Oregon Demographics: White 90.5% Black 1.9% and Obama is heavily favored to win
Link http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/41000.html

I am getting sick and tired of Clinton playing this card, she cannot win and is doing all she can to ruin Obama and the Democratic party. We expect this from the GOP and it's unfortunate that Hillary is making them look good in comparison with her actions.

To all the Clinton folks who believe her bullshit racist remarks, take a good close look at Oregon. We are the final chapter in her campaign.

Since you are the final chapter, you get to turn the page.

On Edit: I'm actually surprised Obama's doing so well in Oregon.

The so-called "ghetto part" of Portland is 30% black... and people there
are scared of it.

And the Willamette Valley isn't a bastion of liberalism by any means.
it's sharply divided between moderate old-timers who reserve the right
to burn their fields in the summertime... ultra-liberal enviros with
wine presses and canoes in their garage... radical libertarians, and
(ahem) more than a few skinhead types... Last I checked only one of
these groups was in Obama's camp (and most of them aren't rich by any
means, which is why they moved to Oregon.)

5. I think when you compare white voters from state to state you find there is no such thing
as a "white America". There is little in common between Oregon whites and North Carolina whites politically. I love it when people think white voters are some kind of coordinated voting bloc.

50. O - now it stands for Obama
I thank my dear wife for helping me to move to Oregon. After 25 years in Texas I moved to Oregon last year. My wife is a west coast person and attended the U of O and softened me up with a couple of trips to Oregon and the Oregon coast over the last few years. When it came time to retire last year we decided to move to Eugene, home of many good things including my 2 year old grandson. Best decision ever. I must admit that it is nice to live in a neighborhood filled with Obama yard signs.

As for Texas - oh yeah - Obama won Texas also!!!!

She is rapidly losing support around the country and Obama stands ready to get WV to within 10. The lack of a huge win means her arguments are finished.

And then its just the last bit as the 20th leading to one of the biggest Clinton defeats in this primary season.

May 21 the smoke will clear and Obama will likely be the nominee. Otherwise the smoke will clear on the 3rd.

If we continue to work this has no chance in hell of going to the convention.

64. Frankly-as a transplant I was shocked(shocked I say) by the amount of racism up here
Edited on Sat May-10-08 08:50 AM by Boxerfan
I live in the Portland Metro area. It's not real obvious but it is there. Employers & others employ a soft racism as oposed to the more hostile variety commonly seen when I visited family in Houston way way back.

My Bat crazy "Born Again" Sister in law had never seen a colored person till she was in her late teens. She lived in Medford & aparentlty didn't travel a lot...There are less oportunities to see the stupidity of racism.

But by & large other than those beaten to a froth by the church or RW radio we are good honest folk & recognize that quality in Obama.

Obama is very popular here & I have no doubt he will take the state.

The only people who will switch from Hill to McBush are racists & project chaos clowns.

Oh-Just to add. I am a bit of a hard worker. I scrap cars-I'm a junkman! Best job I ever had-Killin cars. With metal prices my Boss is happy too...

68. I have to agree with that
I am a lifelong older Oregonian. And Oregon has a bit of a racist history that most people either don't know (I didn't until I got older) or don't want to think about. Mainly, the KKK was big here in the 1920s - even our legislature helped them out with some outrageously racist laws. It was evil stuff, not as bad as some other states perhaps, but it sucks to have that piece of baggage in your history.

I could tell a thousand stories of whites here who are racist (have some in my family tree); took me until law school to meet blacks who were comfortable enough to admit to being racists at some events/parties we attended (kind of stuff that Carol Simpson said on Larry King, and more). A law school buddy and me went to the movies (he black, I white) and while walking across the parking lot we got a few unfriendly stares (this was in the 90s, in Beaverton) and he started joking about here is my life - want to cause a scene and shake up the white folk? which we decided would be funny for just about the first 5 minutes...bright funny kind guy, near top of the class, went to work for a big firm after, and still there was attitude at the movie theater, things that I didn't get subjected to, but I saw that he did. Later, in my horse show world, there were little groups of flat out racist bastards who said stuff that you'd swear people never say nowdays - but they do once you know them, and they let their guard down. Stuff that makes you want to stick a fork in them. Both sides, black and white. I don't think Oregon is the worst as far as racism goes; but I can't say it doesn't exist at all.

That said, from everything I hear (and I live on both sides of the state), Oregon has given this some thought, and is for Obama - because most people aren't racist here. And Oregonians. while varied in politics and lifestyles, are united in one thing... nobody freaking tells an Oregonian how to think or how to vote. And skin pigment just isn't at the top of the list of qualifications for candidates for most people. We have an interesting independent streak about our politics (including our ballot initiatives, where we don't wait for the legislature to make laws, we just think up some ourselves and put it to the people straight away).

71. Oregon Is For Obama Because They're Not Racists?
Are there no other reasons to be for Obama, other than proving how enlightened the state is?

72. This is just a direct response to Hillary, that's all
I certainly believe it's because Oregonians think he's the right person for the job regardless of race.

81. Yes
that is exactly correct.

Ans the Hillary doctrine just isn't going to fly here, which is what I think important - ie, that she fall on her face for even attempting such crap.

74. Not what I said
Oregon is likely for Obama because of his policies and character. Because most voters here aren't racist, pigment isn't a voting issue.

Because most aren't racist here, appeals by Hillary to white voters based on race baiting won't be taken very seriously.

Because most Oregonians aren't racist, being "enlightened" or not "enlightened" is kind of an irrelevant thing.

More clear?

75. This Is What You Wrote:
That said, from everything I hear (and I live on both sides of the state), Oregon has given this some thought, and is for Obama - because most people aren't racist here.

79. Nothing personal
but when people parse things like this, and don't want to engage in a dialogue where they listen to the other side, I don't see the value of spending more time with it.

Oregonians for the most part are voting on issues - there is a way to read what I said that way, I even elaborated on it for you since you were unable to see it in what I wrote (and even what you quoted - understandable, since internet discussion often go that way), yet you still wish to hold onto a misunderstanding on your part, despite an attempt at clarification by me. You want it to read the way you said it, so those are your issues to resolve. This isn't win/lose for me, so not going to put a dog into that kind of hunt.

I am not much caring about changing people's dearly held views on pigment phobias - that was the younger me. I endorse anyone's choice to embrace the Hillary doctrine, even though I find it repulsive in my own life.

76. You have to understand that Hillary is in WV saying this. Will this sell in WV? I don't know. If
it does, then I would say that there is something wrong over all in WV.

77. Oregon??? Sheesh, the state of the most latte drinkers ever. They don't count.
They are not "working class" whites. Define to me what that means? Blue collar workers? I think there are some of those in Oregon.

82. Seriously, why do you think Oregonians are for Obama?
I was born in Oregon, have many (most) of my relatives there, and now live in California. I thought Obama would win California, and I was shocked by Hillary's win. Of course that was way back in the Fall. I don't think she would win here in CA now. But I wonder what the difference is between the two states. California has a much highter Hispanic population than Oregon and a significant Asian population as well. I know from talking to my Hispanic and Asian friends that Hillary was very popular with them in CA. Those groups are much smaller in Oregon. Still, I don't think that's the full explanation.

84. Oregon is one of the premiere latte liberal and white guilt states in the United States.
Edited on Sun May-11-08 12:46 AM by NJSecularist
It is no wonder why Obama is leading in the polls there. Latte liberal and white guilt voters are a major part of his voting bloc.
