Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is calling on Republicans to seek "real change to avoid a real disaster" in the wake of another Democratic victory in a special election on Saturday.

In a letter to House Republicans posted on www.newt.org, Gingrich urges House leaders to call an “emergency meeting” of House Republicans to address what he describes as a “catastrophic collapse of trust in Republicans.”

that only THEY could represent the "people", combined with their insistance that God annointed their sorry asses to run the country, is part of what did them in big time. Couple that with their amazing ability to memorize right wing fantasy talking points, and they approached problems (and the world) in a complete state of denial. They denied facts, denied science, denied freedom of religion to others who weren't of their political activist megachurch, denied other Americans the right to citizenship, demonized anyone who wasn't a white gun-totin' male, blamed everyone but themselves whenever one of their policies or ideas didn't work. In short, it has been like having government run by the bullies of a middle-school playground. . .and people recognize just how out-of-touch that party is with the general public.

All of their sneering "da liberals" this and "da liberals" that has turned into a cartoon cliche - and claiming to be "conservative" is now akin to being labeled willfully ignorant - which they are. This country has been saturated by a cabal of crazy-ass angry white "conservative" men who know little about our history (and what they do know they try to rewrite), attack science in favor of politically-motivated "religious" dogma, and treat Americans hit with natural disasters as personally responsible (unless they are white Republicans in tornado-hit areas).

Every one of them needs to be run out of office - and out of town - on a rail.

He's dead-on.

I have voted Republican my entire life until the 2006 elections, when I voted a straight Democratic ticket. I voted the way I voted because of my dissatisfaction with this "war on terror". I know many Republicans that have been driven from the party over this war.

Republicans tend to be anti-welfare. Yet as all can plainly see, this "war" has become nothing but a trillion dollar police and welfare project for Iraqis and every corporation that can belly up to the war trough. Even the most anti-welfare Republican would rather see a trillion dollars in welfare spent on Americans before Iraqis. Especially when they keep hearing that they can't count on the Social Security they'll pay into all their lives.

Many Republicans are hawks and think bombing "America's Enemies" is a great idea. Those Republicans are pissed off because we aren't waging a war, we're engaged in nation building.

Republicans view their party as the party of Corporate Welfare. This made sense at first - you make a favorable environment for corporations and they in turn make jobs - the old "trickle down" theory. Except people are growing wise to the fact that the big corporations are now multi-national. They are no longer beholden to the welfare of the United States, and they are just as likely to create new jobs in India than here. So much for "trickle down".

Republicans used to view their party as the party of controlled spending. But as we have clearly seen, they are blowing money hand over fist on this boondoggle war. Many Republicans figure if we are going to blow money, we might as well let the Democrats blow it, as at least they'll blow it on Americans.

On top of this, many folks are becoming aware of the power grabs being made in the name of the "war on terror" just like have happened with the "war on drugs".

I no longer trust that the Republicans represent my interests. They still hold some loyalty with their stand on firearms and religion, but even those people are coming to the realization, as I did concerning firearms, that if we continue to hold fast on those issues we will have nothing else left of ourselves before much longer.

How much farther ahead of the game would be be if we had taken that trillion dollars and put it into developing new energy independence technologies? Think of all the jobs and industries that could be born right here in the United States, putting us at the forefront of the next generation of industry.

The Republicans pissed it away in an attempt to help line the pockets of the oil industry with the last few dollars of oil left in the world.

glad you're on the right side now.. I've been saying for years that we need to partner with True Conservatives, we all share the love for our country and want a brighter future.. These bands of corporate cuthroats are NOT really Republicans at all.. They're business pirates, radicals, evil, the worst parts of mankind all rolled into a slimy ball, and they've been planning all this for decades..

good for their souls (assuming they even have souls).

A DUer several years ago, while we were all working on the 2004 campaign, commented that what the wrong-wing needed very badly, with its fundamentalist Christianists and fascists and selfish, cheapskate assholes and pirates and cheats and warmongers and war profiteers, is "to get the snot beaten out of them." As in - only under such a hugely humiliating public repudiation might they even begin to see the light and repent, or at least try to rejoin the human race. Anything other than a resounding defeat, a smack upside the head and a kick in the teeth, won't get the message through their thick and wicked skulls. They have to get the snot beaten out of them.

Which would be fine by me. No one deserves it more.
