Superdelegate looks to past, chooses Obama

FRIENDSWOOD — John Patrick became enthralled with politics when he watched the Kennedy brothers on television during the turbulent 1960s.

He was too young to understand John F. Kennedy’s assassination, but it was the slain president’s memory that influenced one of the most important votes of his life.

Patrick, a 58-year-old Friendswood resident who is a Democratic Party superdelegate, decided to endorse Sen. Barack Obama.

Patrick, a 31-year member of the United Steelworkers and vice president of the Texas AFL-CIO, works full time on behalf of steelworkers from the union’s Baytown office. His support for Obama doesn’t reflect the views of the organizations, which haven’t made endorsements, he said.

The Baytown office represents a majority of steelworkers in Galveston County refineries and those across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Patrick, who initially supported Sen. John Edwards’ bid for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, said he thought Obama would enact policies that benefit laborers.

“In my mind, Obama went a little bit deeper into the problems,” he said.

“I had problems with the Clinton administration with (the North American Free Trade Agreement) and things of that nature.”

Patrick said his announcement, just before another round of state primaries, was intended to encourage other superdelegates to move forward with selecting a presidential nominee.

“It’s time to unite behind one candidate,” he said. “I think the path to the Democratic nomination is leading clearly toward Sen. Barack Obama.”

14. Yousa! You were there
Amazing. I'm originally from the Houston area - Clear Lake. I live up in Plano now. I always LOVED and still do LOVE Rep Jackson - Lee. I saw her trying to read some poetry our of a book over the boos. I really blame this one on the Clintons. I know she's her own woman and can make her own decision. But the Clintons got her support before the election began and exerted a lot of pressure on her to stick with them. She should change her support NOW to save her seat in the House! Otherwise, she will be TOAST like the Clintons.
