After much thought, I have decided to support Barack Obama once again
Edited on Tue May-06-08 09:46 AM by Tropics_Dude83
This gas tax pander was just too much for me. Also, I find the article recently written by the weekly standard that was flattering to her and Rush Limbaugh's operation chaos and supportive words for Hillary just recently disturbing as well. The right seems to want her to win the nomination. Also, Bill Clinton continues to appall me. A few days ago he said "are we going to decide our nominee by caucuses and undemocratic votes-I don't think so" or something like that. I do not like his criticims of the proccess. I've also read that Hillary Clinton has gone to Florida and personally launched a campagin against the DNC. Our own party's apparatus.

I was ready to put all of this aside because I had such grave concerns about Senator Obama's electability, was personally let down by the Wright affair and was impressed with Hillary's grasp of the hispanic, female, and working class vote even against John Mccain in the polls.

However, my heart isn't in supporting her. Senator Obama's appeal to young people, his refusal to pander by offering a quick gas tax holiday solution and his appeal to our hopes rather than our fears is what we need to see in a president. I was greatly impressed by his interview on Meet The Press on Sunday as well. Obama's extraordinary appeal to young people, african americans, first time voters, and fundraising prowess are something to behold. Also, he has honesty and trustworthines that we haven't seen in a president in quite sometime. Maybe the fact that I'm young also leads me back into his camp. His ability to bridge the partisan divide is also something that the U.S. desperately needs. As far as his electability issues, I am counting on a successful convention where he re-introduces himself to the nation to handle that. His VP selection should make the electoral college map better as well.

So, in spite of my fear of what the GOP freak show could do to him and despite of my disapproval of the way that he has handled Wright, I must support him. In the end, what draws me to him is greater than what draws me away from him. Also, even when my head was with Hillary, my heart had never left him. If I were to support Hillary Clinton, it would be a vote driven out of fear and also out of listening to too much media coverage swooning over her.

I am proud to support Senator Barack Obama for the presidency of the U.S. I hope that his supporters will welcome me back into the fold:). This time for good. Plus, I'm not as stressed out now as I have been earlier this year so I won't give you whiplash again. LOL. Onto a larger than expected victory in North Carolina and a close contest in Indiana!

2. Yay! Welcome back!
I knew you liked Obama better in your heart, and I am glad to see you come back to us. Call me crazy, but I am feeling more optimistic today than I have for a while...I feel like things might be shifting back our way at least a little bit.

6. There was no "pander"
Yes, Obama called it "phony" and a "gimmick" - but that proves nothing. In fact, calling it a pander plays exactly into the Obama campaign's assaults on Clinton's character - constantly calling Hillary dishonest, manipulative, etc.

Stiglitz signed a statement condemning it. Hopefully you know who Stiglitz is.

38. If you truly can't see that the reverse of what you say is true...
then you really need to step back and take a good look. It is a HUGE, empty, base pander. The Clintons have no respect for the people whose votes they are after. They never have.

48. And today she puts the cherry on top....
Now that she's garnered whatever votes she can with the gesture, she admits that it's not going to happen. What did she learn in the last 24 - 48 hours that changed her mind? Some new revelation about the way legislation, the U.S. Congress or the principles of economics work? No, she'd just gotten all the mileage out of the issue she could and wanted to start doing the damage control just in case she was ever held to account for the debacle.

11. After voting for Hillary in the Jersey primary,
I have to say that I am very indecisive at this point in time.

It figures, after all the bitching I did (to myself) because Jersey was always one of the last in line, THIS YEAR is the one that I wish we were back to the way it was. I need more time, and maybe tonight will decide it for me- I don't know.

All I know is, this is the first prez primary that I can remember being honestly undecided who was the best person for the job.

23. Your room is just like you left it. We haven't changed a thing.
Welcome back.

Obama is definitely a flawed candidate, and I think that there are a lot of legitimate reasons to be skeptical about him, so your support of Hillary Clinton was certainly understandable. I know quite a few people supporting her, and they all have valid concerns about Obama. That's not something I can really argue with.

But stuff like Obama's refusal to jump on the gas tax bandwagon is why I can support him, in spite of his inexperience and other flaws. I think we've needed someone to come on the scene for a long time who calls it bullshit when it's bullshit. We've needed someone who speaks to us like we're adults. We've needed someone whose election constitutes a 100% repudiation of the last eight years of Bush. The fact that Obama is a legal scholar goes a long way toward me feeling like he's uniquely qualified to set in motion the restoration of the constitution. There are many good reasons to vote for him, despite his flaws, in my opinion.

Anyway, welcome back.

er, I mean Tropics_Dude83.:hi: Long before all this nonsense started, there was just the speculation that Hillary would run. At the time I thought "Hell, why not? THAT would make freeper heads explode. I'd love to see a Clinton in the White House again." When the primaries started, I was supporting Edwards but thought it'd still be a gas if Hillary got it. Then she started acting more and more like everything we used to dislike here at DU. We have fought against the right wing from the beginning. Now she not only embraces those who have no agenda but to destroy her she acts and campaigns like them too. That's why I chose to support Obama instead. Hope instead of Fear.

39. I don't know what to make of these switches.
Some of them seem like game-playing to me, I dunno.

When someone goes from one side to the other and commences with insults and slams that they'd been defending to that point, I get a little suspicious.

Not saying the OP is doing this, but there are some here that went from hammering one candidate to hammering the other without so much as an eye-blink.

Hopefully very soon Obama will be able to concentrate exclusively on the GE and defeating McCain. Don't get worried when the publicans break out the 527 smears, they probably already had their swift-boat ads against Clinton already written and filmed--we're making them burn money. :) If we work together we can overcome whatever the pubs send our way.
