"I will not run for president or vice-president." -- Barack Obama
Edited on Thu May-08-08 01:21 PM by prodn2000
http://politicalwire.com/archives/2004/11/04/obama_will_not_run_in_2008.html

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/politics/blog/2006/01/obama_takes_the_russert_test.html

"I will serve out my full six-year term,"
Obama said, trying to explain his varying responses. "If you get asked enough, sooner or later you get weary."

So Russert tried one more time.

Obama finally declared: "I will not run for president or vice president."

And that was the conclusion of this round of the Russert test.

If you have evidence that Obama decided in 2004 that he was going to run for president, that would go a long way toward making it sound like a lie.

I'm sort of old school. If you're going to accuse someone of a lie without presenting relevant evidence, I think that's lousy behavior.

51. Here are questions from a poll conducted in 2003
Edited on Thu May-08-08 01:30 PM by SharonRB
I couldn't find the direct quote, but this certainly shows she said it.

http://www.maristpoll.marist.edu/nyspolls/030605HC.htm

Candidate Clinton in 2004?
· Nearly two-thirds of registered voters in New York State take Hillary Clinton at her word to serve her full six-year term in the U.S. Senate and not run for president in 2004. Only 25% of voters statewide think she will seek the presidency this time around. The number of New Yorkers who believe Senator Clinton will stick to her pledge has grown since her election in the fall of 2000. Initially, 51% thought she would serve her full term in the Senate and 40% thought she would enter the 2004 presidential sweepstakes.

· Although most Republican voters side with the majority on whether she will serve her full senate term, GOPers are less likely than Democrats to believe her.

Question Wording: Hillary Clinton has stated that she will serve her full six-year term in the U.S. Senate and not run for president in 2004. Do you think Hillary Clinton will run for president in 2004 or serve out her six-year term?

is that he happened to do it the same year your candidate decided to run. Any other time and the HRC supporters wouldn't be picking gnatshit out of pepper to find a new reason to be angry at him.

22. There's a lot of legitimate critiques of Obama and his campaign. I don't think this is one of them..
Obama made that statement years ago. And then, he changed his mind. If anything, I'd like to have a candidate who changes his mind based on how events unfold around him. I think we've had a little too much already of presidents who refuse to go another route despite all evidence to the contrary.

No no, I want someone who will NEVER change his/her mind!

Why in the hell would he want to announce his candidacy on Russert. There are better ways of going about such things, especially if even the idea of running was in its infancy. Better to quash the rumors before they start spiraling out of control so he could have time to build a healthy coalition.

Fail the "Russert Test" probably not asked by Russert at the time as well when he was running for Govenor of Arkansas in 1990?

The only thing this says to me is that in 2004 he wasn't thinking about running for President.

Was Hillary thinking about running in 2004?

Enough. Enough triangulation, calculation and equivocation. Enough clever straddling, enough not offending anyone This is not a Dick Morris election. Sen. Clinton is apparently incapable of taking a clear stand on the war in Iraq, and that alone is enough to disqualify her. Her failure to speak out on Terri Schiavo, not to mention that gross pandering on flag-burning, are just contemptible little dodges.

The recent death of Gene McCarthy reminded me of a lesson I spent a long, long time unlearning, so now I have to re-learn it. It's about political courage and heroes, and when a country is desperate for leadership. There are times when regular politics will not do, and this is one of those times. There are times a country is so tired of bull that only the truth can provide relief.

That's from October of 2007, with Russert referring to videotape from 2006 in which Obama repeated what he'd said in 2004, that he would "absolutely" serve out his full six year term, and not run for president.

He admitted in 2007 that he was reconsidering.

67. Simple. He didn't realize how fucked up DC was until he went there.
After 2 years in the US senate he was able to see what a disaster on wheels the current situation is. I have no problem with this; frankly I was surprised Hillary didn't run in 04 and it caused me to lose a lot of respect for her. I feel she waited until Bush was out of the way, rather than risk defeat by him.

I never, ever thought Kerry was going to win even though I wanted him to. He was just too old-fashioned looking to connect with voters in the way that Bush did. I don't blame him for that; he just doesn't have much personal charisma. If he had got elected, he'd have been on the defensive the whole time.

Meantime, when Barack Obama quotes King and speaks of the 'fierce urgency of now', to me that is not just some catch phrase, any more than my use of the phrase 'disaster on wheels'. This country is at risk of economic and social collapse (as in, nationwide riots) by 2015 if we don't get to work NOW on some of the major issues facing us.

Ever hear of it? Things change - and things need to change. HE IS THE CHANGE and HE GETS IT. Shame some of you don't - because I'm sure you are very comfortable in the "status quo". How's your economy? How's your mortgage? How are you dealing with gas prices? How are the 2 wars going for you?

And I'd bet if you took every single one of us and asked in 2004 where we saw ourselves today that most of us wouldn't be where we envisioned - for better or for worse. It's not a lie to not be able to predict the future. It's also not dishonest to seize your moment or your opportunity when it presents itself. Judging by his success, I'd say he was pretty intuitive to get in.

The point is, in case you really don't get it and are just being contrary to irritate people, that most people have no idea what they will be doing four years out. Anything could happen between now and then to change your course. I think he saw this as his moment and seized it. I don't see anything wrong with that.

And in any case, this is a path you don't want to go down. If we start saying politicians can't change their minds, then Hillary isn't allowed to withdraw her approval for the war, she really DID land under sniper fire in Bosnia, etc.

138. In 2006, Hillary's handlers implied she was only running for Senate
Lookie here!

Ms. Thomases, reached by phone just a few minutes ago, denied saying anything either explosive or new. "No, I did not say that. I didn't say her friends think she's running," she said. "I said, 'She's not running, she's running for the Senate, and that's what she's doing, period.' There was nothing awkward about it, because she's running for the senate, which something you all know. It was nothing new, I just repeated the same old."

http://www.observer.com/node/29540

I've talked to plenty of New Yorkers recently over the past year that were given the impression she just wanted to be Senator when she ran for a second term in 2006.

OK..she ran...and lost.

Next!

You'd have to have been completely out of touch to believe that HRC wasn't considering a pres run when she sought reelection in 2006. In fact, Bill Clintonspecifically was asked about this in September 2005 on Meet the Press and said that she shouldn't make any commitments about not running.

217. IF you had listened
which I seriously doubt some of you did - to what Michelle Obama has said

she begged Obama not to go into politics - she said - please - do anything else - I don't care - BUT NO POLITICS. I feel sure that this was a huge decision for his family - but based on his gut instinct - and the condition we find ourselves in as a country - I believe him when he said it was Dr. King's words that inspired him - that it is NOW that he needs to run - THE URGENCY OF NOW. I'm sure he really had to talk Michelle into it - and he also considered the lives of his children. Imagine that.

It seems like a perfectly acceptable explanation.

I am not a disrupter, however.

That was rude.

232. rudeness begets rudeness unfortunately
You posted provocative information. Do you have an opinion about what you posted or not? If not, then you are a disrupter. If you have an opinion, than state it and we can debate it, with no rudeness.

Changing his mind on whether to run for the nomination means he has no core sense of judgement.

If elected, he may appoint judges that will overturn Roe v. Wade, the graduated income tax, women's suffrage, and the repeal of Prohibition under the 21st Amendment. He'll outlaw smiling, motorcycles, movie nights, and play dates. He'll declare war on Finland, Micronesia, Zimbabwe, and the State of Denial. He'll launch a nuclear strike on Neptune. He'll make Smirnoff Ice the official alcholic beverage, change the national bird to the Canary, and replace the Star Spangled Banner with War's Low Rider. He'll issue the State of the Union in his pajamas. Move the Whitehouse to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Appoint Salman Rushdie to Secretary of the Interior, and Pierce Brosnan to Secretary of Defense. He'll force "cat people" to be "dog people", and vice versa, while "ferret people" will be deported to Costa Rica.

Fucking ferret lovers. Good riddance, I say.

He'll cancel the U.N.'s lease and force them to relocate to Butte, Montana. He'll also cancel NATO, the Jay Treaty, the Treaty of Tripoli, and the Treaty of Versailles. Impressionist paintings will be slashed and burned in favor of Surrealist art. Post-Modern studies will replace courses on economic theory in all the Ivy League schools. Matrilocalism will be enforced by gunpoint. All family trees must now be ambilineal. Human Flesh will find its way on the Food Group pyramid, but not before igneous rocks and whatever the hell they make Slim Jims out of. Everyone will be forced to by an X-Box 360 (who the hell cares that Blue Ray is more popular?!). He'll force Birnham Wood to come to Dunsinane. He'll break the Seventh Seal, enter the Forbidden City, and ask for the head of John the Baptist on a platter. He'll make the rivers will run red with the blood of the innocent, the dead will rise from their graves, and force Jupiter into the Seventh House. Whatever that means. I don't know exactly, but it's probably bad.

Gratuitous irony will be a capital offense. Uh oh.

201. Hillary should say this over and over and over in her campaign speeches.
I'm sure the public will be outraged.

Next.

223. Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee.
Dredging up this crap is just sour grapes. If enough people were actually bothered by this, he wouldn't be. But he is.

It's time to get on board the Democratic ship or get on McSame's.
