. It literally brings a tear to my eye to read your post. We must be doing something right with our kids.

28. Good for him and for you!
We should notice young voters when they step up and come out to vote. He deserves to be applauded for this. People are quick to blame "kids" for so many things. It is heartening to see your son get a "atta boy" from others for participating in our democracy.

:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

(My 79 year old mother still manages to make it to the poll, even though it has gotten harder and harder to wait in the lines. I have her an "atta girl" for going and waiting and not leaving until her voice was heard.)

32. Did You Take Your Son
as a kid to vote with you? I did every time and when he was 4 in 1992, I grabbed him from preschool and we went to see Bill Clinton speak, in 04 he saw Kerry, Edwards - but he was away at college when Obama was here pre-caucus. Finally he will be able to vote this year, but won't see the candidate - unless....he volunteers for DNC convention and somehow, someway....nah....

35. I've taken all four of my children with me to vote over the years.
We went to see both Clinton and Obama speak here last month. We've watched most of the debates together.

We try not to dwell too much on politics in our house, but my boys are 16, 17 and 18 and they have a pretty good grasp on the issues that are important to them. My 18 year old has been looking forward to voting today for months. I'm glad he will be able to remember it in such a positive way.

You never know about the convention; that would be awesomse!

:)
