"Do you know how difficult it is for black people to stand up and say we are the best at anything?"
"The Democratic Party has to know that African Americans are the core, African Americans have to be at the table and African Americans are going to be heard."

"When I wasn't taken seriously before Iowa, it was African Americans who said, 'No, he
does have a chance.' When I was counted out after New Hampshire, it was blacks from South Carolina who said, 'No, we're not finished yet.' When I was told I couldn't close the deal after Pennsylvania, it was you, black people, who helped me do it."

Hypothetical - My cousin Lil Punkin' is desperately trying to get a job on the Obama campaign as a speechwriter. She decided to write him a stump speech that will help him sew up the nomination and send it to the campaign, certain that if they like it and decide to use it, they'll give her a job. Here's an excerpt from the speech that she wrote for him.

Should she keep her day job or get ready to hit the road with Obama?

Discuss.

1. Day job. Not because she isn't right but because we are too backward.
I want that job, too, and I'm too backward, lol, to do it.

This is right now a very fine negotiation, Effie.

2. Obama is not running for president of black America.
And it's not just blacks who have gotten him this far. Sounds like Lil Punkin' doesn't quite get that.

4. What the Clintons are doing is shameful and the racial "resentments" will linger for years.
Shame on The Clintons for destroying our party: Pulling DEFEAT out of the jaws of victory ... thanks to the assistance of gutless SD and a compliant Corporate M$M.

5. Day job
the first I took Obama seriously was when a bunch of my son's friends, who had been working on a Senatorial campaign, said, at the end of the campaign: "I'm done with politics, I'm sick of it. I'm going to find another job UNLESS Obama runs."

My son said he didn't take them seriously that they wouldn't ever work on a campaign again but he was impressed at how much support there was for Obama at that level. These are professionals, go from campaign to campaign (and ski or surf in between).

he tried to get on as many of them are working for Obama but with no success. At least not at a "high" level which interested him the most.

8. Sorry, Effie. I don't think this one will play.
Obama has avoided the 'us vs. them' stance. If he hadn't, he would not be where he is. Further, I think he is interested in truly bringing the country together while not playing to either/any particular demographic.

Too, I don't know if her premise is entirely true. He did not automatically win the support of the black community as a whole - remember when some of us were saying "he's not black enough?" Obama has lots of support from all different segments of America, thank God. He cannot and IMO, does not, feel it is solely the black community that is supporting him.

Good luck to your cousin. :hi:

Just about everyone seems to agree that this would be ridiculous and worse for Obama to even think about saying this.

I guess my hypothetical cousin Lil Punkin won't get the gig. But perhaps she'll be welcomed with open arms by another campaign which seems to appreciate her style:

"Do you know how difficult it is for women to stand up and say we are the best at anything? The Democratic Party has to know that women are the core, women have to be at the table and women are going to be heard as we continue in these contests until they finally end.

"I’ve been counted out more than once. But thanks to all of you I’ve come back. When I was counted out in New Hampshire, it was the women of New Hampshire who came back and said, 'No, she’s not finished yet.’ When I was counted out before Super Tuesday it was women from California to Massachusetts who came and said 'No, we’re not finished yet.' When I was counted out before Ohio, before Indiana, we have always come back."
- Hillary Clinton, Remarks to a "Generations of Women for Hillary" fundraiser, Washington, DC, May 7, 2008

11. And that is precisely why she is losing and she doesn't even get it
Nor do her supporters.

Each and every one of the responders here see the above speech in the OP as singling out a particular segment of the population for special consideration. Obama includes every American in his plans for America. Hillary's plan is to single out women as somehow more special than everyone else. And she doesn't even get why this is so stupid.

Thanks, Effie. I really enjoy your posts.

Hillary's "white base" speech and is divisive rather than unifying. Your cousin ought to give it another try, though - she's obviously got some talent. (Did she really write it or is this solely for the purpose of illustrating Hillary's tactics?)

I don't believe in heroes

I have only one in my life time, and I was fortunate enough to meet him in person

He did this in a much more dangerous time for Black people in this country

He is black and he told the world he was the greatest, that is Muhammad Ali

Why is it ok for Ted Kennedy to take his primary race against Carter all the way to the Convention with only 1/3 of the delegates, but not Clinton?

26. You do realize that the Democratic nominee lost in 1980?
Right?

Right?

Bueller?

I have a feeling that in hindsight the part wishes that they'd managed to put a stop to that contest earlier.

It's too bad Senator Clinton didn't pay closer attention when they had the discussions of recent Democratic history.
