Here's how I'd like to see the primaries work...
and probably the GE, too.

Initial caveat - implementation details are acknowledged and are not addressed, there are lots, I know.

The 'primary season' is declared, let's say Feb 1 to May 1. All registered Democrats get a stack of secure ballots linked to the voter registration rolls. You can vote by mail as often as you like between Feb 1 and May 1, but only the last vote you cast is counted. A rolling total for votes cast is maintained and published daily during the primary season. The total as of May 1 determines the nominee.

In the unlikely event that such a plan could get approved for the GE, the GE season could begin Sep 1 and run to Nov 1.

Just an idea....

1. stack of secure ballots - sounds like Publishers Clearinghouse
will Ed McMahon deliver the prize to the winner?

2. I had self-mailers in mind...
you know, the kind you fold up and drop into the mail box?

Heck, let us vote 20 times a day if we want to, but only the last one counts! Of course, it might be interesting to see how the votes change over the course of the season.

3. So if you vote multiple times a day, what happens if 2 differing votes arrive at the same time.
Also, are you personally prepared to assist in sort and counting this deluge of votes? Do you even work the polls currently?

4. Latest post mark counts.
If this were done in a single day it would be a mad house, no question, done over the course of three months I think it would be more manageable.

Also, note my prologue in the OP - I fully acknowledge the implementation problems.

And, yes, I've worked in polling places since the early 70's, east coast, mid-west, west coast and now in the inter-mountain west.

What's your cred, Fred?

5. Poll worker since 1982. That's why I dislike folks thinking up more work for me to do.

7. Then note that my idea puts you out of work.
It uses mail in ballots. You can stay home.

8. Just trying to make it easy :-).
This is a bow towards the 'Wisdom of Crowds' idea, it's not supposed to be hard.
