The Clinton Campaign is Brokeposted by John Nichols on 05/07/2008 @ 9:16pm

Don't misread the reports that Hillary Clinton has fronted her presidential campaign another $6.4 million.
This is not onward-to-victory money.
This is keep-the-lights-on money. And it has already been spent.
While Barack Obama's campaign remains flush with cash, Clinton's campaign is, like a lot of America, living from paycheck to paycheck.
And the paychecks are being signed by the candidate.
As with the $5 million Clinton contributed to her effort earlier this year, the latest checks from the candidate's personal account -- $1 million last week, another $425,000 on Monday -- were immediately cashed by the vendors who have always seen this particular campaign as a political gravy train.
Despite the fact that Clinton's camp reported raising a remarkable $10 million online after her muscular Pennsylvania primary win on April 22, her campaign never banked enough money to get ahead of its creditors going into Tuesday's Indiana and North Carolina primaries.
Only Clinton's cash kept her campaign on the air with television ads, and in the air jetting from airport tarmacs in Indiana to airport tarmacs in North Carolina.
She needed -- really, really needed -- wins in both states to raise the money to go on to critical contests in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, South Dakota, Montana and Puerto Rico.
Instead, she took a beating in North Carolina and barely escaped Indiana with a tie.
Now, Clinton's further behind than before in the delegate race.
She's fallen back in the popular-vote competition.
And, perhaps worst of all in this era on money-driven politics, her campaign is broke. .....(more)
