Obama CAN NOT pay off Clinton's debt per FEC rules.
According to FEC rules, Obama can not pay clinton's debt with money he has collected for his campaign up until now, or in the future.

He can hold fund raisers for her, or encourage his donors to fund her, but he can not use his primary, nor his GE funds to repay her debt.

So STFU about it, already.

6. Thanks for posting.
I and others have wondered if it was legal for Obama to pay off Hillary's debts and I missed the other postings of the legality of it, so thanks for posting.

7. Yes, I was wondering myself if Obama
will stoop to any lengths to buy his way into the White House.

Would offering to do fundraisers ad infinitum be the same equivalent?

12. You support a well-documented compulsive liar. Few still care about anything you say.
So, how much does it sting that Obama is now leading in all categories INCLUDING the SDs?

Edited on Sat May-10-08 10:17 PM by Dr_eldritch
because he's being a "stand up" guy with "principles" and "composure". Not once did he have the decency to engage in the proper use of fabrication, dissembly, and mischaracterizations!

That's just dirty, and Hillary would never stoop to that level!

"Documents shmocuments"...
You 'justifiably' self-righteous Obama folks need to get over yourselves and behave the way you are accused of behaving!

Has he actually even suggested doing this? Or are you just buying the hype?

Lemme guess...

8. Not trying to be rediculous here, but does anyone know the FEC rule that prevents this?
Why? 'Cause I've heard so much conflicting opinion on this in the last few days that just because Kos says you can't and Russert says you can, I'm not sure that one more post stating "FEC Rules prevent this" will convince me.

We know candidates used to do this. When exactly did the rule that prevents this get enacted?

worked in the past:

The Vilsack-Clinton Connection

By Jeff Zeleny

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton won’t know until the night of the Iowa caucuses whether the backing of Tom and Christie Vilsack, the state’s former governor and first lady, who formally announced today that they were endorsing her, will pay off. But Mr. Vilsack could reap benefits sooner.

Before ending his presidential bid on Feb. 23, Mr. Vilsack had accumulated a debt of about $430,000. The Clinton campaign has agreed to help erase at least some of that debt. A fund-raising appeal on his behalf could be landing in mailboxes of her donors soon.

McCain helps former rival retire debt

Published: April 14, 2008 at 1:17 PM

WASHINGTON, April 14 (UPI) -- Likely GOP presidential nominee John McCain wants to help former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani pay off his primary campaign debt, a McCain staff e-mail shows.

McCain manager Rick Davis has e-mailed the senator's top fundraisers asking that they help Giuliani retire the debt he incurred before dropping out of the Republican primary race, The Politico reported Monday.

"While this is an unusual request, it is extremely important for the McCain campaign and the party," Davis wrote. "We need to help Mayor Giuliani retire his debt as soon as possible so we can move forward with everyone spending 100 percent of their time helping to get John McCain in the White House.

The e-mail directs McCain donors to go to Giuliani's Web site to make their contributions.

In a report filed with the Federal Election Commission last month, the Giuliani campaign reported $4 million in cash and $3.1 million in debt.

18. Those were both fund raising appeals, not direct contributions by the candidate
Edited on Sat May-10-08 10:25 PM by IDemo
Asking the campaign's top fundraisers to help out with another candidate's debt is perfectly legal, and is obviously what would (or may) happen if Obama is inclined to help out Clinton. The campaign itself is limited to a $2000 contribution to another federal candidate, though.

Here is the actual FEC page on this - http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/contriblimits.shtml
