SNL threw Hillary under the bus, ran her over, backed it up and ran her over again!
Wow. . .this has got to hurt because as we all know the MSM will be running this clip OVER AND OVER again.
(I know there are a few threads but I wanted to get the fact that the MSM will run this clip over and over again in the OP)

Some key lines from "Hillary" as portrayed by Amy Poehler

"I'm a sore loser" and then she goes how she would not lose gracefully and wouldn't support him.

"My supporters are racist" (the crowd laughed and applauded)

"Unlike Senator Obama I have no ethical standards"

Edited on Sun May-11-08 07:04 AM by quantass
of course, they used it in a comedic way (never offensive). Now I wish they wouldnt be so up tight about using it...let the creativity flow with no restrictions i say. I notice alot of comedies in the past used it (not just SNL) e.g. Blazing Saddles, Airplane, etc and found how they used it really funny.

They just do what is timely with regards to their writing. Obama supporters just thought they supported her. Before too long they will be writing skits that may not make Obama look good. That is what they do. Even if he becomes the President, they will write skits pointing out his flaws. They are equal opportunity criticizers and everyone gets their turn.

Go bang some pots and pans outside the SNL studios. That'll teach them
Edited on Sat May-10-08 11:23 PM by Catherina
Let me be painfully blunt here. IF HILLARY SUPPORTERS HAD A HISTORY OF DENOUNCING RACIST COMMENTS RELATED TO THIS CAMPAIGN, SNL WOULDN'T HAVE ANY AMMUNITION FOR THIS JOKE. So congratulations to all the people who stayed silent, or worse, posted the most outrageous defenses for it trying to convince 21st century America those shameful comments didn't have the least hint of racism in them.

"Next, We'll See Him Run an Ad Saying: Vote For Me, I Don't Steal Cars." - Bill Clinton on Obama" It doesn't seem that funny now does it? I laughed my head off while spitting out watermelon seeds, NOT.

DU Obama supporters had nothing to do with that SNL skit. I'm flattered you think we're so powerful. SNL wrote that little skit all on their own based on their own real life observations.

It's comedy. Get over it before the resentment kills you. Hillary and Bill did this to themselves despite all the best intentioned advice from peopel who knew it wasn't a good idea.

62. I just don't get it Kahuna
The first post that drew me to DU was FrenchieCat's sad warning in January about the racist overtones of certain comments Bill was making. People poo-pooed it. I was flabbergasted and watched the dramatics determined not to jump in until one day when I couldn't take it the racism and all the Barack won't you buy your grandmama a new hut threads.

People were warned. Over and over again at street level and high-political level. But Mark Penn knew differently! And they not only continued but then tried to project it all on Obama. Here come's the backlash and it's not pretty. This is really dreadful. Tonight, I feel like an old woman who kept telling kids not to play with fire and am angry their parents said it was ok and now their house burned is burning down.

Thanks. I had to get that off my chest.

183. Right. Frenchie is my gurl..
Only she doesn't know it yet!

However, Frenchie, myself and many other DUers and others in the blogosphere noticed what was going on and pleaded for the clintonistas to stop it. Then Rep. Clyburn noticed what was going on and asked them to stop. They were like, no. We're going to keep doing what ever we want. Senator Kennedy pleaded with them to stop, and they were like, no. We're going to keep doing whatever we want. So, Kennedy came out for Obama as a signal for them to stop. Still they wouldn't do it. Then Kerry came out as a signal for them to stop. Still, they wouldn't do it. Many others came forward in support of Obama in an attempt to give them a signal that they were out of bounds. Still they would not listen.

The SDs have shown their displeasure with the dog-whistle attacks at every turn, and still they will not stop. Today, Obama has pulled even from a huge SD deficit into the lead. Still they won't stop. Since their only chance to win the nomination lies with the SDs, who they continue to alienate, there is only one conclusion one can draw. They really are not interested in the approval of the SDs at all. They want to destroy Obama and the Democratic party.

the Democratic Party is the most disheartening thing of all. I am having a hard time reconciling their behavior. I used to support Hillary but when I noticed how negative she was going I backed up and started paying more attention. At first I thought I was misunderstanding what she was saying but I quickly realized that she and Bill were seriously playing a dangerous game. They lost my support.

Since when is it acceptable for a campaign not to fold up and quit when they don't have the votes?

It is not just about that the pledged delegates anymore. There are superdelegates who have took head counts in the background, away from the media that are allowing Clinton to do her swan song, but Claire McCaskgill said the votes were in last week or the week before.

There is a reason that no one is standing Clintons' way to go through the next few primaries, but it should tell you something that all the elected leaders are giving her wide space.

Women want to be treated like women in the workplace AND rewarded like men when they accomplish things. There is NO WAY IN THIS COUNTRY that a male politician would have been given more breaks as Clinton has when she has said some treatment was UNFAIR and it was sexist.

First, women are not children.

At a little league game, when the game has already gone through several innings and the parents are ready to go home THERE IS ALWAYS that one child who keeps at it. When the last hit is made and the children are rounding the bases, that one child still thinks there is a chance. When the ball is caught in the outfield and the game ends, that one child is inconsolable. When the kids are forced to shake the other teams' hand at the end of the game, that one kid doesn't want to shake anyone's hand because it is SO UNFAIR. It takes a lot to explain to that child that sometimes life isn't fair even if that ONE CHILD played by the rules and had the best coach in the world.

Second, the parent is not the husband or spouse.

Having said all that, if McCain can accept an influx of people who think that the Democratic primary is unfair then you should think about this. He said Hamas supports and endorses Obama's candidacy. Reflect back on Farakahn, Farakahn, Farakahn.

Sound similar?

If McCain is the new black, then ask yourself why his response to Arianna Huffington's story that he didn't vote for Bush that his spokesman went out of his way to degrade her ability to report a story by calling her a diva and some other non helpful not so choice things in which most women would take offense.

Sound like the charges some women, not this woman, put forward with the way the Clinton campaign was being treated by the male media, the Clinton haters (which grew on the Democratic side of the aisle UNFORTUNATELY), and those ungrateful African Americans who chose not to support the First Black President's Wife?

It seems to me that when Hillary Clinton says her supporters are white and hardworking excluding any other race and any other working people, then it seems to me the comment was not only offensive but intentionally so.

Andrea Mitchell talked about the African American reporter who repeatedly asked the Clinton's campaign, how can your coalition be broad when it does not include AAs? She gave no response. She also did not come out and explain her comments about hardworking white voters.

If a Republican did have this CRAP, AAs would have FORCEFULLY protested AND would have asked for more than just apology, we would have tried to force the candidate out of public life. It is a double standard and it is deplorable.

Do I think that what she said was racist?

It sure wasn't inclusive, but it seems like inclusion is only important when it applied to women NOT JUST any woman either.

103. I agree he would never do that.
Ironically, that may have been one of the reasons the writers let loose on her. Shows like SNL want you to think they're very edgy and independent. The corollary is that they don't want you to think they're in the pocket of either candidate, even if they may go harder on one or the other on any given week. It probably irks them to think that something witty that they came up with in the writers' room will be served cold the next morning in some politician's talking points. Maybe the writers sat down and thought, "We can really let loose with this because Senator Obama's not the kind of candidate who will ruin it by trotting it out at every opportunity for the next five days."

Riddle me this, VFW, if you guys cared so much about the campaign of HRC, why is she constantly struggling for money? Obama's supporters have put their money where their mouths are. At this point, you guys offer very little in the way of debate...just snark and bile. The end can't come too soon.

116. President Kerry will probably be glad too, but hey, i'll grant you that the enthusiasm of O supporte
supporters is real, and many have contributed a lot of money to him. i'm afraid that since we hillary supporters are a little more 'realistic,' shall we say, we are less enthusiastic and less willing to spend money in a political system that most likely is not going to be experiencing the revolutionary, transformational reforms that O supporters believe will happen if he is elected. look, kucinich was my first choice; he is no longer in the race, because he would have posed a *real* threat to the establishment. Obama does not pose any threat; neither does hillary. i am a hill supporter not because i think she walks on water, like O folks think Obama does; i just think she's the better of the two candidates. and if you think i'm negative, it's because i've had it up to effing here with the nasty lies, slander, insults, race-baiting etc. that is constantly directed at hillary supporters in this forum. sorry, but i'm just not going to take it and say nothing about it. and yeah, i may get banned from DU, but you can't ban me and all the other voters you people have pissed off from the voting booth.

You're right, I can't ban you from DU or the voting booth, but rest assured that if you don't care about your kids & grandkids fighting a hundred years in Iraq, I certainly don't.

210. Can you point to where I said the Clintons are racist?
Being a racist, and racebaiting are two very different things. The Clintons are very blatantly opportunistic. They know what plays in certain areas of the country, and they use that to their advantage. More power to 'em.

And as an AA, the Clintons haven't done shit for me, personally. So, guilt trips don't work with me. What has become crystal clear, in this primary fight, is that the Clintons were very smart in building relationships with minorities to advance their own ambitions. Hopefully, like myself, other AA's have had their eyes opened to the truth, once and for all.

As for the rest of your nonsense, I'm not quite sure how the Clintons have been any more mistreated than any other candidate in this primary race. But you guys have really taken "victimhood" to new heights lately.

Why don't you take the advice that Bill & Hill offered Obama, after he was ambushed at that sham of an ABC "debate". I think it went something like..."if you can't stand the heat, blah..blah..blah."

I don't get how a smart woman can be so short sighted. She does these things, they work sometimes, and other times backfire and blow back. And its gotten to the point where she is understandably the butt of many jokes, with so much truth to them that it has become kind of dark humor to recite them.

But she still thinks what she is doing is being a "fighter". Hardly. If she keeps this up, she'll dig a hole so deep that none of us will ever be hearing seriously from the Clintons again.

Hillary's words and actions( such as the use of racist rhetoric to try to win at any cost when the math demonstrated she had nothing to gain for doing so. Her campaign actions are a direct cause of the hightened interest in who these people really are. Here's an example

http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/43/029.html

What one newspaper is saying about this subject http://news.scotsman.com/politics/Hillary39s-woes-take-their-toll.4071541.jp

But the battering his wife has taken in her losing battle with Barack Obama has threatened to change all that, with the 'brand' now under fire and the Clintons accused of using their good works as cover for making money and peddling influence.

It began in January with Bill's decision to wade in and help a campaign stunned by the unexpected phenomenon of Barackomania.

Breaking with the custom that former presidents do not take sides in nomination contests, Bill not only sided with his wife, but went into battle for her.

The plan backfired in spectacular fashion when he labeled Obama's opposition to the Iraq war as a "fairy tale".

And when he appeared to label Obama's appeal as limited to black voters only, the media christened him the campaign's "attack dog".

This image was reinforced by the sight of him staging angry confrontations with journalists. And then those journalists started to dig.

Already in 2007, the media had zeroed in on one of his top backers, data collection firm Info USA. The media reported that its chairman, Vin Gupta, is being sued by his shareholders for misspending company money after he paid Bill Clinton the equivalent of £400,000 for two years of unspecified consultancy work.

In January, the Wall Street Journal questioned another Bill Clinton consultancy contract, with US supermarket giant Yucaipa, claiming by being employed as a consultant Bill stood to make a £10m profit on his five-year association.

76. It was so preventable, I agree
The biggest mistake is one that could happen again. Hillary assumed that her winnng the nomination was a given.

The only thing worse is all the assumptions being made that a democratic win in the GE is a given as well. It isn't. It is something that has to be fought for and won by sheer determination and voter will. This primary is becoming a sideshow - and now that the jokes have become open inside of behind closed doors, it will only get worse. And that is time lost for the democratic party, time it will never get back again for a do-over.

I would like to see a democratic president. If I could wave a wand, I'd ask for Hillary to gracefully and immediately withdraw after the next two weeks of elections, throw her considerable forces behind Obama, and have the democrats pull together in a way they have not done during the past few elections and get their candidate in office. Hope HRC takes a big girl pill, and just does it - or hope that by some divine intervention by party heavyweights, the herd can be culled of this freaking impediment to GE success and the party can get on with the important work ahead. My take is that having a viable GE democratic candidate is the only thing that matters - and however much it hurts some, the math simply is against Hillary. If it was against Obama, I'd say the same thing. I watched that repub fool Huckabee tooting around like he was on some island cruise tour lark, refusing to ever disembark from the race. Pathetic - and if Hillary continues, I don't see much difference in her actions. Honor the system chosen by democrats to run their primaries, and get ready to do GE battle.

But we'll see. The longer Hillary disrupts the process because of blind personal ambition, the less likely is a win in the fall. She is destroying the democratic party chances, and history will hold her accountable for it.

How can she become a caricature of her former self?

It is not necessarily a pill needed. It is a reassessment of who she is to begin with. Reporters have been saying for years that blind personal ambition made Clinton a waffler, triangulator, and Bubba.

Hillary Clinton stood in the background and made me think she was a decent woman working for a TRULY flawed good guy.

This election has taken away the veneer and show me something wicked about these people. The way she campaigns says more about her strength of moral character than does her standing beside a philander. Her willingness to use race as a wedge IS THE ISSUE. Republicans are constantly willing to do that. Here she is shown that she is just as despicable as they are.

A viable GE democratic candidate?

Maybe I am naive but the board resets once the primary is over. Obama needs some sleep and needs a chance to gather together his GE team.

Gore and Clinton released a policy manual for the GE so that everyone knew what the Democratic party stood for. Democrats will only have a short amount of time to work out a strategy to overhaul a veto proof majority in the Senate and substantial sized victory in the House. The gubernatorial houses need to be turned over too.

In order to get out of the crap that the primary has generated, Obama needs the space required to be the HEAD of the Democratic party and lead ALL Democrats from the local to the national in ONE DIRECTION.

We have not begun to TALK ABOUT THAT YET.

It isn't so much about Hillary as to how will Obama manage the resources EFFECTIVELY enough so that he can get the ground swell he needs to get a SWEEP in November. There is a lot of legislation that needs to be overturned.

What about judicial and cabinet/sub-cabinet level appointments? If he is talking about us being the kind of change we are looking for, how is he going to harness that GROUNDSWELL to go in the direction he needs.

I see some hopes out there, but I don't see too many people talking about these mechanical, unsexy things.

but probably not so out of context. That would be an example of the "Hillary Experience doctrine", right? Goes something like your 1000 to my 80 something gives you more experience in posting, which of course is automatically "better" experience because of sheer volume of posts.

I'm an independent and haven't picked a candidate, since I like keeping my mind intact and functional during the primary and then general process (though I do make exceptions for extreme cases of bad candidacy - like Hillary Clinton while she was still part of the equation). Comics and satirists use living material and HRC gave them the facts with which to do their craft. Sounds like everything they are joking about could have been avoided by running a decent campaign based on issues that matter, really matter, not the kind of stuff that is making her the butt of jokes. She knew better, so live by sword, end by sword.

and one I've seen time and again with her campaign. But wouldn't you think after the first so many gaffes, mis-steps, and blow-ups, a smart person would say "damn, I am the one in charge of this, so I better step in and make some decisions for myself here"?

OTOH, probably not - people who let other handle them this much can't be all that secure with their own abilitie. I can tell you that it wouldn't take this many times for me to ditch handlers that were running me into the ground like this. Independent judgment about stuff like this is what she lacks.

She has got to watch her words on video, see newspaper reports, or SNL skits, and say "that isn't who I am - I'm gonna fix that up right now and save myself from losing this campaign." If she is so deliberately insulating herself with handlers that she no longer wants to get her message across, then good riddance to bad baggage, as I don't want to elect her "handlers" to run the country.

197. Hillary either isn't that smart or she's ruthless!
This scorched earth strategy is UGLY. I saw Howard Wolfson on some Sunday news commentary today. His eyes were soul-less, like those of a shark. He was twisting his hands like a stage villain.

Bill and Hillary are running their own show, however. It's sad to see Bill, a former President, attacking ordinary citizens in the crowd when they question his assertions on behalf of Hillary. It's not dignified for Bill to be shaking a pointing finger at a woman in his audience and, redfaced, to angrily berate a citizen! We DIDN'T get any change in our health care during Clinton's 8 years in office. Why expect them to do better with a 3rd term? There is so much they did wrong then.

Well, months ago on another forum I predicted Hillary would descend to divisive race-baiting as a last ditch tactic. I'm unhappy to be right about that. We don't need this. It's obvious Hillary's motive is "if I can't have this, then Obama damn well won't."

142. A person can't be good at EVERYTHING
I agree with some of the concerns expressed by the women journalists Howard Kurtz discussed in today's Reliable Sources show.
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/

The quote is not available.

Why should male anchors and male guests be allowed to vehemently diminish someone without fairly representing her point of view?

That is a legitimate problem in the media. But I'd also say, if you give someone ammunition they are going to use it against you.

But why should women journalist sit still and recognize some of the problematic racial overtones of this race and be silent? If you are a Democrat, how can you sit still and think it is ok for anchors and guests to overlook and caricature according to race?

There have been multiple tones throughout this primary and WILL BE in the GE about race too.

I thought Democrats as a whole fight injustice where they find it. Or so long as injustice works to our benefit?

It is incredibly disappointing.

feeding you ideas instead of the opposite, and Lewinski. Apparently Bill wanted this as much as Hillary so he could have a legacy greater than that sad event. This is the fall from grace folks, journalists are finally getting it that Bill worked for his own enrichement financially: Chiquita banana, a uranium deal, Indian money flying him around, Yucaipa and Ron Burkle, Tata, WTI and Jackson Stephens line of credit to them for $3.5 million, Magnaquench to China, the Rodham brothers and money for Presidential pardons for convicted felons, China connections amd more money. Bill could have settled down to retire with a possible noble prize for the aids work and work for the poor around the world. He and Hillary have had so much smoke blown up their arses for 16 years they haven't been connected to earth for many years.

the Chiquita story http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/43/029.html

Sometimes, I get uncomfortable for the gutsy person. I worry about how it will affect their careers.

For the person lampooned, I do put myself in their shoes. But I think the "white voter" thing was inexcusable. I didn't feel bad for her because she has done more in her campaign to make that SNL sketch realistic.

Shame on her.

This will be in the MSM all week, and I do expect to see some serious SD movement over the next week to Obama. This will be the watercooler chit-chat, and Supers are not going to want to be associated with it.

79. This is why Hillary has to drop out of the race fast, for her own future
The skit was brutal on Hillary I'll agree, and I was expecting it after the media treatment towards Hillary.

If Hillary stays in the race until June 3rd or whenever then the media and late night comedy are going to badly damage her political future by regularly making a joke out of what a 'sore loser' she's being by not giving up.

At this point she's hurting herself much more then she's hurting Obama by not dropping out, the damage she did to Obama was done in the all the weeks after super Tuesday when she threw negative attacks at him, and aired controversial ads that will allow the GOP to say "well Hillary did something like it to Obama, why can't we".

At this point the only way Obama can lose the nomination is either him suddenly dropping dead, or something 100 times worse then the reverend wright scandal coming up and destroying Obama and his poll numbers overnight.

One thing I noticed is that contrary to all the hand-wringing, SNL didn't call Hillary's supporters racists. They had Hillary threatening the Democratic Party that her supporters are too racist to vote for a Black man. Like it or not, that's exactly what Hillary's message has been lately.

101. I watch SNL pretty regularly and have seen a lot of the classic skits as well.
Lampooning politicians is standard fare for them -- from Dubya to President Clinton to Bush pere, etc. Who doesn't remember Chevy Chase spoofing President Ford?

But I have to say, that was one of the toughest send-ups of a politician I've ever seen them do. The end went something like this: "So there you have it: I'm a sore loser, my supporters are racists, and I have absolutely no ethical standards. The choice is obvious." It was a far cry from "Bitch is the new black." I was surprised by it.

has had unintended consequences, eh?

Everybody's got Hill and Bill's number now.

Its a sight to see the Clinton's legacy going down in flames right in front of our eyes.

The strangest part is its a self-inflicted wound. The vast right-wing conspiracy couldn't bring them down.

Their own ego's and sense of entitlement coupled with a lack of moral standards brought them down.

If I were the Clinton's, I'd stop their useless campaign now and save all the money they still have.

I don't see Hill or Bill getting obscene amounts of money for influence or speeches in the future.

wasn't funny... Just like the Morgan/Tina Fey exchange wasn't particularly funny. I don't like the way they've discussed race and this election. Their coverage generated weeks of negative attention on Barack. When they're not painting Obama to be a clueless fool, they're making Clinton out to be a heartless b*tch (don't get me wrong, I feel that way about Clinton all the time, but I'm starting to sense a different motive behind her actions--and if what I suspect is true, she doesn't deserve to be treated that way in SNL skits).

Anyway, to make a long story short--their writers are crude and mean.

148. And when they did that to Univision and Obama -- that was okay?
When they ran that spot about Obama getting favorable treatment, thereby trashing Univision's debate, which Hillary used again and again to intimate that the corporate media were all pro-Obama -- that was okay? I disliked both spots. The first one was dumb and insulting to Univision. The second one was dumb and insulting to Clinton. Both spots insulted the intelligence of viewers. Stupid premise. Amy Poehler's impressions were good but the scripts were very boring.

149. It's called attempting to make up for being slow to recognize what most people knew a long time ago
Being behind the curve isn't good practice, especially when your so-called expertise is political satire.

156. its funny because it is true
this was a brutal skewering of the highest order

and honestly, it was well deserved. i think this season has been quite good for snl, they have been quite frank about their political discourse and have been willing to say what the msm has been afraid to say.

they'd have a black guy, an egghead and a hippie eating sushi and sipping chardonnay. :)

164. Good, it's about time somebody did.
I watched the Amy Poehler skit on youtube and it seemed exceedingly mild. If she had actually satirized instead of reporting it could have been a lot funnier.

180. where were the jokes?
I'm an Obama voter and I didn't find that to be funny.

Mind you, I wanted it to be funny. I wanted something so funny that no one could take her seriously again. But that was so humorless that it could backfire.

Amy Poehler as hilary:

"I am a Sore Loser"

"I am a racist"

"I have no ethical standards"

"Happy to play the gender card"

Pretty much everything except the pandering.

198. You're exactly right. She brought this on herself.
I have been shocked and disturbed watching her go lower and lower. I can't believe she chose this strategy as her supposed method to beat Obama? How could she go there? How could she have thought this was a winning strategy and would be well received? She's lost her bearings and her objectivity, in my opinion.

She's had many opportunities to pause, reevaluate and choose not to take the lowest road. The lowest road seems to be her fall-back position.

I scratch my head in bewilderment.

205. Hillary was doing ok and then she went back to those cookie cutter pant-suits...
for a broad who has millions she lacks the inteligence to allow someone else to dress her, Hillary; "I gotta be me" which is exactly the point the people don't like what they see... and hear.
