McCain will pick a female VP
To try to draw Democratic and Independent women who are disaffected with Clinton losing, to his campaign....if Obama doesn't pick a female VP.

Do you agree?

And is this why McCain is waiting until the GOP convention to announce his VP?

they never announce the VP this early. It's usually just a couple of weeks before the convention.

There's not that many GOP women for him to choose from - I don't think he'll go with Rice, and he's holding out the announcement to build up suspense.

Charlie Crist has been mentioned for McCain. Mitt Romney has been mentioned also and he has been on some of the networks this week touting how wonderful McCain is. Romney does have the economic background that McCain is admittedly lacking in.

McCain isn't going to play the "balance the ticket" game by bringing in a woman, or an easterner or an outside the beltway type yadda yadda yadda - he's not that type of guy. he won't play the conventional wisdom game. clinton picked gore in 92 (gore was bsaically considered a clone of clinton at the time) and it re-inforced his strengths.

mccain wil pick another military guy and you can bet that he'll at least ask colin powell. in the end it will be ridge.

24. I don't see it
Because McCain has been running right. He needs someone to back up his right-wing credentials and thus his base in the party more than he needs to pull in the center, IMHO. I see Mitt, which would be very, very, very, good for us.

Of course, if he picks Condi, that would be even better for us. First of all, we can really hammer them with the Iraq issue and the Freeper's heads will explode--her race and (rumors about?) her sexual orientation will be an huge issue for them, especially since they don't really trust McCain to begin with.

38. anything's possible if they feel desperate enough
But his options are pretty limited. He needs someone who won't offend the fundies, who is young enough to avoid the claims that the repubs are fielding a old fogey ticket, and with enough experience to leave him in the position where he can still attack Obama on experience grounds -- when you are 70 plus, you need to be able to make the case that your number two is ready to step in, especially if, as expected, Obama picks a running mate with more experience.

That doesn't leave McCain a lot of choices.

Mccain isn't going to get a large % of the black vote regardless of who his running mate is, and regardless of whom he's running against (unless maybe he were running against HRC; she's lost her standing in the AA community entirely)

Condi Rice would be a disaster for McCain anyway. She's not a politician and so isn't used to campaigning; she's too tied the Bush administration which McCain is trying to separate himself from...

74. He could, but if he does, it would not be a woman likely to appeal to
Clinton's supporters, because he'd have to select a woman compatible with the Right's view of womanhood.

A lot of people who would vote for Hillary Clinton on a ticket would not support Kay Bailey Hutchison, for example, since Kay Bailey is the Anti-Feminist queen of Texas.

Susan Collins? Olympia Snowe? I think indies might prefer Snowe to Collins, but the far Right donors hate them both.

In choosing a woman Clinton supporters might like, McCain would electrocute his support from his own party since his party HAS no women to left of say, Olympia Snowe.

And if Obama were to choose, for example, Kathleen Sebelius, McCain's choosing a woman would be a moot point, since Sebelius is in close alignment with Democratic Party planks.

76. He could pick Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani's a woman. Sometimes.
